Bottom 4 teams are football clubs, top 4 are exercises in power, money, politics and marketing.
I want to explain the problem with these boardroom franchise dreams; using just one example.
Look at this map of south west Sydney - with Liverpool and Campbelltown as the axis of the Marcarthur South West bid. There are currently no NPL Div 1 teams in that corridor. The NPL Div 1 clubs are based at Bossley Park (Marconi), Edensor Park (Sydney United), Bonnyrigg (Bonnyrigg White Eagles); but Macarthur SW would be expecting their fan base to include supporters of those clubs as they are closer to Liverpool than Parramatta (Western Sydney Wanderers).
Sydney United and Bonnyrigg games still exclude almost all fans of both clubs due to violence in 2005. Two NPL2 clubs (the blue dots) are Macarthur Rams (Campbelltown district) and Mounties Wanderers at Mt Pritchard. There are other NPL 3 clubs and junior clubs.
Yes, it is probably the highest growth district in Australia, and currently there is a vacuum of a high profile/supported football club. So that is what the money men/women and marketers are looking at, hence the bid and FFA's support.
Football in this part of the world IS tribal, it provides identity and culture. FFA are banking on another WSW, but I can't imagine they aren't thinking they will attract fans from Sydney United, Bonnyrigg, or Marconi. But parachuting a franchise into this particular area, an area with real rivalry built up over decades by clubs with years of history, development, and experience running football from 4 years of age to pro isn't the way to do it.
My solution? Build the proper pro/rel football pyramid. Teams will rise from this area, there is no doubt.

Best I've seen is leave a-league for 2 seasons and get 2nd tier up and running - the top plays bottom of HAL
Down to name calling by supporters: Yes a South Melbourne Fan
"What's clear to me from this process is that there are far more than 2 bids worthy of entry. Not only that, some of the candidates are superior to existing clubs. All are superior to Wellington (obviously). Gong is superior to Central Coast. Southern Expansion, as unlikable are they are, would have more from day one than Sydney FC has achieved in 13 years. Team 11 and SMFC are superior to what Heart was, and it's only their cashed up owners getting them ahead.
IMO FFA needs to accept 6 of the bids with staggered entry. SMFC and Macarthur immediately, Team 11 and SEX in 3 years (when their stadiums are ready), then Ipswich and Canberra 3 years after that."
Just remember Blew, we were the colonists, they were the convicts.

Maybe that's why both South Australia and NZ hate Victorians, we're both colonists ?
Yes many Kiwis may not be aware but SA was not a penal colony.
Only state in Australia that wasn’t I believe, which Adelaide folk take some pride in.

Interesting, but we're the only state that didn't get sent convicts. That's the point we're getting at.
I've reached out to a number of the bids and they deny the FFA has informed them of a fast tracking of the decision. https://t.co/zYKL1ovMK6

Rumours are coming out that South Melbourne are the leading bid, and not Team 11 after all, after apparently the state government are siding with South. As well as that, the Tasmanian backers are apparently back in Victoria behind South also!
And because of all this dragging Team 11 down, Canberra might be a decent chance now.
I have no source apart from a guy on another forum, so.... Don't quote me on this.
Is football in Oz ready for a national second tier.
We don’t need talk negative about other bids. Our bid document does the talking; a FFA/AFC approved stadium ready to go from Day 1, $26m Campbeltown centre of excellance starting next year & population of approx 750,000 and funded with Australian Money. Wishing all bids the best

