Borderline disrespectful starting XI for NUFC but that's what you get scheduling a game like this a week after the end of epl season. Fan turnout is also looking pretty lean

Yeah I reckon the Womens game will have a bigger crowd - this game kicked off at 5:05pm local time so a lot of people would've only just gotten off work when this started
Old and Paulsen did not impress tonight. They should have looked far better against this rabble. Our chances of keeping them for next season have gone up.

What game were you watching? Paulsen had little to do and Old was very good
old missed an empty net and hit another couple of shots wide which should have been put on target. Paulsen made a couple of rudimentary saves but his distribution was piss-poor. whatever

Ben Old did well. Too early for him to head over to Europe however. Probably betfer than Ben Waine, but no doubt will tap into Waine’s disappointing start to his European career before making a decision.whatever

Paulsen had nothing to do and Old had a couple of bad touches amongst a lot of excellent ones.
If Old was tidying everything up there he’d already be out of the A League. Even in the top leagues in the top teams players miss the target, especially trying to beat a keeper at the near post.
Ben Old got Man of the Match - made it clear in his interview he's hoping for a move to Europe this off-season (He said hes hoping this July if not, then next year)

And Ben Waine is number two striker at a Championship club. He’s had decent minutes considering that. He’s got a season goal tally of 5 and an assist in all competitions.
Sure he hasn’t set the world on fire, and maybe a competition down would have seen him with more game time, but he’s done very well in comparison to say Stanger or Pijnaker from the same under age WC side.
There’s a number of players out there for Newcastle tonight who may never play as much in the Championship as Ben’s done this season!
will be very interesting then to see what offers come in, from whom, and where the club sets the bar. If he’s still on contract at the end of next season then they could wait out until a decent offer comes in.
Half a Pint

Ben Old didn't look the pick of the players out there tonight for me, I'm a bit surprised that he was named man of the match.
I'm not saying he looked bad, but that he should have looked better against easily the worst football team I have ever seen on television.
And he'd be a fool to leave the A-League this offseason. Look at Singh, look at Rojas, look at Kuol, look at Arzani, etc etc. He's too young, he should wait one more year.
Edit: at one point he was being given the run around in midfield by a guy he was tailing desperately for 10-15 seconds, didn't get near the ball. Looked like a bit of an idiot.
Clear naivety from whoever organised this fixture. Newcastle were clearly not contractually obligated to play anyone anywhere near the first team and so they proceeded to not do that. That's all there is to it. Forget the noise about it being within a week of the PL season ending, Newcastle signed up to that. APL or whoever was organising it should have paid a little more to ensure that at least some pseudo first teamers would make some cameos. What happened last night was no good for anyone, a complete waste of the players' and fans' time.
you don't honestly believe that the contractual terms for the teams that played competitive sides were the same as the terms for this game?Ryan
Remember that Newcastle is also doing this to increase their global fan base. Previous clubs to tour have provided competitive squads.
I think it was naivety by Newcastle
I've got no idea, and neither do you. But the tour is not just a money making exercise, it's also a marketing exercise in order for Newcastle to grow it's global fanbase and as such Newcastle is incentivized to field a competitive team. This is a marketing blow to them and goes against what they were there to do, not to mention demoralising and detrimental to their reserve squad.
Really it's a grift, and Newcastle should be embarrassed.
