What are our chances of actually being selected as hosts like?
It will be us (and Australia) or Japan.
Japan already have the Womens olympic tournament in 2021. Surely that works in our favour to get the 2023 WC.
Or not....
1968 Olympics Mexico, 1970 MWC Mexico,
1972 Olympics Germany, 1974 MWC Germany
.....
1996 Olympics USA, 1994 MWC USA & 1999 WWC USA,
..
2008 Olympics China, 2007 WWC China,
.
2016 Olympics Brazil,2014 MWC Brazil,
2020(21) Olympics Japan (scheduled), 2023 WWC (TBD - Japan anyone?),
2024 Olympics France (scheduled), 2019 WWC France,
2028 Olympics USA (scheduled), 2026 MWC USA/Mexico/Canada (scheduled)
Take out the ones that are Olympics + Men's World Cup (as the Olympics has never been a big deal for men in the World Cup era) and you're left with...
2019/2024, where the IOC put the Olympics five years after the World Cup.
2007/2008, where the IOC put the Olympics five years after the World Cup (it was originally scheduled to be in China in 2003, but shifted to 2007 automatically when SARS made that a no-go).
and 1996/1999, where the US was the only bidder for the World Cup.
Proven big event host with plenty of infrastructure (Japan) vs somewhere new and historic (Australia/NZ) seems to be the basic breakdown of the contest.