Locked by subscription but.....
The article says "it's understood" 2 teams 19/20 and two more "in 2020".
It also lists the license fees offered by bidders; 15 million by WMG, SM and SEX, 10 million by T11, SWS and Canberra, 5 million by Gong and Ipswich.
"
SA’S A-LEAGUE EXPANSION CLUB DILEMMASOUTH Australia’s chances of having a new A-League club are diminishing fast. Licence fees have skyrocketed by 1500 per cent in 13 years, judging by what some new franchise hopefuls are willing to hand to FFA as the game continues to boom with participation"
FFA settling HAL clubs up or is it a fair move?
While the FFA board will still wield the power to make the final selection on its own, the fact that the A-League clubs are now eager to weigh in on the matter represents the removal of a significant roadblock.
5 Days to EGM - Last Friday befor EGM
Has the FFA called a press conference for this afternoon?
My hopes for the new A league management...
Support what's there already - including small-centre clubs - Newcastle, Wellington, and CCM. It's too soon for promotion relegation.
Encourage a bid from Auckland - the only large city without a club.
Grow steadily, not too fast, over the next 5-10 years - maybe 18 teams and a 34 game season eventually.
Better management, bigger crowds, more interest.
The Fans across the blue Favoured options:
Year 1: Set up a 2nd division tomorrow and call it A2. Winner of that, subject to predetermined criteria, goes up. No relegation from A1 for years 1 to 6.
Year 2: Rinse repeat for next 5 years. Setup A3 and promote to A2 to fill gap left from A1 promotion.
Year 7: 16 teams now in A1. (10-12 to 14-16 teams in A2. A3 set up also.) Pro / rel starts. 2 legged playoff to see if there’s a promotion or not.
That’s 6 years for all the A1 teams to sort their shark out before they’re at a minor risk of being relegated. New teams into A2 or A3 can either be made up entities (Southern expansion) or existing (Wolves, South Melb).
Note: Whatever the predetermined criteria is it cannot include crowd numbers as a criterion. If the team is good enough, can show they have a business plan and the funding then they’re in.
My idea is something along similar lines but you get the gist of what is the roadmap.
Year 1-2 - I would concentrate on getting the A2 correct.
Year 3 - Promote two teams
Year 4 - Promote two teams
Year 5 - Promote two teams
Year 6 - Pro / Rel. Maybe 1 up and 1 down automatic and the other one a play off between 2nd place A2 and 2nd last place A-league. It might be 2 up 2 down. However you want to do it, the permutations are endless.
It gives everyone enough time to get their shark in order. The interest is there from the start, especially seeing who gets promoted and then later in year 6 and beyond on who gets promoted / relegated. Fox or some other broadcaster would get on board with this. It will take 6-7 years and is a much cheaper option.
Revised D-Day set for A-League expansion
Today FFA Head of A-League Greg O'Rourke admitted the expansion timetable is hanging in the balance.
But he insisted expansion WILL still go ahead...but, at the moment, no-one quite knows when.
He is set to present his team's final report on the expansion options to a board meeting on October 16 where a final decision was expected to be made on which specific bids would get the green light.
I'm not sure pro/rel in Australia is a good idea. Not convinced on playing numbers or the finances. If the USA/Canada don't have it with all their coin what makes Aus think it can have 30 stable pro clubs?
On another note I'd love to see an Island team based in Fiji or New Caledonia playing home games in PNG/Tahiti/Fiji/New Cal and the Solomons. I generally think there's enough talent across those islands to have a strong team capable or winning the toilet seat. Fan numbers won't be an issue.
It could be run by OFC initially and would show Australia keeping it's word to Oceania when it was given permission to leave.
If I was going to vote for someone to run an independant A League, I would nominate and vote for Tony Pignata. Football man, excellent administrator and does well, where ever he goes.
How FFA congress overhaul will effect A-League expansion Not so interesting
Dominic Bossi: “It certainly could. There are a few board members, that I’ve been informed of, that are questioning whether they now have the responsibility or the duty to proceed with expansion on the present timeline.
WOULD-BE A-League bidders remain in the dark over the future of expansion, with Football Federation Australia’s board certain to put off a decision next week. With several members of the FFA board expected to stand down next month after major changes to the governance of the sport were finally passed, it’s being seen as inconceivable that they could make a decision on which teams will join the competition, and when. With a new A-League working group in place to design a new model for the competition by the end of March, it’s increasingly seen as being likely that the choice of new teams will be delayed until the new year
South Melbourne taking a beating over wages
Not what FFA wants to hear this close to bid day or is it exactly what they want
Western Melbourne Group awaits the decision on expansion at this weeks FFA Board meeting. Our bid team has invested huge resources in compiling our bid and with support from Probuild Australia, Populous, Wyndham City Council and many more people and firms #growourgame

Our bid along with 7 other bid teams now urge FFA to stick to their own deadlines for expansion (31 October 2018). Be courageous, our game needs to grow and grow now #growourgame

Apparently FFA board split. No expansion at this stage and decision to be left to new board.

Don't know if this is a good thing or bad thing?. We could use more teams to make the A-League no so stale.

Definitely a good thing. Existing lame duck FFA board have no moral right to be making this decision.
Are Welnix all for expansion? Because I think a few clubs are against it.

I agree, it's we'll stale. Even Scotland who likewise has a small number of teams at least rotates the sides through promotion.
