If we do sign another centre back we'll have 5 cb's in the squad even if we don't I can't help but feel moving to a 3 atb with wing backs could work well for us. Seen us switch to a back 5 a couple of times but that was when we were trying to hold on not really pushing the wing backs forward. Our wingbacks have been our biggest creative outlet with 7 assists from them so playing a back 3 would let us push higher and still protect us defensively. Also think Zawada would benefit from it as we'd be using the wingbacks to cross into the box a lot. I also think Payne and Laws would play better in a back as both good on the ball so can play the wider cb roles and maybe with 3 of them you'd hope they'd be able to cover each other better. lineup (45).png131.02 KB
Wellington Phoenix are still hopeful they can get a new signing over the line before the transfer window closes, after a deal for an undisclosed New Zealand centre-back fell through at the 11th hour.
Speaking after Friday’s 3-1 slip up away to bottom-place Melbourne Victory, coach Ufuk Talay reiterated his desire to strengthen his squad with a new defensive player after missing out on his number one target.
“There is another player we’re currently looking at and [who] we’ll be talking to so hopefully if it works [out] we can get him over the line and bring him into the squad,” Talay said.
Prior to the game, Talay revealed the Phoenix were “very close” to signing a new centre-back, only for the player to have second thoughts about moving to Wellington.
“We came very close and then it was just a last-minute change of thought process from the player.
