Another point to consider is the acoustics.
The RoFs shape, and particularly the undercover roofed areas tend to hold the crowd noise and focus it out to the field.
You know the positive effect that has had on the boys out there ..(up till last week,at least)
When you listen to the recent 5-7 thousand of us in full flight on the TV replays it sounds quite impressive, with larger crowds even better still..... way more so than similar or some larger crowds for other A-league teams in rectangular stadiums, particularly those without a roof.

You should be writing the coach's comment and sending it to me rather than getting involved in this discussion - have to send to printers' by end of lunchtime tomorrow at the latest, have a crazy arvo tomorrow.
That is what would have to happen.
Move logging ships to north of the Ferry teminal. New stadium in across the road, continue concourse over. Done. Mine's a cider.
Feverish would just love that, wouldn't he?
Cue explosion in Karori.
I'll open the gate.
Run a bulldozer throught the Ring of Fire and start again?
Compared to some grounds in the UK,( time has certainly not improved Abbey Stadium that's for sure), the Ring of Fire is a palace.
...? NHS and Waikato Stadium totally fit the bill as far as Hickey's requirements are concerned.
...but do they give him the chance to talk up Red Bull who have sponsored his street football comps and other things?

agree totally
yeah his credatility went through the floor when he says he chose to go to his own sponsors event. He is on the right track though in saying more focus needs to be placed on making the ASB games accessable to everyone, not just by getting to the stadium but on telly as well.
I also feel that at this point, I'd rather have a professional football team in the country before we worry about a stadium anywhere.
One thing at a time.
While this is a relatively pointless discussion, some useful context / background ...
The fact is that a new stadium was never going to happen (ie get sponsors backing, financing, members ticket sales, what have you) without it having the ability to hold one day cricket matches. At the time it was originally proposed one day cricket was a biggie and the basin just could not cater for the demand. Similarly, the Hurricanes sold out most games in the first couple of seasons and likewise Wgtn provincial rugby team (aka Lions) got some pretty good capacity-ish gates. Ironically (thanks Alanis), in the early days of the stadium, one day cricket was beset by bad weather (and some related pitch problems) and it never caught on as a legitimate cricket venue (one-day cricket's popularity waned as well). But going back to the original point, we would never have got it built without the cricket capability. An economic truth (which I had personal experience with).
So, we've got what we've got. We're lucky to have what we have.
Even though I for one would love to have an enclosed rectangular football stadium (a la AAMI stadium), that is a wee way away. If ever.

Hay. White mans valley could do with a lift, football only stadium, motorsport park but people and access may kill it Hogster2011-04-13 21:44:16
It's simple
Bigger Crowds=More Money=New Stadium
Bigger Crowds=More Money=New Stadium
= no resource consent for second stadium in small city.
Woops

The westpac is not perfect, but it is in the perfect location.
Jesus. Think how much of a disaster wellington sport would be in if they had built the new stadium next to Aotea College in Porirua- it would have been north harbour all over again......
What about McAlister park? Put the pitch running along side the massive hill. Bring in temporary lighting and get the crowd to sit on the hill.
The amount of money made would greatly outweigh the cost of setting it up.
Cameras can go on the hill too.
Would I be right in saying that this is so far, the best idea that has been presented?
Put temporary fencing around the area with black weed mat so people can't sneak a look.

Parking?
Transport?
Southerly?
Transport?
Southerly?
Mere details.
Parking near the show grounds and surrounding streets?
Get newtown school to open their school for parking.
Parking up the top of McAlister?
Transport.
Buses to newtown and island bay? Lots of buses go through newtown.
Southerly?
Harden the f**k up?

People bothering to turn up to what they view as a secondary standard ground that's harder to get to than the westpac stadium?
It's not viable in a geographically small city of only 400kish people. People just won't buy into it.

Get Parkie to write it instead.

Where is the airport-city light rail terminal?
From under Westpac, alongside station, quays, Kent/Cambridge, Basin, Newtown, Zoo, Kilbirnie, Airport...
North Harbour
HN is Fran Wilde in disguise.....!! Move over Celia... HN for Mayor.

No disagreement there. There's a real divide between the new/well looked after grounds and the old/neglected grounds.
The only thing I don't like about the RoF is that it's the wrong shape, but that's what we've got and it's all we're going to have for the foreseeable future. Any alternative is a pipe dream.
I've said it a hundred times but I'll say it again, the Stadium should never have been made to accomodate cricket.
1) It is a rubbish ground for a cricket match.
2) There is a perfectly good (albeit neglected) upgradeable cricket ground down the road.
3) The oval shape is rubbish for watching any type of football. (AFL isn't a real sport)
That's all easy to say in hindsight but thanks to typical Kiwi's preference of watching sport from the couch, there is no market to invest purpose-built stadiums here.
In the perfect world we would never have heard of 'The Cake Tin' , and we'd have more of a 'Bread Bin' for rectangular-code-football that seats 30,000+ and the Basin Reserve would be the best place in the world for 12,000 people to watch Test Match Cricket.
Should be a piece of piss to sort Westpac out though. Just dig the existing playing area down a couple of metres and then continue the seats down until they butt up hard against the sides of our now rectangular pitch. Would probably add about 5-6k to the capacity too. F**king easy. Don't know why everybody keeps moaning about it.
So all the green area outside the pitch itself would become seating
I will even hire the digger myself and knock that part off over a weekend (anybody got a truck?).
Think you'd need to jack up the rest of the stadium a few meters to manage this change, might be slightly tricky, lowering the ground might cause some interesting water table issues...
f**k knows why they ever built the double letter rows uncovered though- what was the point of that in Wellington*
* i have sat in Z in a horizontal rainstorm at a Lions game in the last year, and got wet, mind, so the idea of 'covered' is up for debate.

Question from the outside.... meaning I have no local knowledge...
In the early part of the thread it spoke of some stadiums that had poor lighting ... would it not be easier to get good lighting at a 10 to 12 K smaller stadium...
I think the stadium issue is a huge one for FFA ..... most teams are playing in stadiums way to big for the crowds we draw.... the cost of these is huge and it look piss poor on a broadcast....
Me thinks for most teams, playing like AU, out of a 15K stadium would be better and we can build to the larger stadiums .... as the league grows...
Just casually building a 15k seat stadium is also pretty expensive...
