I would very much like to hear who these 6 or so defenders are (unless "United quality" means the quality of United now, as opposed to the last 30 years).

Shaw, Jones, Rojo, Evans, Smalling and perhaps Blackett (can't really say yet) are all good enough. None of them are standouts as I said but none of them are liabilities. They are good enough to play Champions league football.

So what is "United quality" then? I would have thought that for defenders, "United quality" would have meant Pallister, Bruce, Vidic, Ferdinand, Irwin, Neville, etc - you really think that Jones, Evans or Smalling are anywhere near that quality?

No. Those days are over.

Cut and paste job today...

UNITED TO BEGIN 'SERIOUS' TALKS FOR VIDAL
Forget all the bulls**t that's been reported over the last three months, because now Manchester United are planning to start serious talks with Juventus over Arturo Vidal.

There'll be no more messing around, say the Daily Mirror, this time United mean business and Juve are ready to deal at 30 big ones.

'Louis van Gaal has hit the panic button at Manchester United and launched a desperate double bid for Arturo Vidal and Daley Blind,' report the Mirror.

'United have now made him their top target and finally opened serious talks - encouraged by Vidal's admission that he would be interested in moving to Old Trafford.'

There are whispers on Twitter that Vidal could be done by the weekend, so watch this space.

SONG TO LIVERPOOL
Liverpool are the latest club to linked with Alex Song after the former Arsenal midfielder was deemed surplus to requirements at Barcelona.

According to the Metro (via El Mundo Deportivo), the Reds are hoping to secure a loan deal for the midfielder.

'Arsenal and Marseille have also made approaches for the out of favour player, but Liverpool are keen to add to their midfield options, and Song is the priority,' report the Metro.

'Barca are thought to be desperate for a permanent deal for about £10million, but Liverpool are keen on a loan first, with a view to a permanent switch next summer.'

UNITED IN FOR CARVALHO
Oh, look! Another Billy Carvalho story. It's not as though we haven't read enough of those this summer.

The latest on the Sporting Lisbon midfielder is that Manchester United have joined Arsenal in the race to capture his signature before Monday's transfer deadline.

According to The Telegraph, United will offer £24m for the 22-year-old, who also featured on David Moyes' shortlist during his brief reign at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile: 'After witnessing his team's Capital One Cup humiliation against MK Dons on Tuesday, Van Gaal has also instructed Woodward to find buyers for the likes of Javier Hernández, Anderson and Shinji Kagawa before close of business at 11pm Monday.'

It looks set to be a busy few days.

AND THE REST
Fernando Torres is prepared to end his Chelsea nightmare by joining AC Milan...Hull are closing in on a club-record £10million move for Palermo and Uruguay striker Abel Hernandez...Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino ran a personal check on Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck at MK Dons on Tuesday night...Xabi Alonso is on the verge of joining Bayern Munich from Real Madrid for around £5million...Louis van Gaal's defensive concerns could deepen after it emerged that the Premier League are yet to sign off on Marcos Rojo's transfer, partly because of Sporting Lisbon's involvement with funding group Doyen...Neil Warnock made an unexpected return as Crystal Palace boss on Wednesday and is poised to bring Wilfried Zaha with him...

Leicester City have had a £7million bid accepted for Wigan midfielder James McArthur and have offered £5m for Lokomotiv Moscow striker Dame N'Doye...Celtic were last night trying to force through a £2.2million deal for Stefan Scepovic...Torino left out Alessio Cerci for tonight's Europa League squad, adding to speculation that he could be on his way out this summer. The Premier League looks a likely destination for the 27-year-old, who has a price-tag of £15m, with Arsenal, Everton and Manchester United all credited with an interest...Sunderland have offered £6 million for Virgil van Dijk after Toby Alderweireld rejected a move to the Wearside club.

I would like to see changes on a global scale. A June 1st to July 31st transfer window only, no loans. Then from January 1st to January 31st a Loan window only, no transfers.

An interesting debate.

I like most of what LG has proposed.

I feel that when the season starts, each team should have their roster finalised so everyone knows what they're up against. It is madness having the first three games inside the window.

I am in favour of abolishing the Jan window altogether. The only reason to keep it is in case of serious injury issues but then I think teams should be made to promote from within in that case - which would be a good test for their reserve and academy strength. Perhaps a loan-only window would be a sort of a half-way house, but even then I'm not such a fan.

I like the idea that you go into the season with a set of players and that's it.

The current system can be unfair where if you play a team in the first 3 games, they might be weaker as they haven't finished their transfer business yet. We might beat them with ease, then they strengthen and are tougher to beat for everyone else for the rest of the season. Not really fair on all the other teams. I think Arsene raised this type of issue with the Mata transfer last season. Chelsea had already played ManU twice with Mata on their side, then they sold him to ManU which made them stronger for when they played Chelsea's title rivals down the track.

