Would a stadium at Heretaunga be any improvement accessibility-wise on Porirua Park?
NZCIS is right next to the train station so that’s one huge improvement over Porirua Park. I’d wager that there’s a greater number of Nix fans in the Hutt than in Porirua/Kāpiti as well.

As much as it would pain me to admit it, I'd probably say you're right. There are plenty of fans this side of the range, but either way, it's not ideal. I've never understood why there wasn't some sort of rail link between UH and Ptown / Waikanae.

Who else has heard of this? Or can add more details?

I had heard a while ago (maybe 6+ months) that they were interested in the idea but the local council wasn't. Think they were keen to invest some money in getting the train station upgraded.

National wants to start building the Petone to Grenada link road asap but I wouldn't hold my breath for them to consider including a rail link in the plans.

Economics I'd say. Would need to be a tunnel most of the way and it would be something like 5 times as long as the Wellington to Tawa one. That's super expensive given how few people would use it.

Was more talking from a historical perspective. Total non-starter these days. I'm just annoyed as it makes getting to Brewtown a pain :D

The new road wouldn't do much for me either, I've never been one to drive to football as I like the opportunity for a drink. I also get a buzz from being on PT with like minded folk.

If we ever did end up with a stadium at the NZCIS, maybe they could look at running buses from the club rooms of the football clubs on the Coast side. Something to help mitigate any drop off of fans from there.

That’s been my dream since Brewtown was built lol, even mocked up how a stadium would look on the big field in the middle. Unfortunately there’s no room now that the new carpark and alterations to the field have gone in.

The UHCC have just invested in new club rooms for the Rugby and other minor unimportant groups. Maidstone Park would have been perfect for a 12,000 stadium. Next to Brewtown, Next to a major railway station.

nzcis and brew town are both owned by the same family. But maybe just run shuttles between the two facilities is enough.

Crowd numbers at semi final and final games jump exponentially! Hurricanes are expecting 30k+ on saturday, which is double what they've had week in week out. Similar to the nix really. Says something about the NZ/Wellington sports fan, we love an event (ie a knock out game) but a regular league game is just for the hardcore fans.

So true. And then there's places like Melbourne and Sydney who might get an extra 5k to finals games but don't manage to sell out in popularions of 4 million. But then the derbies are huge. Go figure...

Good for Auckland FC that Mt Smart's (Go Media) playing surface is also rated highly at 3rd. Admittedly off only a one game sample, Nix playing there once last season.

Certainly seems one thing that NZ does alot better than Australia - producing top class football pitches.

good grass growing weather probably helps, ie we dont get the long hard dry spells they do, nor do we currently get the ridiculous rain/flooding either. plus their grounds are used way more regularly than ours - particularly the Melbourne grounds.

I will never understand why the trust don’t want to do anything to make the stadium better as a viewing spectacle. Why don't they do something with the yellow seats, sponsors, city name painted over etc like most stadiums ever built. I really just don't get it from them. The stadium is in the best location, but has the worst people overseeing it. Surely a upgrade is due for the seating etc. Anyone know if anything is in the works?

Would hardly break the bank doing a few seating upgrades… I would get sky involved. Seating covers would look good over empty where they can. The stadium needs to start investing in these type of things. Yellow seats are so bad

What about those yellow seats? Have you ever considered changing colour?

Not really, mainly because there are other pressing requirements that we feel we would get a better bang for our buck from. Changing the colours of the seats might make people feel better about themselves watching on TV, but it doesn’t actually bring an extra person in the stadium. We like our yellow.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/300994793/shane-harmon-reveals-his-true-thoughts-on-the-colour-of-sky-stadiums-seats

Unless the new Sky Stadium CEO has a new set of priorities, new seating colours are waaaaaay down the list of priorities for their upgrades.

And there lies the problem, mindsets stuck in old ways. I would go to sky and ask them to front up something with, what have they done to enhance viewing…. Surely that is great advertising for them as well. We need to do things different, heck even Solomon Islands have this at there ground hahahaha

Is it not completely normal for the colour of a stadiums seats to match the predominant sporting colour of the city it's in? I for one quite like our yellow seats... wouldn't be much of a ring of fire without them!

Presumably to put the sky logos on the seats, which will have to be replaced whenever there's an international fixture. Also, sky's corporate colours are not Wellingtons

Only if it’s a stadium that is often full. It’s more common for clubs who often have their name or initials spelt out. For NZ’s stadiums a random mix of seat colours would be more beneficial as it would make all stadiums seem fuller then they are. A very good visual trick used in Australia and elsewhere a lot

There isn't much you can do to change the viewing experience in the cake tin. All I can think of with the seats is - can't you like brighten the yellow of the seats by heating the plastic? Regardless, the change is fairly minor and would hardly bring in more people even if you changed the seats completely.

That said, I still don't like the cake tin. Best venues in NZ for football viewing would have to be like Mt Smart or Forsyth Barr. Once the Chch stadium is built I fear that Wellington will have basically been left behind in terms of live sport viewing experiences in NZ cities (aside from TGA which is full of retirees and conservatives who won't spend a cent on a stadium). To add to that I think the cake tin will remain as the main stadium in Welly for another 25 years? Long time to be left with something that is kinda shark at its main purpose - viewing sports on rectangular fields

Given when the stadium was built (25 years ago) cricket was booming and packing stadia, over the years cricket has become less of a drawcard and the shape has become a hinderance, still as a fan tyou have the best unblocked view of anywhere. The thought of dealing with that stadium for another 25 years is dreadful.
