Watch the a league insider episode on Rufer, at one point he asks Ufuk what he wants to do in the game and Ufuk said "whatever you've planned" so it seems as though he's fairly involved as an assistant coach.
There was a good article on him on stuff a few weeks ago.
No reason really, maybe just because there's been a bit of press about Chiefy over the last few days and the press has been asking Ufuk and the players if they think he can do it.
Also there was mention of a consistent playing philosophy. If we’re going to continue from roughly where Talay left off, Italiano seems like a more logical choice than others. Especially as we have some key players already signed for next season.
One of the best in the league and the best Nix coach ever (so far).
- Best ever finish in a debut season (3rd) - Best ever finish in Australia Cup (semi-final) - Introduced an attractive brand of football - Great eye for recruitment - Promoted players from within the academy - Changed our team into top 6 contenders every season (championship contender in the first season)

Being a top six contender isn't really an achievement though, it just means your average.
Also has he been that good on promoting youth talent? If I recall correctly we're pretty middle of the road on youth minutes.

Rudan arguably did better at the last 4 points.
I'd still take Talay as my fav coach though, because he didn't quit his contract and do a bunch of shady/dodgy/dickhead/illegal things.
I hate to say it, but on all the metrics being used for "best ever coach" here, you'd have to give it to Herbert, who signed Ifill and Greenacre and led us onto our only significant finals run

I tend to agree, I think he achieved a lot more with a lot less. It wasn't particularly pretty a lot of the time but it did often work.
Definitely don't want to go back to that (lack of) style though.

good times, very good crowds at those playoff games

I mean we barely used to make the top 6 before that.

Had a lot less resources though, specifically in the Herbert era.
"The Wellington Phoenix plan to announce the men’s new head coach next week." - a very pleasant surprise if true!
Welnix not NZF so no real reason to be surprised.
It is a lot more time sensitive to be fair. A lot of players are off contract soon, and not having a coach will make it more difficult to resolve those - who would the new coach want and who do they not? Players also would prefer to know who the coach is before signing, both re-signings and new signings.
The All Whites' next competitive match is probably next year and the U23s in August or September. There's no rush; players aren't really going to join other countries because a coach hasn't been hired two months out from the next friendly.

The only Phoenix coach to win a post-regular season game?
Is there a current forum thread discussing tactics? It's a been a curious season, tactically, in my opinion.

Rudan’s recruitment was bang average. Taylor, Kurto and Williams were excellent but the likes of Sheridan, Mandi, Burgess, Kopczynski and Golec weren’t anything special, plus Gulley, Way and Nichols were awful.

In a thread on the coach- so go for it…or start a new thread…

In Marko’s defence he didn’t have long to prepare and he had a lot of recruiting to do. All 5 visa spots? The off season was already well underway before he was appointed. Burgess was a good cheap pickup, handy enough to push Singh to the bench for the playoff. Mandi was okay, if at always risk of a card
Rudan had barely left the building before Talay came in, and there was more squad continuity than his predecessor had
I hope it's not Italiano, why should be the assistant coach suddenly inject never seen before confidence and finals running skill to the Team. I don't want to see Greenacre either. I want an outside coach that is hungry and is making a commitment to move here embrace Wellington and inject something new. No risk, no fun.

why are so many people desperately hoping that it is going to be him? what are these opinions based on?
he could be the best choice for all we know. but i don't see how anyone on here or twitter would have the slightest clue

if any internal appointment does take place, i'll be looking for clues that it is not a soft appointment. i don't want to see statements like 'is popular with players' and 'continuation from uffie'.
i'm hoping that the the club, it's football department and coaching structures have reached a level of maturity where they can conduct a proper analysis and make good decisions.
my personal opinion is that the coaching structures are excellent. however the oversight (club management and footballing department) are still weak (not unusual for the a-league).
this is where you need outside input to / review of the appintment process. especially when there are internal applicants. i belive the technical term is avoiding a circle jerk ;-)
Shame to see a good coach leave but can't begrudge Uffy after what he's done. I'm sure many of use are traumatised having lived through the Kalezic era but the club as a whole seems to be in such a better place behind the scenes and recruiting has clearly not been entirely down to Uffy. Onwards and upwards

Bloody hell, I went back and checked and I could have sworn that we won a post-season game under Merrick, but no; three times under Herbert, never again.

is anyone desperate for it to be him? It just seems in character, continuity, etc.
Serious question. Is Italiano, the slightly chubby chap who always seems to be about to assault the other teams bench? Or is that someone else?
He is not attacking opposition bench. He is in charge of set pieces, so whenever we have a set piece, Uffie steps back and Chiefy bounds up to bark orders, which looks like he’s attacking opposition bench if the corner is down that end.
Apparently footballers can’t remember from one minute to the next what they are supposed to do, let alone what they were told yesterday in training, which is the same reasoning behind referees telling goalkeepers every time there is a penalty they have to stay on their line and can’t step forward until it’s kicked, telling all the players they aren’t allowed in the box until the penalty is taken, telling the wall where they have to stand on a free kick and they can’t step over his foam line, telling everyone every corner they are not allowed to push and shove each other etc.
Man hearing about the Herbert days makes me jealous that I became a member the year after he finished.
It was exciting because the team was new but the quality of football was terrible. It was easier to get into the finals back then being 6 finalist positions for 10 teams from 2009, i.e more than half the league qualified for the finals. The rose tinted glasses are firmly on.

This. When I said that Herbert was statistically our greatest coach, I was pointing out the silliness of the statistical methods. Herbert lucked out by getting Ifill and Greenacre, plus a core of really stalwart locals (Sigmund, Brown, Paston AND Moss) but many of his other recruitments, especially early on, were sheer comedy. Ask old timers about Cleberson, or Jiang Chen.

Dude’s 7 years old, cut them some slack!
Hey hey hey. 10 years.
But 100% a fake fan. I haaaaated Football untill that WC, then I planned to go to some games but went to like 3 over the space of 3 years so got a season pass to commit. Then never looked back.
Really wished I fell in love with football when the Nix started because I am jelly as of foundation members and their fancy membership cards.

The league has improved so much too. We were a fun team to watch and one that was capable of heroics. But we churned through a lot of hit or miss imports (but so did the league as a whole at that time) and got lucky in that a good range of kiwi players- Lochy, Smeltzy, Horse, Brown, Mossy, Paston, Christie, Bertos- who were established players in pro environments overseas were able to be lured back to the project. Herbert’s teams also got the benefit of enormous WC generated goodwill with the population at large. I remember going for a curry after a game and people who hadn’t attended randomly asking me the score. It was novel, parochial and popular. I feel like until those years no one really believed Kiwis could play football, outside a few anomalies living a long way away.
However, the reason why I thought Uffie was more likely to win a premiership was his teams usually find a balance and play consistently for long periods of time. At best they can control possession, the tempo of the game and simply take the opposition out of the picture. With Uffie at his best we tell the opposition how we’re guna play and they simply can’t stop us. This year we haven’t had that settled run of previous years, otherwise we’d be right in the mix for a top two spot. I honestly think it’s because Ugarkovic wasn’t able to take the mantle from Lewis, as he was picked up to do.
Interesting that Italiano seems to be expected to be named as the new Nix coach tomorrow but his name never came up in the All Whites dicussions on here?
He would of fit most criteria seeing as he would have a good knowledge of the local football scene after being at the Nix for a while.
Not saying I want him as the AW (or even the Nix coach), but it's interesting he's clear fav for one and wasn't discussed for the other (that I can remember).
