To be honest, I have never heard of Bob Mould but if his book has stories about rock and roll excesses that I can steal and pass off as my own (in order to make people feel their lives are inferior to mine due to the country that they live in) I will give it a go.
If you are going to pass Bob Mould's tales of rock and roll excesses off as your own then that's going to involve at least one major surprise for all of us.

Honestly Frankie, if you are already a fan of The Hold Steady you will probably enjoy a lot of Bob Mould's work with Sugar and as a solo artist. Maybe even latter day Husker Du.
Check out Workbook (1989), s/t (1996) or even District Line (2008).
And of course, Sugar's Copper Blue album (1992) is the one that is very highly regarded by a select few self-appointed music nazis on here.
I haven't read Bob Mould's book but I've got Morrissey's autobiography sitting there on the 'to read' pile. Recently finished Simon Reynold's Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978-1984, which is very good and got me listening to a bunch of bands I've never heard before. New ipod Top 5 postpunk playlist:

Husker Du = one of my top 10 all time. What a band. Got into them listening to Candy Apple Grey, got a real thing for that album even though it appears it was one of their least critically acclaimed... now collected most of em and they just got better with every listen.
Zen Arcade = amazing.
I have Copper Blue but only gave it a couple of listens and never 'got it' as much as others. Upon reading some comments here I think I'm going to re-visit.
Vaguely on that note, anyone listen to Afghan Whigs before? Read a bit about em and got an album (Gentlemen) that seems interesting and a wee bit before it's time.
Other recent music 'discoveries' of mine...
Never got the R.E.M. thing before but recently did a bit of research and got some of their early stuff - Murmur, Fables of the Reconstruction, and wow, really good sh*t. Then picked up some of the later stuff and was very surprised by "Up".
Reminds me of how I feel about Springsteen a bit - always thought it was a load of crap not worth my time but if you delve deeper, turns out there are some real gems hidden in their discographies e.g. Springsteen's Nebraska
Nebraska, The River, The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle were all good albums.
I am getting prepared for their gig in Auckland next month by listening to 'Box Frenzy' and 'Cure For Sanity' by PWEI
I thought everybody on here would be familiarising themselves with the Topp Twinns greatest hits.

Today. I am going to do 45 mins on the bike. Maybe some weights - dunno sore shoulder still. Getting a haircut, buying a replacement bowel for the food processor. Buying a pair of track pants. Having a few sadly non-alcohol drinks with work mates then home to cook tea - fascinating.

FM for awhile would constantly post what gigs he was going to which I sort of found annoying as it used to scan like some girl's facebook page. He then uses 75% of his comments on here to remind me of my post when I had a go at him. To be fair my post was a mess and I just should have said stop being such an attention grabbing big girl Frankie. But there you go.
I hope you enjoy the gigs. I don't so much these days but I loved live music when I was younger. If it was a football, getting laid or a gig - I'd usually pick a gig, (getting laid didn't come up to often though). Deafness though and the use of cameras on phones has dimmed the gig experience.
Still stand by my views on St Vincent that recent stuff with David Bryne produced some of the most obnoxiously smug interviews I've ever heard. Not unheard from Bryne but he can be forgiven. I find a lot of her music gets pretty tedious after the 3rd listen.

Afghan Whigs are an excellent band.
Got a new album out which is very good, and the entire back catalogue is worth investigation too. 'Gentleman' is outstanding. Greg Dulli's other outings as The Twilight Singers and The Gutter Twins (with Mark Lanegan) also worth checking out.

I really hate the use of cameras and phones at concerts, I know people love bands and want some way of keeping a semi-permanent memento, but for some reason a really shitty quality POV clip that you'll never watch. I don't mind people taking a few photos, preferably when the act is interacting with the crowd. I agree, camera phones have concerts worse.

My bucket list for if I ever win lotto is to go to New Orleans and check as much blues music as I can, some jazz and then follow the trail all the way up to Chicago listening to various blues types. Memphis, Detroit etc. Enjoy your trip, I am jealous.
Ps, I dont mind the music itineries, some of the various tastes on here areso far from the alleged top 40, it is giving me faith that fans haven't completely sold out to "The Man".

Get the the re-release of Copper Blue as it has a few extra tracks.
We saw Nic Cave the last time he played in Welly and I was pretty surprised what a driven maniac he was on stage. We had tickets to see him in scotland years ago but we sold them as we were too skint to travel at the time.
Will deffo go and see him again, one of the few I would go and see.
