S23/24 E19 - Bob Dobalina The pod is back, baby, and here to talk the men scrapping a point in Adelaide, the women losing again in Australia, and Frostie's surname.
Apologies to hijack the thread, but just finished listening to the B2B podcast with Tim Brown. A truly awesome listen. Really hope Browny comes back to NZ one day in some capacity. A role probably beneath him now, but fudge he'd be a brilliant NZF CEO. He's a true leader, we need more Kiwis like him. Worth the time to have a listen, the ups, downs & ups again.
S23/24 E22 - Cynicism and Realism A depleted pod chat about the men's win over Newcastle, the women beating Canberra in an incident filled match, and the signing of Youstin Salas.
Thanks as well. Saving it for my waitangi morning flight to Wellington, my tradition to listen to the pods when I fly down. I assume next weeks pod will cover both Brisbane and CCM game rather than an extra pod early next week?
S23/24 E23 - Can you give us some lines? The pod are back with a bumper episode to talk about the depleted men's side drawing with Brisbane Roar and Central Coast Mariners, the women collect another single goal loss against Newcastle, and Frostie is welcomed into the Pennington fan club.
Kraev has had two shots from the top of the box he hasn’t got on target. Kosta lost 3-4 good opportunities in just the last game. These are our two best goal scorers outside Zawada and Pennington obviously. And we’re not even extending the same benefit of the doubt to a guy just starting to get regular minutes.
I dunno if he is a striker tbh, and certainly not a fox in the box/poacher type player. But that’s something that he can improve.
I was a OVH sceptic. But since then he’s got into two good one on one’s and missed just wide. He’s pressed and distributed well. He won a red card. He laid on a great goal for Kosta. He rarely dies with the ball. He made two great goal saving covering tackles. He’s strong on the ball and rarely gets pushed off.
He was up front because Chief was scared of Torres. I think on another day he’s at RB and Kraev is up front and we score 2-3 more.
I think he’s shown definite progress and also he’s a different player to Waine. They are emerging at similar ages, but are different kinds of players. Waine’s an instinctive goal scorer. He’s never getting a RB call or a midfield role.
I think as well that the goals will come. But he’s certainly been our most consistent attacking sub and I’d say as much as anything we’ve missed him taking the ball higher up the park with Kosta and keeping the opposition in two minds.
Not to be annoying but Waineo did actually play RWB for us once (maybe twice).
But I agree that him and OVH are fundamentally different players. OVH used to score a lot of goals, but never in the same way that Waineo did.
My one qualm with OVH is that whilst yes his minutes are tracking the same way that Waineo’s did, he’s a lot older than Ben was at the same point. Waineo had gone to Plymouth by the same age that OVH is now.
Oskar is still young and breaking through, but he needs to develop quickly to retain a spot in the squad.
Well compare him to Rufer or Louis Fenton. I’d say he has fewer weaknesses in his game than Louis, though Louis had determination. And he’s certainly ahead of Rufer at the same age.
To say he’s not exactly the same as a striker now getting minutes in iirc one of the top 6 leagues in the world, is setting the bar very high for homegrown talent.
I think he’s developing well this season and might have scored against WU if given the chance. If he plays as he’s done a goal is not far away.
I think recently he’s been our most in form attacking player. As you observe Old is injured and hot and cold. Kosta is still playing well, but seems to have stopped doing 6 impossible things before breakfast! I think Oskar has been the most consistent attacking contributor of late. Outside maybe Payne or Pennington…
And to say he’s close to being displaced by, say, Conchie or Supyk, simply can’t be true. Conchie has shown that he’s not fully developed as a player yet. Supyk has had good touches, but is slight and isn’t Marco, Old or Kosta from what we’ve seen so far.
OVH just needs a goal. Even better two. He's been close. It literally can be a game of inches. But he's not a striker like Waine. More a winger or Mr Versatile?
He's certainly physical. Frank's nephew is 4 years older than Supyk so I guess not surprising he's the one getting mins. Just needs that first goal, then the fan love will come.
But what if the goal never comes? It's quite possible that he never scores an A-League goal. He has improved this year but you can't say he has been knocking on the door or even vaguely threatening to score. I personally can't envisage it given all I've seen from him over the years. I'd love to be proven wrong...

I can't remember what game it was (about 2 months ago?) but he was through 1 v 1 and shot narrowly wide of the post. Then unselfishly in another game gave Barba the assist when he could have shot & scored himself. Against the Roar with a hard fair tackle near their box, he creates the turnover for Al-Taay to cross & Kraev to score.
You are starting to sound like someone, who just doesn't like him. Chiefy keeps picking him. He must see something.

At the moment I’d argue if the team keeps scoring and winning, provided he’s contributing elsewhere, it’s not a major problem yet. The goals have been shared around a lot this season. It’d be nice if him and Bally could step up and add to our goal threat.
If possible it’d be nice to have a point gap larger than 5 of us ahead down the stretch and win some games by more than two so we can enjoy the end of a game and end of the season!
Come on guys. I was BANNED for posting on this thread. I know why though. It was because I controversially argued that Pennington was not a bad player.
OVH is rather a good player, I would suggest. Give him time.

He also won us a pen (admittedly it was a soft one) to get us a point in the Melbourne Victory match.

I was poking around the membership area and couldn't find one.

yea I got that email too but I listen to pods in a podcast player.
No panic if it isn't an option, can just wait for the later release. But asking just in case.

I had a quick poke around as well, looks like it is possible to have an RSS feed, but the creator has to enable it in their settings before we can grab it.
I was able to listen to the pod, on the email there should be (well at least I did on my phone) a button to press Listen Now and then I opened it with Safari and it took me to the Patreon post with the podcast episode.
S23/24 E24 - Looked almost Pirlo like? The pod chat the men going clear at the top of the league after beating Western United, attempt to stitch together a team for the women's game, and answer your patreon questions.
Surprised the answer to who drops out of the match day squad was Conchie rather than Sheridan. One getting minutes and one not and covering RB seems to me to be one of the major reasons we've gone for Salas.
Fair point. I looked at it that Sheridan isn't really a regular squad player and has only filled in the last few weeks because of injury/suspension. So he should drop regardless of Salas. Whereas Conchie has been there most of the season.
Yeah looking back he's been a part of fewer matchday squads than I thought he had been 2ndBest

Risdon got away with absolutely murder against us on Danaskos’ reffing debut as well. Couldn’t buy a yellow.
I did wonder if Pennington had a civil case for damaging his career for the combined weak sanctions given against the players who kicked and shoulder charged him and the simulation call.

Really enjoyed this pod. Agreed with basically everything!
Favourite two chants (outside the classics which should be used in classrooms like the Yanks use the Pledge of Allegiance):
Krishna and Durante! Early days with my wife, they’re very danceable and they are chants that could just go round and round, especially on the days when Krishna was, well, on fire. And obviously we just can’t get enough of Durante. Somewhat outdated, but harder for us to get to a game these days.
And I also like a Twist and Shout because everyone knows the Beatles, a bit of call and response and a good bit of noise!
