That's a good example though. It's not really about whether the club is big or small, it's about whether it is in good heart. If it's fked, either save it (Molerats) or don't (Marist) and if you're not going to then fold the thing up and save everyone the headache of dealing with your poorly run, under-resourced shambles.

On the flip side, these things come and go I guess, so maybe I/we shouldn't rush to judge.

The last thing we want is just a handful of clubs in the region, the more clubs the better. Obviously those clubs do have to be well run and resourced and from that perspective I understand what you're saying. It sort of came up with the naked molerats, they're stretched for resources and volunteers as well as only having one senior (plus a masters) team. But at the same time they decided to stick with it for now, because it'd be a big shame for the eastbourne community to not have a football club - and whatever history comes with that.

Also once a club is folded it's near impossible to start one back up. I understand that some clubs are a shambles, but once you lose a club it's effectively gone forever.

To start a club for a region lacking one, you'd have to have your first team starting in cap14. No matter how well resourced or funded you are, thats a tough sell.

I guess I'm commenting from a theoretical dreamland. It is sad to see clubs merge or fold as it means one less club in the region. But reality is those mergers or closures are obviously necessary if it comes to that.

more well resourced clubs = good

less well resourced clubs = bad.

P.S sorry for taking this offtopic, feel free to paste this into a new thread if anyone can be bothered and think its worth carrying on with

Is 8 senior teams hardly any?

Also, All clubs have plenty of volunteers.

Some organisations have a bunch of teams playing under the same name but they aren't a club even though they like to call themselves a club.

Probably not the correct choice of word in 'hardly' but for a CL club their senior numbers are pretty low and have been for a long time.

There are volunteers, volunteers whom are told to volunteer and volunteers whom do it cause no one else will and the club will fall apart if no one does. There are distinct difference in that I suspect that there is not many in the first category and quite a few in the last two.

I can attest that no one knows as well Mumbino about how hard it is to get people to do shit. Some clubs do well - usually those with families heavily involved over a long time but others really struggle because new members barely ever want to do much more than play and grab a freebee or two.

Yep I should have said he knows as well as anyone. But yeah, some clubs rely on someone like him when they really shouldn't. Same point

Apologies.  The two capital letters in the same sentence threw me.  Much like your closures with a comma.

Alrighty back to the fitba!

Picks for Weekend

KCU - Naenae. Head says KCU by 2, but Heart says Naenae to do BNU a massive favour and force a draw

BNU - NW. Supposedly a few of the NW boys are REALLY pissed they aren't going to be promoted, so want to 'prove a point' and beat us tomorrow, to show they deserve to be up. We are also up for the game as NW are the only team we haven't beaten all season. BNU 2-0

IBU - Vic. Lol. IBU by 6

Now for the BIG games

Karori - Marist. If Marist win they jump above Karori into 5th or 6th depending on other results, but a loss or draw really makes it squeeky bum time with Miramar able to jump above them with a draw if Marist lose. Picking Marist 3-2

WU - Miramar. Well who knows, will there be dropped players. Nothing but a win is really good enough for Miramar. Frankly from the times we played them Mar were the better team. Mar 2-1

SO if all those results come through Welly Utd will be in the final and dreaded 'maybe' relegation spot of 8th.

Should be a good last day

so I take it the original planned 9 team cap2 meant there wasn't going to be a cascade effect of three team relo from every grade? Would have been a better option given teams finishing third bottom are thinking they are safe but they aint

but then it would of been 3 down last year in all grades instead of the 2.

this year everyone knew it was going to be 3 down so no surprises or appeals should be entertained this year i hope.

Unfortunately social players don't read YF. Team I just played for came third bottom and think they're safe and I haven't got the heart to tell them..

Got some results for Karori in Cap Prem and Cap 1 today, please, Mike? They're the only ones missing on Capital Football's website.

Wharf 0 - Marist 2. For those saying Kilbirne park is woeful, it was a carpet compared to KP #2 today. Even contest with no team ever making a threat. Own goal off a wayward shot saw Marist up 1-0. Penalty for 2 -0. Well done to Marist for avoiding 8th, and look forward to Brian Blellocks rants from the sideline next season.

I've really enjoyed this thread and politics over the year. When in Wgton for the EPL someone tried to explain how it all works with promotion/relegation and I am still all confused.  Can someone clearly explain how it all works with Central League, how many teams from each area etc and the ramifications down the grades?  It seems really complicated from an outsider's point of view.  Ta.

Stop Out win Cap Prem. They play off home and away against Wanganui to see who replaces Upper Hutt in Central League.

If Stop Out go up, they are replaced by Upper Hutt and the normal two teams go down from Cap Prem.

But if Wanganui go up, Stop Out stay in Cap Prem (again) and Upper Hutt come down, meaning an extra team has to drop out of Cap Prem.

That has a cascade effect down the leagues.

The cascade effect is amplified by Cap 1, which has 11 teams so has to shed an extra one.

Clear as mud?

Without reading the whole thread or the Cap Prem one, why does an extra team have to go down if Wanganui go up? Apologies, I'm sure it's been explained many times.

I asked the question after reading that post.

"If Stop Out go up, they are replaced by Upper Hutt and the normal two teams go down from Cap Prem.

But if Wanganui go up, Stop Out stay in Cap Prem (again) and Upper Hutt come down, meaning an extra team has to drop out of Cap Prem"

Which part explains the reason for the extra team dropping only if Wanganui go up? Presumably Upper Hutt come down regardless of who goes up, and Wanganui stay if Stop Out go up, as do Stop Out if Wanganui go up, so I don't fully understand the relegation. I get the issue with Cap 1 being 11 teams this year, but I don't quite understand the difference between Stop Out or Wanganui going up which is what I asked. I do play in a lowly social division though so may not be up to speed with the rules at this high level.

Edit: Looking at the league tables I now see Wanganui were not in Cap Prem so assume this is a playoff with the winners from another region. Should have checked that first, I had assumed it was a playoff between 2 teams from the same division to decide who went up. So presumably it's to make sure Cap Prem remains 10 teams and not 11.

You have solved it. Sorry, I assumed everyone knew that Wanganui was a Central Region team. But why would everyone know that. Apologies.

As Jeff said above, this is a peculiarity of the lower North Island because the Central League covers two Federations.

To make it (slightly) more complicated, if you get three teams down from Cap Prem to Cap One, then you will have FOUR teams going down from Cap One because of the need to reduce Cap One to 10 teams next season. This is the North Wellington Relegation Rule.

That's not a blanket 4 teams down though, because in some of the leagues below there may not be two teams to go up. You'd have to check each league.

The rule as regards promo/relo is that the top two teams in a league go up. If one of them can't go up, the third placed team gets a playoff against the highest ranked team to be relegated.

Messy, but mostly logical.

Oh and promotions always happen before relegations. So if you're eligible to go up then you go up, and then however many teams need to go down to accommodate go down.
