Going by twitter and fourfourtwo forum, Australians have already conceded defeat. Its a shame the New Zealand government didn't get behind the bid like Aus gov have it just might have helped. I just knew NZF would stuff this up again.
WTF?

Football is coming home!!! Yeow!!!!

Not only is the NZ government putting money into this but apparently the Prime Minister called various heads of federations personally to try and get their votes. Royz is just being Royz here.
how many games are in Nz etc?
Think I saw 45% somewhere. so that would be about 28/29 games.
It's made the headlines of The New York Times.

Colombia's closing submission to UEFA which sealed the deal

Half the groups as well. Aussie gets 4, we get 4.
(Just logged back in after ages for this, we fudgein got a World Cup!!!)
This is what the bid said about what games COULD be hosted at each stadium.
Eden Park : Official Opening, Group, R16, QF, SF, 3v4
Wellington : Group, R16, QF, SF, 3v4
Christchurch : Group, R16, QF, 3v4
Hamilton : Group, R16, QF, 3v4
Dunedin : Group, R16, QF, 3v4
What's the deal with the Christchurch, I thought their new stadium wouldn't be ready before 2024? And it would be quite embarrassing to play games at that rickety temporary monstrosity they have right now.
I agree, seems sad that the Chch stadium will probably be complete in 2024, 1 year on from the world cup. I hope there is someway we can fast track it so it ready in time.

I read in the AUNZ bid that Sydney Olympic stadium would host the opening. A real shame if they host the opening and the final.

Interesting, I'd heard that the plan was for the opening game to be played at Eden Park. Defo would be a shame if Aus got both games.

The current stadium was in our bid. Capacity of 22,556 apparently.

Na. It has the inaugural match which is defined as the first game in Aus. The opening match is set for Eden Park. Though FIFA decide these things so who knows.
Yes you are right, says Inaugural match, which is slightly miss leading. Really hope Eden Park can host the opening. Think NZ would put on a better show ;)
I knew we would get it! Yesssss!

Your faith in the success of our joint bid was unwavering throughout!

Without being too negative if I was NZF I'd be cautious, about trying to host half the games (28/29) in NZ.
Thats alot comparing our 5M popn to Aussie's 25M odd. Most parts of Oz have better weather in July/August as well.
If Denmark v Cameroon is the 3rd game in Christchurch, and it's a foul night in July, will anyone turn up?
Is a potential empty stadium a great look being beamed around the football world?
Less is sometimes more.
And yeah I've been to that 'temporary' ground at Addington (on a foul night in July - Crusaders v British Lions), and it's very unpleasant.
I wonder if the OFC will still get 1 spot for this world cup, if so i am picking PnG to make it. Either way it should be great for the island nations.
I hope this win has really pushed hard for the Nixs W-League side happening.

OFC will have 1.5 spots for this World Cup, and that doesn't include us as hosts. So yes, there'll be at least one PI nation in the cup.

Seems undeserving. Women's game in OFC outside NZ is still woefully weak.
USA beat Thailand 13-0 at the WWC last year. They come up against PNG or whoever and it could easily be 20 goals plus.
FIFA better start spending up big on women's football in the Islands.

Heres the video presentation the AsOne team made. I'm not marketing or coms expert, but it is pretty slick.
Many thanks for posting that. It is very convincing, well balanced.
There is one down side to this good news. We will probably be put to sleep by Mia Jackman if she is part of the commentary team.

Edit: Seems slot allocation for the expanded tournament hasn't been done. Would imagine it won't be more than 1, especially as they have to adjust to accomodate two hosts).

undeserving at a WORLD cup? The World cup is the best from each region, so whoever wins the Oceania region is completely deserving to be there.
When El Salvador lost 10-1 to Hungary in the 1982 mens world cup or Saudi Arabia lost 8-0 to Germany in the 2002 Mens World Cup were they undeserving of being at the world cup?
Yipe undeserving for the moment. Whoever wins OFC qualifying will only do it by default in NZ's absence.
The AWs winning OFC qualifying doesn't grant automatic entry to a Men's 32 team World Cup.
There will be any number of Euro women's teams esp who will miss out on 2023 WWC, who could just as easy put 5-10 goals on PNG, Fiji or whoever.
The Ferns only have a world ranking of 23, and at the 2018 OFC WC qualifying in the heat of Noumea, they cakewalked New Caledonia in their semi 8-0, and Fiji in the final 8-0.
But yeah hopefully a 2023 downunder WWC is the driver, for a large investment in women's football in the Island Nations.
Also David Dome said that a Nix W League team (and academy) would look to recruit a few of the better Island Women's players, so that's a good thing and will help. But not sure it will make a huge difference in as little as 3 years.
A reasonable idea would be for FIFA/OFC to setup 10 scholarships to Ole, for most promising girls across OFC.
Only way theyre gonna get better is by playing more competitive games at this level. While they might get wallopped in these early years, they'll learn from it and be better off in future. Im sure Thailand have learnt a heck of a lot from 2019.
Yipe undeserving for the moment. Whoever wins OFC qualifying will only do it by default in NZ's absence.
on that argument you could say that NZ only qualify because Australai decamped to Asia

Maybe we should move a number of OFC women's teams into say the AFC, so American Samoa can qualify for WWC out of OFC. That would be a great feelgood story.
Your rationale that the only way the Islands Women's teams, are going to get better is by playing the big nations at a WWC, is seriously flawed. For sure playing better quality teams is part of the journey, to improving standards. But getting a serious of large hidings, and just learning various ways to park the bus - can also be detrimental long term.
Ben Sigmund I remember talked about being with the New Zealand U-17 team that was at the U-17 World Cup in 1997. He said it was a disaster, they lost all three games, conceding 22 goals, which included a 13-0 hiding from Spain.
The way he told the story, was that he learnt squat, the team mostly felt embarrassed/humiliated with some serious mental scars. I think a few of the boys even gave up football, when they returned home.
Much greater progress will be made by FIFA investment in quality programmes in the Islands (bleeding obvious), and getting a number of girls scholarships to Weenix Academy (esp if W League gets up and going), and/or Ole.
And yeah if a Nix W League team signed some senior Island players that would also be a massive boost.
To me a fair qualifying path for 2023 WWC would be a 0.5 spot to OFC, with a two legged playoff against a 0.5 spot team from women's AFC. Then if PNG, Fiji or whoever are good enough they'll make it.

that wasn't my rationale - Pierre stated that
The U17 team you mention is probably not the best example as there were serious issues with the coaching and while the players may not have learnt much I think its fair to say NZF did as can be seen by the performance and preparation for subsequent tournaments (PNG aside)
If you are going to have a World Cup every one of your full member confederations should have at least one direct qualifying spot
and just because Siggy says he didn't learn anything from it doesn't mean he didn't. He may not recall anything specific, but the fact he didn't quit and managed to forge a decent footballing career would suggest he learnt something about resilience and perseverance from the experience.
