The Tasman United U-19s commence a new era of NYL football as they play Dragons at Saxton Field, 1pm tomorrow. Here's the squad. Get along if you're in Nelson, should be a good watch after Tasman beat the Dragons 4-3(?) a few weeks(?) ago.

Well, I wasn't wrong! 6-5 Canterbury it finished, but Tasman should have won it in the second half. Two stunning lobs, a keeping howler, some great passing and dribbling, zero defending, this match had it all! Result aside, I'm pumped to get along to a few more of these.

Phillip Rollo - Holy shark! What an article. I can already tell the coverage of football by him this season is going to be immense, and Nelson people will read it and believe in the hype. Hopefully both the youth league and national league sides can draw some nice crowds!

Tasman squad was released for the game earlier, here it is. Mark Johnston and Coey Turipa out injured, Nicolas Abot not cleared. Interesting to see Marcel Kampmann drafted in to replace Coey, considering Nick Stanton played for the U-19s (although he did play poorly).

My prediction: 3-1 Canterbury.

I think Marcel may have been injured for that youth league game. I believe he's played for Lower Hutt, so seems a good youth pick up.

Decent first up result against Canterbury. Should be able to improve on that once the premier left back returns from injury next week.

How did dylan burns and cam Lindsay go? Good to hear ifill tower back in the score sheet. I guess Tasman also have a new striker they can add to the mix. Well done Tasman. Is anyone else looking forward to playing AC?

Burns has been one of the team's best signings and stood out against Canterbury.

Still in the running for NZ under-20 I believe too.

Turipa back, Ifill out as United head to Auckland to face Giants Auckland City

Phillip Rollo has killed it again, that's the sort of coverage I expect to see from a top tier side. Knocking it out of the park son!

Tasman Youths went down 2-1 to ACFC Youths today. I think Matt Tod-Smith (possibly Thang Thang Vanuk, there's some confusion) scored for Tasman. Here's the match report.

So, I'm gonna make a prediction for the Bay game, and I'm calling 2-1 Tasman. Goals to Hajdari and Ridsdale, + an Allan oggy.

Any other picks?

Great result with Tasman picking up their first SS Premiership win when defeating Hamilton Wanderers 3 - 2,with Alex Ridsdale scoring a late winner. Well done - congratulations

Fudgeing finally. Get in lads! Good to see Hajdari finally get the goal he's deserved for his performances, Marowa seems able to threaten at SSP level after starring in NYL, and Ridsdale can't stop scoring!

Maybe this will be the trigger for us to start getting the points our performances deserve.

So after looking at the highlights, it seems that we scored a great goal (that's Marowa's; great stuff to get to that one and a very cool finish), a good goal (Ridsdale's; he did well to find space at the back post, that's a fantastic cross from Nico Abot and a good header to finish) and a somewhat jammy goal (Hajdari's; but it should still be a great confidence boost after Hill denied him a not-too-dissimilar one vs. Bay last weekend).

Some better finishing would do us wonders, as both Skippy and Hajdari should've scored elsewhere. With any luck, this'll be a lift to the team and we might see some better scoring now we've won at last, especially with our main scorer breaking his duck.

Also, Sam Wilson has gone. Bit of a loss, he's looked good in his three appearances.

I have had the pleasure of being in Nelson for the last 10 days and have seen Nelson's last two games. I have not seen much SSport football but I was pleasantly impressed. Nelson played Canterbury and Auckland. Two close games with the result in both games settled by injury time goals. The standard of football was pleasing to see. The sides were all trying to play football and there was some good young talent on display. Young Dylan Burns was impressive agaisnt Canterbury and Nelson also have a gem of a young winger who scored against Canterbury.

I hope the Tasman franchise survives. They have a great set up. The small stand works well and has an excellent hospitality area. More importantly the club has a good local following. There were 1200 at the Canterbury game and it appears the town is behind the team. Apparently they had over 3000 for an earlier season game. If they can get their recruiting sorted and strengthen their defense in particular they should have a bright future..

It was also so good to see that great warrior Paul Ifill on the field. He may be getting on but he is still has a touch of class in some of the things he does

Another well written article from Philip Rollo.

I'm going to weigh in here though, and say that while I have a lot of time for George Campbell, he and Slotsy (who I have no respect for, he's an utter wanker) are both completely wrong here. Maybe I'm biased towards Biggsy (who is the best coach I've ever had), but he's hit the nail on the head - the quality of player doesn't exist in Nelson right now. At the moment, talented footballers don't stay in Nelson, they head overseas or to other teams as quickly as possible (See: Kip Colvey, Erik Panzer, Alex Ridsdale, Sam Mason-Smith, Ben Harris). That's why the majority of local players in the squad are very young (Callan Elliot, Daniel Allan, Bertie Fish, Matt Tod-Smith, even fringe players like Chester Gaskin etc.)

As Tasman settles in to the league, young players will continue to be developed but right now its just not feasible to have more locals in the side. I don't think Tasman are the worst side in the league by any means and they've had a lot of bad luck this season but they more than have the quality to turn this season around. Ifill is looking pretty past it though.

Sam Mason-Smith and Ben Harris aren't exactly Nelson players. They are imports, just like Dylan Burns, Paul Ifill, Ermal Hajdari etc..

So, just to clarify, you're not sure where you stand on Slotsy?

I think this season has proved one thing: Nelson has a better catchment and organisational base than Otago/Southland and there's a chance they can be sustainable as long as there is always enough money being tipped in by the community to afford a handful of Ifills/Mason-Smiths/whoever.

Or is that two things? Not sure. Anyway, they've done better than  expected them too. Kudos to all involved.

I think Tasman and Southern are in very similar situations whereby football talent will always leave for the bigger centres - which means they have had to get by with young, local talent to supplement experienced imports.

Tasman have done well to get Ifill etc as have Southern with the Irishmen.

However, it all comes back to success on the field. The only way to continuously get experienced imports to the teams is when there is a chance for success. Southern have finally improve on their organisational side of things, which is being reflected with on field performances, as you'd expect.

Thankfully both teams are performing above expectation and if that continues then that may reduce the number of top local players that leave for the 'better' teams.

It is very interesting that the point of "the team needs more local players" has come up for all the South Island teams. I am not aware of it happening elsewhere, but is an important topic in the current NZ football world - if not the most important.

Edit: I'm a noob

Sure but my point was that the Nelson region doesn't hang on to talented young players when they come through, regardless of where they are produced.
