Thinking about it and honestly, Manyumow Achol might be the perfect replacement for Lewis. Not sure how long he’s contracted for at FK Auda but he’s played 29 games as a starter since moving there.
Good on him for getting his professional career underway but quietly annoyed that Steven Taylor snagged him from the academy and got a transfer fee for his Gulf United thing.
The issue with recruitment is that until we know for certain if Uffie is staying or not, and who replaces him if he does leave, the club won't be in a position to sign new players. And even re-singing becomes difficult as players want to know who they are working with. And you run the risk of extending contracts for players who are not going to start with the new gaffer. Though it's fair to say I struggle to see what coach would have demoted either Sail or Lewis. And probably Urg.
Achol was with the Nix prior to heading over there, played for the reserves for a season I think - another case of a trial that didn't stick I think and his route back would be a change in coaching staff (not unlikely to be fair)
Re-signing Rufer & Elliot appears to be the main target at the moment. Seems Gill is in charge of that.
Re new signings. A quality visa, A League ready AM to replace Lewis. That's presuming Sasse is let go. Then if keeping Rufer and Pennington (both basically DMs), you bring in a younger midfielder to develop over time to take Ugarković's spot. Just promote Karunaratne, or Conchie or McKay from Weenix, or some similar plan. Though if a quality non visa midfielder as a free agent around was available around the ALM (like Ugarković was a year ago) yeah make an offer. Antonis yes please.
Achol is already 23, and playing pub football in the UAE. He wouldn't come in near ALM ready like how Lewis was signed from Auckland City. I'd rather they go visa, and then some young promising Kiwi about 18-20, likely from Weenix - to fill the 2 spots. https://us.soccerway.com/players/manyumow-achol/521120/
The upcoming U23s games plus U20 WC will provide a shop window, for young NZ midfielders.

Latvia, not UAE
Yeah Achol only went to the UAE and played pub football for like 1 or 2 months for Steven Taylor’s team. He’s now at FK Auda in the Latvian league and won the Latvian Cup as a starting player.
Latvia isn’t exactly a world beating league but it’s not a bad level for a young kiwi.
Okay fair enough. But at 23 he ain't that young, and he's playing in Lativa. Greeny will obviously know him, so he'll have a gauge on how good he is or not.
What are the odds of getting McCowatt back? Contract expires next season and as far as I'm aware it hasn't been an overly successful spell over there; plodding away in second-tier Denmark.
Had a purple patch a year or two back when Just was still there but it seems like it's not going to happen for him this time around.

Personally, wasn’t ever sure if he was good enough.

Callan scored 1 goal and earned 2 assists in 1200’ in his season with the Nix. He was subbed on in 12 of his appearances.
In comparison, during that same season Reno Piscopo scored 2 goals and earned 3 assists in 1217’. He was subbed on in 4 games.
Yan Sasse this season has 2 goals and 1 assist in 725’. He’s been subbed on 4 times.
I reckon McCowatt is decent enough and has definitely improved since his season with the Nix, but were he to return I certainly wouldn’t be treating him as a guaranteed starter.
One excuse NO player can use is that the club has poor training facilities. They really are outstanding and World class. If I was an A League player, I'd visit them before I made any decision to join the club or not. Perhaps a free membership to Heretaunga Golf club as part of the sweetened deal might help swing some ;)
Glory confirm the signing of Oli Sail on a three-year deal, beginning next season. That’s goalkeepers Sail and Cameron Cook locked in until 2026. #aleagues

How long before we're suggesting the return of big stef marinovic as a bit of competition for paulsen?
I’d happily take him back. If signing someone like Tracey or Munford means we can afford much better players in other positions though then I’d rather that.
Stefan and Paulsen fighting for the #1 shirt isn't a bad idea.
Perhaps, but is big Stef gonna be happy having to fight with a 19/20 yr old for the #1 spot? Can't see it personally, he'll be chasing something bigger to close out his career - plus I'd like to think we have better options in mind for either #1 keeper or a decent back up.
I don't get it, Oli is what? 26? He wants to go to Europe and he signs a 3 year deal?? 29 is a bit late for trying your luck in Europe, even for a goalkeeper.

So instead of extending with the nix and getting the team that developed him a transfer fee, bro’s planning to pull a Cammy D

Having a fixed transfer value makes it far easier for his Agent to shop him around, like with Devlin. The Nix would want a lot more for a fee if he re-signed with us.

Hasn't Domey been going on about how Europe under prices the A Leadue and how that they were going to start holding out for half decent money. Double edged sword that if it means you start pissing off your players

Exactly what I responded to the article with. Screws the club out of any money whatsoever.

I forgot to mention, we actually got some cash in the Devlin transfer. Not sure why or if it will happen this time.

Yes. Development fee. Been with the academy since way before he was 23

Yeah, when Dome said the Nix were going to try and raise the price of players from the A-League, he also said it would only work if all teams followed suit. If the Nix get a reputation for not releasing players to European clubs because they want a return on their investment, it might mean players are reluctant to sign longer deals with us or will go to clubs who don't depend as much on the sale of players to make money.
Fair call Ryan, but in these cases with contracts up for renewal, couldn’t those players have negotiated the same type of deal that Sail is reputed to have at Perth - release clauses in the event of overseas interest? Why is Perth OK with that the Nix not? Makes me think there is more to the transfer than just that. Like most cases, wages, personal situation, want a change, etc will have an effect I assume.

Club needs to ensure high prized assets don't end up in this situation. TBH Oli has sat on the bench for a number of years (probably getting payed peanuts) so im not sure we can question his loyalty, the club have had every chance to pay him more or ship him off for a fee. Players careers are short and they need to maximise any potential earnings. I feel its more agents at play ensuring the best for their clients, rather than Oli scheming to screw the club.

I don’t begrudge him for moving sideways for more money, it’s more a frustration that the club doesn’t get any money from future transfers etc. the situation is annoying more than anything else. His loyalty never came into question from my perspective.
Perth mining billionaires aren't bothered trying to save money and won't skimp on trying to get transfer fees to fund the club?
Yep, Perth doesn't seem to make decisions with a view of building a sustainable team, they're pretty erratic. It would be interesting to compare the academy systems from the various teams, I'd imagine the Nix are right up there in academy investment the other teams that seem to focus on their academies are the Mariners and Adelaide..
