In fact, only 1 player from all four Semi-Finalists represented.
Kinda odd.
But then again, 13 of the players named didn't make it out of the group stage...

Isn't that choosen based on opposition coaching picking their top 3 players?

Nah they have a bunch of scouts watching games. Random collection of folks. Usually a couple of NZF coaches and former Napier City Rovers players etc.

Wonder how they missed Harry Bolton-Roberts for Birko when he controlled every game we played.
What's the point of tournament team? The better player in a poor team will always stand out.
Bit of fun I guess.

I'd be pissed if I knew the best player/players from my tournament winning team didn't make into tournament best team selection. Sounds a bit PC to me.

Happened to Petone when they won a few years back. Not one player selected for the tourney team.
Also I've heard Taban didn't score, missed a pen and didn't play well but still made the team. I get the feeling they pick their team then the scouts put a mark next to who got game time rather than actually watching.
When i was at the U19s the tournament team used to play the Junior AW's in the curtainraiser for the final. At least it counted for something back then
What two teams got relegated?

Upper Hutt and someone.
Re the tournament team it has taken various guises over the years and meant more sometimes than other times. I think good on them for still doing it, but getting hung up on it is a huge mistake.
annus horribilis for Upper Hutt (sack Hobbit)
That's a great effort from Cappy and the Wharf after losing a few players to Miramar. Well played.

Island Bay had about 2! And dominated the final as well. Spargo in goal for Karori pulled off a few great saves, especially late in extra time which was headed top corner.
Can't really remember Karori testing Island Bay keeper.

Those grapes a bit sour Energy ;)

I make it seven (Parker, Spargo, Dawson, Lee, Brodie, Duncan, Wood) but nonetheless a significant changeover. Plenty of youngsters too which bodes well for future.

That's correct!
Anybody got any footage on the main final?
up the Wharf!Karori and Island bay were easily the best sides in the sat draw and along with forrest hill were the only real footballing sides. The overall quality of the other sides was really really poor in comparison to other years. Island bay dominated the final would have to agree.
Only saw the odd bit of the main draw and the difference between that and the sat tournament is vast not unsuprisngly.
I have footage of the Ellerslie vs Lower Hutt quarter final penalty shootout, just have to figure out how to mute my babbling, also it's from a fair distance as they wouldn't let me on the field to film.
Anybody got any footage on the main final?
Just imagine a game of keep-ball from Wests. Though the Wests team was not strictly an Ole team it might turn up on the Ole YouTube channel.

Bit of Ole claiming going on there GG. Is that fair? At least a few of those lads (Bilderbeck, Waugh, O'Keefe, Faber, Gillespie off the top of my head) are more Wests than they are Ole. Kelliher's an Ole recruit and I'm sure there are a few others, but is it fair to attribute the success to Ole alone? Probably not.

A game of keep ball where Birko dominated the possession.
It was definitely a game of 2 halves. The first half of the final was Birkenhead's worst half of the tournament, not helped by a penalty decision when the tackle was outside of the box and the second Wests goal certainly looked markedly, not marginally, offside. Irrespective, Birkenhead played poorly and Western Suburbs took their chances.
The second half was a completely different story. Birkenhead dominated and deservedly scored, and with a bit better accuracy could have made the game safe. West's goal was a goal mouth scramble that someone toe poked home. Having said that, Birkenhead didn't deal with the free kick and paid the price. BUT, character to hit straight back and level again to force it into extra time.
In extra time, it was all Birkenhead, got the goal at the end of the first half of extra time, (after missing a couple of sitters), then retained possession in the second half of extra time to close the game out!!
Now admitedly I didn't see Wellington Olympic play, but how can a team who didn't make even the quarters contain the Player of the Tournament is beyond me. And no Birkenhead or Western Suburbs players in the tournament team - that is just a joke. For me Harrison Bolton-Roberts for his control of every game he played in or Elijah Neblett who was second equal golden boot, and scored his goals in the main draw, didn't win player of the tournament?? Very confusing.
Hats off to Napier City Rovers, another excellent, well run tournament - congratulations and a big thanks to Rovers!!
Elijah - 9 goals in main tournament is certainly no mean feat.
Working on getting a link to entire final...will know in a day or two.
Some Birko highlights here.
Hopefully that link works. No idea how to embed it on here because i think it's a private vid.

I would hate to have you laying in bed at night pondering the answers to your questions, so here goes:
The player of the tournament is awarded to the player who collects the most votes in the "man of the match" which is filled in by the managers after each game. As I do the stats for the tournament I know that the Olympic player "walked it".
The top goal scorer can come from either tournament.
As far as the tournament team is concerned - sorry, can't help you there. That is a part of the confusing and complicated world of coaches.

I believe, and you'd be able to correct me here if I'm wrong, that the tournament team is compiled from pool play. So it's not as if they sit back and wait to see who makes the quarters and then pick players just from there. Still seems unlikely not to have any players from the top two teams but I guess that's the nature of knockout footy.
The Wellington Olympic boy was pretty good.
The tournament quality was average really apart from Birko.W subs.Springs .

I haven't been for the last couple of years, but it's not a tournament format that lends itself to pretty football. Never has been.

Dead right - pool play it is
this thread was hard to find - anyway Napier U19's is upon us
focusing on the main draw - who are the favourites for each group? I know a bit about the Auckland sides so my pick for the best Auckland teams are:
Group A - Birkenhead, a little younger than normal between players 12 and 18 perhaps but will have a good 1 to 11.
Group B - Western Springs, have assembled an uber team - one to watch to be in the final - Bay Olympic have also put together a decent team I hear
Group C - Hard to pick this one, havn't seen much of Coast or Waitak other than Coast being hammered by Birko in a pre-season game (double figures) but players could have been missing etc etc. I do also hear Western Suburbs will be pretty handy so maybe no Auckland teams to progress from this group?
Group D - Hard again to judge this, have not heard to much hype from Glenfield other than a few warm up results, also Fencibles always seem to do ok in Napier so they might be a dark horse - might be another pool where non-Auckland teams dominate - big question mark on what kind of team Cashmere will turn up with as they are usually handy.
shame no Wellington United there.
the other top wellington clubs are all there bar this one that has a long history of Youth coming though to top level.
