Reddy, one of our heroes in the classic penalty shootout against Glory, is the starting keeper for Perth RedStar who are currently playing Queensland Lions in the Aus Cup. Brindell-South is also on the bench for Queensland.

Matt Ridenton (still only 28) was at the QLD Lions for 2 seasons 2022 & 2023.
But seems to be with Unattached FC these days, not having played football in 2024.

Lion winning easily 4-1 in Perth at 80 mins.

Always sad seeing a player's career sort of fizzle out. He should be entering the prime of his career now, and instead it looks like he's called it quits. Never thought that would happen to him when he was coming through under Merrick, regardless of the unfair scapegoating he often received (Although that was more in the Kalezic season I think).

Fenton as well, put his retirement on hold to sign with them. Probably been mentioned previously, but it looks like he's back in Wellington running his barber according to his Instagram which I can't fully access as I don't have an account.

Fenton didn't put his retirement on hold to play for them, he played for them while he was studying in Brisbane after he'd called time on his pro career.

He's owned the barbershop with his brother (who, by the way, has an equally amazing middle name) for years, since well before he retired from pro football.

My mistake, I wasn’t sure whether he was still doing his property management degree after signing with the Lions. I know it’s possible to do both but I just wasn’t 100%. Also yes I remember hearing about his barber before he announced his retirement.

Fenton studied Property Development at the University of Queensland. So look out for any new construction developments around Welly, with a lion symol or Hungarian football great signage. Hopefully he has more success at it than Lucas Neill

This is really disappointing considering around the end of last year, well before his Bournemouth deal, Alex signed a three year extension with us, meaning we beat out any possible interest from AFC at the time.

Totally this, we signed him and he was happy to stay, Corica wanted him, so Foley and co decide that Bournemouth will buy him, an offer to good to refuse some might say. Then, shock horror, he needs development so we'll loan him out to AFC!

I'm surprised Paulsen agreed, I also not in the story the league are yet to sanction the move - I'd hope that we put some kind of protest in - if that's even a thing. Also I find it odd that Paulsen would agree to the move - unless he's been promised a start for next season if he continues to perform well.

Why didn’t Nix put that in the transfer agreement?

Either management were more than happy with the $$$ or extremely naive.

On the pod Sean Gill said the Nix sought assurances that this couldn't happen - Nix will be fuming

I will see if I can find the quotes, I would assume the Nix will have to dispute this

This is unbelievable! Far worse than the Rudan saga. Far worse.

You gotta wonder about whoever is in charge of out transfers because this is farcical.

Not happy with Alex either, he should know this is not going to go down well and somewhat disrespectful to his former employer who has made him what he is today.

Biggest disaster, the season hasn't started yet and we already look like absolute muppets.

Right, but then the Caceres rule has some obvious loop hole that AFC are pretty confident about.

Which comes across again as incredibly naive.

I actually hope AFC/Nix haven’t totally burnt bridges. It would be a shame if the two clubs got into continuous spats over players.

Well, it's not that the clause has a loop hole, but rather that they *removed* the clause to allow this to happen. Just can't get over how gross it is.

Are we officially the most snaked team in the league?

Ok so Shaun Gill doesn't say specifically it turns out but it sounds like they were aware of the rule, but dont say they made sure with the APL or anything so who knows exactly, but maybe they didnt check to make sure their assumptions were correct.

Anyway here is the bit from the Pod (ep 3/24 ep 40 'You Say Yes)

Q: I bet you were stoked that the A-League's already got that 'A player can't be loaned out to a team in the same league'

Shaun Gill: Yeah that's ahh, that was definitely ahh,  you know when you sort of ahh, sat back and then you went, this is a good deal, Bournemouth wow, and then it was like, hang on a minute they've got some sort of a, they have a club down this part of the world, yeah it was interesting times

Yes. Phoenix management have been utterly bamboozled on this deal. They look like naive dorks and have blown a lot of their reputation as smart managers.

Not really, when the deal was done the Nix management would have believed that the Caceres rule would mean that Paulsen couldn't be loaned back to the Aleague, conveniently it appears as though the rule has been adjusted so it can be done.

Whatever happens, it will always be gross. Teams are always gonna be richer than others, but not every club will have an arsehole billionaire owner with limitless cash (for the A-League, anyway). Compared to the cashed up leagues in Europe, generally because our league is so tiny pot we haven't really had that much corruption or dodgy dealings outside of CFG. Auckland is ruining that already

"But Australian Professional Leagues have announced that the ‘Caceres Clause’ will be reviewed ahead of the 2024-25 season following feedback from clubs across the A-League, potentially paving the way for Auckland to sign Paulsen on loan."

Surely deals made before any amendment have to honour the rule that was in place at the time - especially as there has apparently been no amendment yet, just that they will look to amend it for this coming season.

So how can you announce a signing that currently is still not allowed, and then have faith that the process of amending the rule isn't being influenced by AFC trying to make it happen

Why would Alex take the move though? Like this doesnt further him or push him. He was a standout in the league, why come back? very odd decision from him.

also, not sure the nix look like muppets. They got a record signing fee for it. Even if he does play for them, we got $4mil for him!

The player needs to agree to the move or it doesnt happen. But maybe they said we dont see a future for you here unless you go.
And why would he be open to moving home? he has been away 5mins.

Looks like we got a whopping transfer fee within the A League.  Paulson got a whopping pay rise.

It is how this sort of arrangement is managed within the salary cap that is important.  But there have always been marquees outside the cap (I presume that still applies).  So I would think this is just life as we know it and how the bling clubs do business.

Let the rivalry commence.

I dont care where he is from, nor would I think that was really a deciding factor in this. I bet he is thinking about how he can develop into the best keeper he can be. I doubt going to auckland would be on the list of to dos if that was the aim.
