Dunno if he'd tick Chief's boxes, but we could do far worse.

The way Oli played out from the back for the Glory last season, I don't know about that.

I'd still have him over an untested academy GK. Expect we'll go the import route though.

Adding to that at the crime scene of his worst moments Tim Payne is often seen…

Yeah, combine his form last season with the tail end of his last season with us - I'd be quite content not having him back.

His end of season form was ok once he got his spot back... but lets be honest the whole of Perth went to sharke last year.

Seems a lot of positive buzz around this bloke. Guess we will have to wait and see if Uffie can get the best out of him.

Looks like CCM have landed Trent Sainsbury, that is massive.

Mauragis / Kaltak / Sainsbury / Roux

That is a pretty decent ALM back four.

He's 32 now, and his last game for the Socceroos was almost exactly 2 years, when him and Degenek, struggled to contain Wood - despite basically double teaming him - as the All Whites lost 1-0 to a Mabil solo effort. Was at the game in Brisbane. Arnie then not picking Sainsbury for the Qatar WC (or since), despite playing most of the qualifiers leading in.

Been playing in the Qatari league the last 2 years. But yeah he'd likely still be a quality CB in the ALM, if fit. Nice pickup for the Mariners with Hall gone to AFC.

To be fair, Wroclaw is a beautiful city, probably costs about half as much to live compared to Sydney, and everyone already speaks his language. I think I'd do the same tbh 😂

I love this, always great to see when a big player comes home. Obviously he's older and might be half cooked, but it's good for the league - even just for the nostalgia alone of the era of his first stint, when the league as a whole looked a lot more bright and healthy

Sydney getting a Brazilian?

This is a terrible sauce but I'm gonna post it cuz it is a classic A-League signing if it happens to be him.

Marcus Younis is likely to be on his way from WSW. Was hoping the Dons were going to win the race, but sounds like it's going to be PSV via a loan at Hamburg.

A genuine star still in Brazil by the sounds of it. Expect a few Brazilians to turn up to watch him play at the ROF and Mt Smart.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/350391300/former-juventus-and-bayern-munich-star-douglas-costa-coming-league

He also boasts a huge social media presence, with more than 6 million followers on Instagram, which will bring much-needed exposure to the A-League Men at a critical point in the competition’s juncture - as well as hopefully unlock the support of the city’s sizeable Brazilian community for the Sky Blues.

The key question, as with all such moves for big-name players in the latter part of their careers, will be if Costa can hold up his end of the bargain on the field.

His 22 appearances for Fluminense this year were mostly as a substitute, and he returned just one assist and no goals before deciding to terminate his contract.

“[Costa] is one of the most high-profile footballers to ever play on these shores and the eyes of the football world will be on Sydney FC and the A-League this season,” said Sydney FC chairman Scott Barlow.

“Douglas is a proven winner, and his record of titles in the world’s top leagues is testament to that. This is yet another landmark signing in our club’s history and we welcome Douglas to Australia.”

The Sky Blues have shown a sharper interest in Brazilian talent of late, largely due to the well-connected former midfielder Alexander Baumjohann, who is now their director of player management.

Baumjohann once played in Brazil and helped clinch the signature of Leo Sena, the former Italian Serie A midfielder whose career was derailed by legal issues related to a bout of Covid-19.

He was on $3,000,000 USD in the MLS, although I'm sure he's cheaper as he didn't perform it's still a big investment by Sydney and if he goes well a sugar hit that the A-League needs.

They might be spending on that one player what some teams spend on their entire squads with the A-League salary cap minimum being around $1,500,000 USD.

The comments from Brazilians on instagram aren't exactly positive, one guy even said "coitado desse time..." or "that poor team"

tbh even if he's washed I can't see him being so bad he's a detriment to Sydney but then again we're thinking of the fans and attention this could bring in and not just his skill as a player.

Big signing, I thought we'd seen the last of these sort of old marquee signings a few years ago when Nani and Charlie Austin didn't work out.

I feel like marquee wingers are a bit of a hard one  - before Nani did his ACL he seemed to make some good plays for Victory but it usually amounted to nothing as they had no one else that could take advantage of what he created.

It'll definitely be interesting to see how he goes and see how dedicated he is. If he can show glimpses of his best it'll be an exciting watch - so long as he has no form whatsoever against the Nix

He's not as old as a lot of the other big signing have been, so there is that. Also not coming in off a big injury so there is that.

Lack of minutes in the MLS in part because the quality has improved so much over the last 10 years??

Uffie also says that Sydney are looking for a CB. Will need to be an Aussie now their visas are full.

From Wikipedia:
" De Silva joined new A-League Men side Macarthur FC in July 2021 on a two-year contract.[16] He left Macarthur at the expiry of his contract in June 2023 to pursue overseas opportunities.[17] However, he re-joined Macarthur in July 2023 after a brief period as a free agent, following further discussions with Macarthur coach Mile Sterjovski.[18] Once again, at the conclusion of that season, De Silva left Macarthur at the expiry of his contract,[19] and then after 3 months as a free agent re-joined the club once again.[20] This was the second off-season in a row that De Silva was released by the club to seek other opportunities, only to re-join the club. "

As they say, peak a-league.

That is a ton of cash to turn down. Wonder if they try and sell him with a season long loan back to them. They are chasing 1 more Aussie CB atm, trying to find 2 would be rather hard.