I agree with the removal of the January transfer window. All it is, is a chance for players whom have helped get their club in the shit, to jump ship. Alghough having said that despite everything going on a QPR we are still stuck with SWP. That guy could survive a plague. 4 windows later and he is still there sucking the club dry.

Did anyone else seem to think there were more loans this window? That was my impression. Particularly more high profile players being loaned out in lieu of a permanent transfer (rather than the standard young/fringe players getting loaned out for the sake of game time). Could be an interesting result of FFP.

the transfer window is brilliant as it is - last minute panic buys, dildos being waved in Sky Sports News reporters ears, terrible language that upsets the lovely Natalie Sawyer (giving her a very sexy, stern face).

If anyone tries to change it, I will cut them.

Not sure if anyone can confirm this, but heard a stat this morning that LvG has already spent half of what Sir Alex spent in his whole time at Man Yoo.

Sir A left them with a pretty poor team and how he won the Premiership with that team is beyond me, but even then, that's insane!

Footballing transfer fees have well outpaced inflation. LvG has spent alot but he had to spend a lot. The great thing about having one manager is that if he likes a player, he is going to want to keep that player around. Ferguson did famously get rid of a number of players but he did keep the core of the team together. Someone like Mata went from Chelsea's best player to not even useful under a different coaching style.

He has also spent 60mill more than Wenger has in the past 15yrs.

It’s needed, and United are an easy mark as everyone knows they need the players and will pay. I bet if Chelsea or Arsenal had gone for De Maria it would have been 10mill less.

Total deal is 223mill when his wages, signing on fee and future fees are taken into account.

I dont think that is correct. Arsenal spent ~82m pounds this window, last season ~42.5m pounds, the season before that ~52m pounds, the season before that another 50m pounds. It might be a net figure you are quoting, I think in Arsene's time at Arsenal they have a net spend of about 120m pounds. Which is about 7m pounds more than Utd's net spend this most recent transfer window.

With ADM is that in NZD or pounds? If NZD then that is plausible as the transfer would be more than half of that, if pounds then Utd are paying over 600k pounds/week on top of the transfer fee.

So Dani Alves has said that he is leaving Barca at the end of the season to join an English club...who is it?

Looking at current squads and their needs, put Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool on the list but guessing it's more likely to be City or Chelski

No dildo-waving, no 'arry Redknapp giving an interview out of a car window, no moronic West Brom players turning up at QPR to try to force a move. None of the other magical occurences that normally happen on deadline day.

A good transfer window for Spurs and Toon.

Danny didn't sell Kane and Toon keep Sissoko.

AFC Bournemouth -

I'd like to see an additional centre-back, our pairing have been together since League One and although have both got us here, think they could struggle in the Premier.

We'll also add a striker and hopefully we finally sign the young winger Demarai Gray from Birmingham.

Goalkeeper position is whether we sign Artur Boruc permanently from Southampton having had him on loan this year.

We're being linked quite strongly with Cech. Would be surprising if we signed him in my opinion. Ospina has looked decent and I still think Szczesny is a world class keeper despite his brain implosion in (and after) the Soton game.

Aside from that the real question is whether or not we'll sign a DMF or settle with the Coq.

Outside of those two points, I can't see us buying any others unless we sell or someone leaves. Walcott, Cazorla and Wilshere seem to have question marks over them - Walcott's contract is running down, Cazorla has been linked heavily with a return to Spain, and it seems Man City have been sniffing around Wilshere.

Personally, if it were me, I'd probably look to offload Arteta and Flamini and bring in a new DMF to compete with Coq, and keep everyone else, and that's it.

I like Milner and wouldn't mind him as a cheap utility player. Could take the place of Rosicky/Flamini and fill in a number of positions. I couldn't see regular games for him though and I imagine he would be a bit pricey for that sort of role.

Cech would be my dream signing. Still one of the top keepers in the world and should still be playing at a big club. But Mourinho wouldn't sell to Wenger and United are likely going to be in the market for a keeper this summer so I wouldn't get any hopes up on that front.

Milner would be on a free so would be wages demands only to navigate. United may need a keeper but with a decent backup in Valdez, I can't see them going for an older keeper like Cech.

Be happy to take Milner on but like AJC, I don't think the wages he'll want are worth it for the role he'd play in our team. We just don't have holes to fill with the likes of Milner in our starting side.

To be honest he'd probably be a perfect signing for Liverpool right now... you know he'll do a job from day one, he's not injury prone, and he'll slot in anywhere you want him.
