Avon Park is a lovely riverside setting for a cup tie. Seriously though it would be great to play it at Cuthbert's Green to attract the juniors from the morning games and other teams playing in the afternoon to the match. Clubrooms afterwards will be jam packed - should be a cracker. I wonder if Cashmere's Hamblett will be available - she's off to Mississippi State University.

Positives for WMPL have to be how Tasman and Waimak (generally) have gone. Yes Waimak have shipped 20 goals twice now, but they have competed against the other sides. One could point then at the level of the other sides but at this rate unless both Tasman and Waimak hold onto their very young teams and bring them through over the next 5 years AT LEAST, then no one will ever compete with Tech or Coastal. However looking at the table it isn't a great look that the team in 4th has a minus 63 goal difference.

Cashmere and Coastal are in a class of their own at the moment, and are really only pushing each other.  The need to play in a higher league (Unfortunately that isn't available in Mainland at the moment)  The rest of the WPL teams are very competitive with each other and are more in a development stage.  Tasman and Waimak should be really proud of their standings over the other current teams - Uni will always have a semi fluctuating team, FC will be looking hard given the results and their goals.

Introducing Halswell (Who have been in a development stage for a few years rebuilding) and Selwyn (also now forced into a rebuilding stage) will be good additions to WPL once they are ready.  But for Cashmere and Coastal what do you do to keep those players interested - surely walking into games knowing you're going to smash the opposition (Apart from each other) is hard work for them as well.

(PS Waimak Keeper must be a demon at shot stopping now)

It is because of this that there needs to be some creative thinking; otherwise the more ambitious and talented will have little option but to head to Auckland; which I think you will find that will happen sooner rather than later; and then bring Coastal (particularly) back to the field a little.

I said it in my round review on May 1, and I'll be saying it again in tonight's review - you need a South Island Premier Women's League.

In Dunedin, it's a five-team comp - Dunedin Technical, Otago University, Roslyn Wakari, Dunedin Tech Reserves, Varsity Reserves.

In other words, two teams are in there just to make up the numbers.

I don't care how they go about it, but for the good of women's football, Mainland Football and Football South need to pool their resources and introduce a SI PWL sharpish, comprising Dunedin Technical, Otago University, Roslyn Wakari, Cashmere Technical, Coastal Spirit and Tasman United, who are proving quite competitive in their maiden MPWL campaign.

While that's running, the MPWL can continue with Canty Univs, FC, Halswell, Parklands, Waimak, Western and the reserve teams of Cashmere and Coastal. The winner of that comp (or, if one of the reserve teams wins it, the best-placed first team) plays the winner of the FS PWL at season's end, with the winner of that play-off taking on the bottom-placed team in the SI PWL in a promotion-relegation play-off.

No ifs, buts or maybes. Something along the lines of the above has to happen. Preferably yesterday. How it's funded is up to the federations - as noted above, they need to pool their resources and do something to grow the women's game. If they want to run an equivalent comp for their men's teams at the same time, fine - as an aside, that's something which should have happened a few years back, not to put too fine a point on it.

But the priority has to be the introduction of a South Island Premier Women's League. Otherwise you'll be seeing more of these sorts of scorelines. And I think it's safe to say we don't want that.

Cheers,

JR

yes lets widen the gap even further. Those good young players coming thru at fctwenty and Waimak can go and play for cash tech and make the league below even weaker!!

I would suggest FC, Waimak, Tasman with their young players coming thru are on the brink of developing competitive teams. Why ruin that? As I understand it FC have a terrific 15th grade team (seniors next season?) and Waimak have another crop on the brink.  Clearly the best players are drawn to the highest league. Create a higher league and suddenly you destroy all the work those clubs have done to become competitive in the league.
