Basin has too many problems for parking and access, it's okay for small cricket crowds and the odd one off event but every second week would be too much, the locals are also opposed to lights being put in.

If you remove all clouded nostalgia, the Basin should be replaced by a street. With the money we saved by building crazy bypass structures and the economic costs of blocking traffic, we could build the most amazing stadium with a roof, heated seats and garage project beer taps integrated in every multicolored seat.
Surge is right, we don't have much heritage here. The Basin Reserve is rated as one of the worlds top ten roundabouts. We should pay for a bypass by charging tourists to drive round it.

Worlds worst roundabout now thanks to the traffic lights tbh.
(not saying that it's badly designed as a road facility, it's just not really a roundabout at all anymore, its functioning better than ever thanks to the Arras tunnel though)

Meh, you buy next to a sports ground, then you'd have to reasonably expect lights to go in at some point. So the locals can piss off.

To be honest, the only people who have grounds to complain about lights were the ones who lived there before the Basin was turned into a cricket ground back in 1868.
Just saying it would be a heck of a battle to build a stadium that's going to have 8 - 10k people thronging to it every second week when Cricket NZ / the Wellington stadium trust can't even get lights in for a handful of day night cricket matches a year.
And yes NIMBYs have ruined a lot of things, like when an apartment block was built next to the Matterhorn in the late 90s and complained about the noise, so it had to stop being a great live venue (which opened in the 60s) and instead became a restaurant. Also those apartment owners in Thorndon that sued the cathedral because the bells were annoying.
Well, I'd extend that to 1878 - the first year any sport was played under lights.
If anybody has lived there since before 1878, then they couldn't have reasonably expected that there might be lights installed in the sports ground when they purchased the house.

It also depends on agreements made.
If the basin owners said there wont ever be lights, and they wont turn it into another sports stadium, and then they build a football stadium with lights, you'd have the right to be miffed.
I'd be stoked if I owned an apartment there as you wouldn't have to travel far to games. But if you couldn't sleep all week because of the lights for a day night one dayer, after it was promised it wouldnt happen, I could empathise with that.

They are what's known as CAVES - Citizens Against Virtually Everything.

Everyone here seems to be against NIMBYs - that is until something they don't like is being proposed to be built next their home and they become one.
Except me. Only things I dont want is a gang hq or something very noisey. However, a stadium is fine by me.

naturally people try and defend their way of life - so yeah sure everyone can be a bit defensive sometimes.
A nimby however would be someone who base level has no real issue with the development that has been proposed, but they just don't want it done near them - those are the people who are annoying.
people who are ignorant and don't get sport etc etc can be ignored, but people who can see the benefit but are like, yeah na not there thanks are the ones who are super frustrating.
Yeah, like complaining about cycleways, which saves lives, reduces congestion, and makes the community healthier, because they don't like the fact that it narrows the roads (but is still wide enough for two cars comfortably)

the SKY path in Auckland was an interesting one - community groups on both sides of the bridge complained about it, complaints like it will bring more foot traffic etc etc.
Seriously? more foot traffic? talk about glass half full, how about on the positive side less actual traffic!!
People complaining about how much it cost and where that money was coming from was slightly more understandable.

There might be room opposite Te Papa and behind the Reading Cinema for a Small rectangular stadium soon.

But what about parking?
Plenty of places in Wngtn to build a boutique stadium. Just bulldoze a hillside on the periphery. Karori. Makara. Crofton Downs. J'ville. Hutt Valley....

Perfect opportunity for an underground parking (under the pitch) free of charge with a game ticket.

It's no worse then the Oval in London which also happens to be very close to London Waterloo train station. It has traffic issues NZ as a whole could only dream about.

Do you mean Vauxhall station? The Oval is about 2 miles from Waterloo.
A roundabout can have traffic lights, I remember much controversy a few years ago when NZ Roading Engineering magazine gave a company it's prestigious innovation award for designing and building a roundabout with traffic lights. The controversy wasn't because a roundabout cannot have traffic lights, the controversy was because it wasn't particularly innovative.
Gorgeous stadium, 5k capacity, perfect for us....

Bradford City would have a few arguments against a wooden stadium..
Mike Cockerill on need for purpose-built stadia in the A-League:

He's giving the thumbs up to Christchurch-based Russian multi-millionaire Slava Meyn who plans to add a football stadium to his existing Christchurch portfolio of football academy in Yaldhurst, Christchurch United club side and Dutch and Brazilian coaching staff.
"Maybe Slava Meyn has a solution. A Russian businessman who eventually wants to construct a boutique stadium near Christchurch airport in New Zealand to go with his academy, Meyn isn't interested in a quote from local builders. Instead he's gone to China, sourced the products he needs, and intends to have them certified to NZ standards before shipping them to Christchurch to be re-assembled. I had a look at his plans and his facilities last year, and he gets my vote."

I believe the Union Berlin fans even had a working bee to upgrade the ground a few years ago
politics destroy football. perhaps we should play running man, no stadiums needed only pay per view
Doubt this will ever happen
Will she ACT on that?

Its only 1 billion, a drop in the tax bucket. Just need to re-mane it Kupenida Project.

If they do go through with this, I wonder if they could implement a pitch. Could use a 12,000 seater indoor stadium. Doubt it though on both counts of the pitch and the actual construction
