sucks to be in the group of death
Napier U19 Tournament
shame no Wellington United there.
the other top wellington clubs are all there bar this one that has a long history of Youth coming though to top level.
No offence to the Napier tournament, but playing national league is a much better idea than a nothing tournament held over a weekend.
I would not say it's a nothing tournament, just that there is a league (and let's be honest NYL is rubbish) that is better
The top four teams from Wellington seem to be Wests, Karori, Petone and Lower Hutt.
They are all in different groups and have a good chance of progressing to the quarters.
Hopefully the weather doesn't get too nasty up there.

showing your greenness calling Napier a nothing tournament

depends what sort of Wests team is going given the Ole philosophy of not actually wanting to win football games. Wharf are in the group of death. Petone aren't that flash - so LH might be the favs to push through - especially when they can rest their whole team v UH :)

most of the Lower Hutt team (for example) do both.
There are no N.Y.L games this week

Don't think many of the 'good' kids from Ole are going as these tournaments only produce injury according to Edge, so Wests could be weak but they do have tawa in their group who aren't very good
It's not going to be the greatest start to the Tournament weather wise. Has been raining steadily since about 6am and no signs of it easing off for the next hour or so.
Not much fun lying in bed listening to the rain and thinking "oh $%^#@!"
Oratia 2.1 Bays
Petone 3.0 Mirramar
Birkenhead 5 .0 Island Bay.

Why is there a bye in Group G? Did someone pull out at the last minute?
Yes
Which team?
would have been an interesting convo. Think I can guess how it went. Lots of arm waving from DE

If it was anything like Edge and Calcott a couple of weeks back at NYL Tee Dubs game, it would have been very entertaining.

if this is true why go at all????

soft grounds could be a blessing as some years it has been hard grounds and lots of injuries…
Birko in to the semis for the 6th straight year. Pretty remarkable record, can't think of any other club that can go close to matching that in recent years. If they beat Waitak tomorrow it will be 5 finals in 6 years as well.

I wondered when you would chime in, regardless it is an amazingly consistent record.

Without being from that end of the country - is Birko a massive junior club with the sheer volume of players creating success at this level or do players gravitate there for other reasons?

I would say it's more about their programs than sheer volume. I don't know their exact numbers but certainly not one of the biggest clubs in Auckland

He didn't go up there to watch Wests - just to slag off anything or anyone that isnt Ole
Birko win 1-0 And Manurewa won 5-4 on pens
The two best teams from the group stages making it to the final was good to see. Springs and Birkenhead dominated the whole way through their groups and contested a very tight and close final. Birkenhead's record is amazing in the last 6 years. Not an easy tourney to go back to back in and playing in 5 of the last 6 finals is crazy
Birko have an unreal record from 2010-2015. 3 championships, 5 finals, 6 semis. One group stage loss in 30 matches (vs Hamilton in 2013). Unbeaten in 16 matches and counting now.
I know Birko have had some very strong squads in those years which always puts them among the favourites but to maintain that level year in year out when there is always a few decent sides from both Auckland and Welly any given year is pretty impressive.
Lots of credit has to go to Hobbo for that tbf.
Birko certainly not one of the biggest clubs around. Current membership is just over 1000 i think. And yes people do gravitate there - Hobbos track record at the tournaments is one of the main reasons.
Has any team ever done the three-peat?
Congrats Birko on the repeat, 3peat in 2016?
Has any team ever done the three-peat?
No, Miramar came closest winning in 1988 & 89 but lost to Mt Wellington in 1990
Yes
Which team?
Havelock North pulled out around a month ago. Confirmed that no replacement would be found last week.
Onehunga defaulted all their games too. However, competition operators didn't feel the need to tell the other teams in the group as they still played with ineligible players - just got no result.
NW/Satellite the door mat here
Tournament team is weird this year. Only one from each team and satellite players included. Any tournament team with Thompson Nkoy in it has something wrong with it.
It's always pretty weird but to put the satellite players in there is a bit of a joke......
Why? Just cause the team is at a lower tier, does not mean there is the opportunity for stand out players.
In the years that the Phoenix came last, were all their players shark?

BIG difference in quality between some of the satellite teams and teams in the main draw.
Make more sense to have a separate satellite 'Team of Tournament'.
Where is the list of players selected in tournament team?
