This. I wonder if the stadium has fire insurance, and if it's possible to burn it. My guess is no, no. We could sink it though.
A rectangular stadium should have been built in the beginning and basin reserve upgraded. Simple as that.
Wanganui stadium looked nice when i was up there last week..good on a summers night...bit of a road trip tho.

In the US it is common for teams to be hosted on the grounds of a university (LA Galaxy are based at California State University)... got me thinking about doing something with Kelburn Park in collaboration with VUW...
It's also common for US universities to have competitive sports teams in well-attended leagues with athletes who receive significant scholarship dollars. Somehow I don't think there's enough demand in Wellington for 15,000 paying customers to see Old Boys-University 1st XV. Otherwise the upgraded Boyd Wilson Field would have a lot more seating than the five or so benches recently added. VUW has no reason to build a stadium anytime soon, nor does any university in New Zealand.
We won't be.
I could just summarise it for you.

It's called realism.

You're probably right. But my idea (building a 15,000 seater at Kelburn Park with one end opening out to the city and harbour) is pretty f**king brilliant. And sometimes one brilliant idea beats a million 'realists.'

Brilliant? Really?
For:
- It'd be nice to have a 15k rectangular stadium fullstop
Against:
- No parking
- Cannot host concerts, a significant source of income for stadiums
- Will only host ~15 event days a year that would come even close to profitable
- Massive expenditure for the Phoenix who don't have the money
- Massive expenditure for VUW who have no reason to invest in a stadium
- Will certainly get blocked by residents association
- No guarantee the Phoenix will even exist by the time it gets completed
- Significantly less accessible for out of towners
- Roading infrastructure in the area insufficient to deal with accompanying traffic
- Would lose a decent community sports ground in the process, including the clubrooms for VUW's football and league teams.
- Up a big bloody hill that students whine about all the time (read - excuse for casuals to cop out of going to matches)
- No decent pubs nearby
- View of the city and harbour blocked by greenbelt anyway
Sorry mate, it's far from brilliant. And even if it were, one brilliant idea never beats a million realists when that one idea is financially absurd. Especially since decisions aren't made by the people with ideas - they're made by the people signing the cheque.
The only way we'd get a rectangular stadium is if WRFU wanted one. Which they seemingly don't. And if they did, it wouldn't be built at Kelburn Park.

I have no doubt that this has been discussed before, but the search function is difficult for someone like me to navigate.
Actually, too many results returned, not enough time to trawl through.
Could somebody please point me in the direction of any conversation we have had about the Nix moving from the ROF to a purpose built facility, or an established one. Then delete this thread.
Thanks

We won't be. Possible stadiums would be:
Basin - No lights so doesn't meet FFA criteria. Used for cricket in summer.
Newtown - too small. no lights.
Porirua Park. Too small.

Westpac stadiums public transport location = only reason we get any sort of a crowd.
Also,as if we have the money to fork out for a new stadium when we have a perfectly good one already. We barely have enough for players.
Would also suck to spend up on a purpose built stadium only for the FFA to decide they don't want us anymore.Tegal2010-11-06 11:45:45

did someone say....poooollllllll?
so there isnt a dedicated thread? i know the chances are pretty much non existent (stadium, not thread) but I was just kinda interested to read peoples view on it. It came up in a discussion I had with a couple of friends last night.
5-10k in a 36k stadium is a tad depressing, but no other real alternatives - my opinion. mikecj2010-11-06 16:36:00

Only one problem....Colours have been banned in Wanganui!
Least we know nobody would be wearing opposition colours

This is a good thread. Yes, it probably won't happen in the next couple
of years, but a purpose built stadium is exactly what the Phoenix needs
in the future so it's worth thinking about.

A boutique 15,000 seater with one end left 'open' so you can see the city and harbour in the background (same concept as the CCM stadium where one end is left open so you can see through to the sea).

It's called realism.
We barely had/have a team by the skin of our teeth...No side in Australia can really afford a cute little purpose built stadium for themselves, and we certainly cant.
Besides, the other reason we get crowds is because of the westpac stadiums proximity to public transport, and the culture of attending events at that stadium.
A purpose built stadium would have to be built out somewhere weird, where no one will bother going to.
Thirdly, what is the point in blowing millions that we dont have,on a new stadium, when we have an excellent one to use already?Tegal2010-11-07 16:58:28

I cant believe the crap in this thread.
The Nix are going to be rocketing up the table, the crowds will be back, the recession will end and the queue's will be stretching all the way back to the railway station.
I think my conversation with my friends didn't just involve the Phoenix. The fact that a 36,000+ stadium was built to hold predominately sub 20,000+ provincial games for Rugby, Cricket and now football was an interesting move. I mentioned nothing of the nix's current standing on the ladder or the recession.
The sea of yellow seats is just interesting, especially after watching MLS games on ESPN, a league that has built up with a lot of sponsorship help to a point where teams build their own grounds (or arenas as some over there call them).mikecj2010-11-07 20:05:41

Mls still has the money to do that.
It's an all purpose stadium,so the 36k is for events like the all blacks, all whites vs Bahrain, concerts. Even super 14 rugby gets 20k+ at times, and finals would be sellout or close to it.
They didn't build the stadium for low attendance (comparatively) like
the Phoenix. And the Phoenix can't afford to build a stadium for itself just because we don't get the crowd attendance to fill the current stadium

Two words.
Multi purpose.
The thing is the stadium was built to accommodate cricket when it didn't need to. If they were content with cricket down the road they could have had a rectangular stadium but it still would have been 30k+ capacity because of (primarily) the money made from concerts and big events like All Black tests.
Other Stadiums in the league have the same problem with empty seats (think Suncorp) and it's a minor issue anyway.

Not that close to filling, but some ODI's / T20s have definitely got more than the 12-14k that you can currently fit into the basin. Some have got about 20-25k from memory.
circular stadium offers the best viewing for all attendees, unlike a square/rectangular stadium where some viewpoints are not so desirable,
circular stadium offers the best viewing for all attendees, unlike a square/rectangular stadium where some viewpoints are not so desirable,
As a rectangle one, seating the edge on one of the long sides, would be a bit uncomfortable for the neck as you would have to turn to look at the far end, not the case for a circular stadium.
Phoenix home = Ring of fire.
No need for another stadium.
There is nothing wrong with empty seats - they are after all yellow which is our colour
The day may come when it's full for every home game

circular stadium offers the best viewing for all attendees, unlike a square/rectangular stadium where some viewpoints are not so desirable,
IMO the stadium doesn't offer good viewing for ANY attendees to be honest.
I can't possibly think how any area of a rectangular stadium would be worse than the ROF?

Rectangular: Good views, some, not so good views, some sh*t views
Circular: All views are kind of a bit sh*t.
