When you watch our Women's teams, you know they always work hard and they often come really close, but they are just so unlucky..
yep definately outclassed but the bigger picture does look good. We are significantly better across the age groups in the womens game than we were 5 years ago. I was fortunate enough to have coached at some point in their carreers at either club or rep level 4 of the girls out there today and Im currently involved coaching a Weir Rose Bowl (10-11 year olds) girls team and the girls in the current Weir Rose bowl side are technically more gifted than this under 17 side were at Weir Rose bowl level.

Good save! McPherson was playing well, imo.
Dudley-Smith can score goals.
Looks like we have switched to 4-3-3 but unfortunately our wide backs arent getting forward and Spain are having a free run in the wide spaces in the middle 1/3rd.
San Pedro off, she was fantastic for me. It really frustrating to watch.. Come on New Zealand!
3-1, deserved scoreline Im afraid
Gah! Game over

Been outclassed today though.
Well the way forward for us is all there for everyone to see. More technical development, more skillful players who love to have the ball at their feet.
thats a close call, should have been 4-1 down
Yeah. We need more technical ability!!

Mmmm, not old/knowledgable enough to really know anything about how women's football was in NZ 5 years ago, but that sounds promising. Thats really good to hear. Of course you cannot just teach someone technique, it is developd so its good to hear that its improving. Hopefully this trend can continue and we can be playing like Spain in no time
I always really like to watch these teams because they have such a big heart and represent NZ really well, although they are often so unlucky! I have a friend who plays for the U-20s now and when the U-17s were in Auckland we watched her play in the games there. Despite losing 1-0 and 2-1, you could see that the team was really good. The Venezuela game was so unlucky for our team this year, for example. Just gotta get that little bit better in midfield and hold the ball a bit more. But that will come in time, I hope.
I wont have the facts exactly right here but 5 years ago NZ (on the womens senior side) had gone 16 games without a point outside of the Oceania Federation and 19 games without scoring a goal outside of Oceania. Jeremy Ruane will have the facts properly but I think we came 2nd in the Cyrpus Cup this year beating 2 top 10 nations along the way?. In the last couple of years we have scored a few goal against top 20 countries and also won a few games too.
I think we can go alright against Japan, but in the end shipping two soft goals against an inferior Venezuelan side will likely cost us.
I guess if Japan narrowly defeats Venezuela, and Spain destroys them like they should, a win over Japan would still see us qualify on goal difference, but our fate isn't in our own hands.
The Spanish free kick was a very well taken goal.

Needs more Hannah Carlsen.
sadly not a narrow defeat so far...but anything can change in the 2nd half. I'm hoping for a draw in this game.
09 September
Half-time
- Mai KYOKAWA (10', 32' PEN)
- Yoko TANAKA (27')
A draw would mean NZ have no chance of progressing!!!!!
Japan win now means NZ have to defeat Japan by probably 3 goals and hope Spain dont lose or draw with Venezuela.
Long shot but the only way to progress.
NZ played well against Venezuela but clearly spain are a classy side to have beaten Japan 4-1 and then not allow NZ a sniff this morning.

we're pretty much out of it now. Japan won 6-0! We need a bloody miracle.

If we beat the Japs 3-0 we'll be right.
also need Spain to Beat Venezuela too. I hope we can win against Japan.
Spain looked tidy, think they'll beat Venezuela, who we dominated i might add.
have to beat japan 4-0 lol.
NZ U17 played with courage, pride and with awesome skills. It was just so unlucky that nz didn't grab few more goals against Venezuela. Even against Spain, NZ U17 looked threatening with a most impressive defensive play, just like the All Whites! NZ U17 will have the size, height and physical presence coupeld with All Whites defensive fortressto grab a surprise against the Japanese side and win at least 4-0. That is a good reason why NZ should remain in the Oceania.
Final group game against Japan, tomorrow 7:45am on Sky sport 3 (was SS1 but has been moved)
Good luck girls!
Good luck girls!
Mostly disappointing effort in the first half. I think possibly the first game against Venezuela was against a technically weaker team. Near the end of the first half was a clear example of why our coaching of kids and youth needs to focus as much as possible on technical issues. We had a corner, played a short one and the ball back to the corner taker was in the air making an angled cross impossible. Japans short corners worked because the balls back to the corner taker were on the deck and much easier to cross in to the box. A very clear but simple example of the differences when playing up at the very highest level.
oh dear, now down 3-0. 2 quick goals from Japan.
disappointing end to the tournament for the girls. lost 6-0. was only 1-0 at half time. Oh well, next time.
Oops! It hurts. Welcome home.
Spain beat Brazil and Japan beat Ireland. Both teams from NZ's group through to the semis - a small consolation I guess? Also Sth Korea who NZ lost 1-0 to in a warm up game in the semi against Spain.
So we were in the hardest group?
Crazy. Germany, who scored 22 goals in group play, went and lost to Democratic Korea.
Three outta four semi-finalists from Asia (both Koreas, and Japan).
I noticed that too about Germany. That is too bad. I kind of hope both koreas have to face off in the final. i'm sure there will be blood.
