WC Intercontinental Playoff vs Costa Rica | Tue 14th June (15th NZT) | 9pm (6am NZT)
But for sake of anorak debate, who would be number 4 if another one was added? I'll nominate Ivan Vicelich: debuted as a teenager, record number of full caps, good pro career in Europe, played numerous positions for national side, and always turned up like it really, really mattered to him.
That's pathetic. Biggest football (the world game) match involving a NZ team in 4.5 (Peru), maybe 13 years (Bahrain).
How many rugby stories of both genders did TV1 run over those 2 days.
Ah yeah, but the media whores (the blues) have bought themselves to success, can’t let that get in the way of actual news.

CR play on the counter so you need a keeper that can sweep as well. Marinovic is diabolical with that and gave a way a couple of goals in his last season charging out and getting no where near the ball.

What about a story on the Costa Ricans, been one of those?
Rolling out one of 2009 team who played Bahrain?
The FIFA money at stake and where that could be spent?
A story on our TT cousins (who we play in September) playing Peru?
Injury update on Reid?
I'm no journo, and maybe some of these have already been covered. But again is the biggest NZ football game in years, and likely the last of these big playoff games we will ever have. Good luck getting much coverage of AWs verus PNG, to win OFC qualifying in the future.
Narelle did a social distanced interview with Garbett.
We made it. @1NewsNZ in Qatar for @NZ_Football’s huge clash with Costa Rica… for a place at the FIFA World Cup. Updates here and on Insta over the next few days before the big match! pic.twitter.com/j2s8QSVHBp

@1NewsNZ at 6pm: the All Whites trio hoping to pull off an Italian job in Qatar, plus injury updates on the team’s biggest stars.

That’s also on NZ Football. Gotta release stories if they want them reported.
First look at Costa Rica team last night, to find out what I could.

Large media presence, with more to arrive & heavy security, guys u don’t muck around with. Lots of staff too, way more than NZ.
Overall - definite air of respectful confidence from CR.

Had to chat to Ben Waine who turned 21 in camp! Sounds like he hasn’t quite escaped the tradition that comes with it though… 😬🎁🎉@NewshubSport @NZ_Football @_waineo pic.twitter.com/u4Lphy1fIU

Bit of a desert storm in Doha yesterday…

Still 44 degrees, but extreme wind during the day, so cooled everything down.
Could manage the 1.5 km walk to All Whites team hotel, instead of getting a taxi, which had seemed a bit lazy.
Maybe getting acclimatised! pic.twitter.com/NnZmcPPAQa

Yeah noticed that as well. Lads! He's been in the UK virtually half his life now so not surprising. Most of it from the Midlands north. Now if he acquired a Geordie accent that would be quite something.

The team has large Sumner, Rufer and Nelsen banners they take with them. Mentioned in an article above.

That's:
That's about best-case scenario if I'm an AW supporter. Ruiz and Venegas are two of the least defensive minded options possible, Borges and Tejada lack of pace/work rate in the middle will only be compounded by Ruiz. Fuller is the weakest defensive option of the right backs. This is the formation most likely to leave Campbell isolated.
If this the lineup and the AW are able to be sharp on the ball, I think they can hold a numerical advantage in the centre of the pitch and control the ball and possession. If the Ticos have more of the ball, then this lineup isn't as risky because Ruiz and Venegas won't have to track back, Fuller has to defend less (and I like him going forward) Campbell will be dangerous... so if this is the Ticos starting lineup, the AWs have to make them work off the ball and defend.
8 of that starting 11 are over 30. In a one-off playoff perhaps age doesn't matter, but I feel like there are some risks being taken there.

Reverting to a back 3/5, after 4 at the back against both Panana & Martinque. 8 of those guys above started against Martinque, and 2 others were unavailable (Ruiz with Covid & Navas in Europe). Waston (played against Panama) would be the only newcomer who was available for the Martinque game. Hugely experienced lineup.
Sounds encouraging if true, and our young midfield especially can press them hard, shutting down their space.
Or it could all be an elaborate Costa Rican bluff aka 'Operation Mincemeat'!!

Hopefully the forerunners of massive coverage in November!
Kiwi fans get a load of this!

Costa Rica apparently reckon it’s a done deal hmmmm.
The Aussies here will be cheering the All Whites on come Wednesday that’s for sure! ⚽️👊🏼🧐 @NewshubSport pic.twitter.com/fg1A7y63MP
Very interesting. Probably says as much about Navas's ego as anything. All those years in the Real & PSG dressing rooms around all those superstar team mates.
I note on FB so many super confident CR fans quoting Mexico 2013, that being the one time the AWs played a CONCACAF team in the playoffs. They seem fixated on that drubbing even though was 9 years ago, and almost no relevance to now. Maybe that's rubbed off on their players
Marko Stamenic’s family have made the trek over from NZ for Wednesday’s knock out clash against CR.

There’s been a lot of controversy around this @FIFAWorldCup but so far so good according to fans, families, & players on the ground.

Will be similar in San Jose manana.
Sounds like the 10,000 odd Peruvian fans in Qatar are also going to the 2nd game tomorrow, adding to the Ticos support.
Vamos Socceroos!
Also didn’t realise how much CR are favourites. Bookies aren’t paying much for them to win.

Tbf they have a world class goalkeeper and we don’t, nor do we even know who our starting keeper will be.
Could be pivotal in what I think will be a very cagey and tight game.
