Re the train clips. They call it Slow TV I believe. I watched way more of LG's post than I should have.
Faster 'slow clip' is this that runs for 32'. Passes my friends' place.

Was quite a big day, we left Christchurch at 4am, got to Arthurs Pass around 6.30, then climbed Mt Philistine (1967m) which isn't too bad but there are some quite steep bluffs you have to get up. Then once on the summit we follwed the ridge along until it hit Mt Rolleston.

Quite a long ridge to traverse it must be said and there were a few obstacles that we had to climb around. When we got the col between Philistine and Rolleston my mate had a snooze for about an hour as he was hungover(!!?) then we set off up the steepest section: straight up a rock buttress to the High Peak of Mt Rolleston.
This is where the fun really started as it was super steep and a lot of exposure, At one point we had to climb a section that had a 500m drop below us, nothing to stop you if you fell. Got the blood pumping I tell you!
After a fair bit of steep climbing we got to the summit, had a rest and then had to downclimb by going along the ridge from High peak to Middle Peak and then onto low peak. Right next to the Crow Glacier which is pretty awesome. By now the cloud had come in and visibility was real poor but we got down off low peak and back into the valley.
The whole trip took 12 hours of hiking and climbing but was very rewarding!
I'll dig out some more pix
Here are some pics in chronological order:
After summiting Mt Philistine we are now on the ridge heading to Mt Rolleston in the distance
Thats the face of Mt Rolleston we have to climb as seen from the Philistine Ridge. We went straight up the prominent rock buttress you can see centre left on face.
My mate scoping the scenery out....
Time for a snooze before we attempt the rock buttress
This was the trickiest section! Huge drop off below us as we went up here.
Onwards!
Looking up at the last section we have to climb to get to the summit. Was quite steep(!) but the rock was awesome
climbing the last steep section. don't look down haha
cloud starting to roll in as we reach the top
Cyril on the summit of the High Peak of Mt Rolleston (2275m). we are buggered so had another snooze here. There's actually a Motorhead badge buried under a rock at the summit of Mt Rolleston. I put it up there when Lemmy died as my tribute to him. Its still there. Motorhead rule.
Heading down from High Peak towards middle peak. Thats the crow glacier and low peak in the middle
coming down from Low Peak towards Goldney Ridge
After 12 hours we are back on flat ground again
Fabulous. Thanks that's made my day.
Daughter, aged 5, is fascinated.

You look just like Sir Ed...
Not first to the summit!
That's cyril, I was the mug hanging off the mountain holding the camera :D
EXCELLENT!!!
My morning was a bit less strenuous
I had you down as someone who might spend an unreasonable amountof time decorating their toenails...
An extra hour of sleep
This view on the way back from Baring Head yesterday. ( unseen is the strong wind that knackered us. )
Winning a test series against England.
that was bloody awesome from sodhi and Wagner (best safa migrant of all time)

I had another mountain adventure on Mt Rolleston this weekend. Quite shocked at the state of the Glaciers though: they are vanishing at an alarming rate this summer!
This is the Crow Glacier and its looking manky as. Thats Mt Murchison in he background and my mate tried to climb it in the weekend but the glacier was impassible.
Here's my Motorhead Badge that lives on the top of Mt Rolleston. RIP Lemmy!
Liking the placing of that badge.
What a view. Being at a place like that make one feel great that they are alive.

I find climbing up on a mountain really helps get ones life back into perspective: you really realise just how insignificant you are in the grand scheme of things and how fragile life is itself. I start to appreciate the small things in life that we often take for granted and come back down feeling really refreshed.
Bit like looking up into the starry sky at night and having a "wow" moment or three: I highly recommend it. Like tonights sunset was stunning down here in chch.
Take time to smell the roses I say
Yes, yes, yes.
Especially to the latter part of first sentence.

Ditto this, but Photography is my Climbing!

Shamelessly jumping on the bandwagon. (I sort of have to working as a bartender in South Auckland!) May even go to a game next time I have work off.
Had another fun/crazy mountain trip yesterday. This time we climbed Mt Williams via The Spike in Arthurs Pass; a very steep route over incredibly crumbly rock.
We had to cross rivers and bush bash to get up onto the ridge then went up the spike before having to negotiate some really dodgy steep rock on Mt Willams. A grade 2 climb for sure.
Was very happy to get to the summit as have been wanting to do this one for a while.
The Spike seen as we exit the bush (right of center) with Mt Willams lurking behind it:
Heading up Mt Williams on steep, loose rock:
Just below the Summit:
Resting on the summit, feeling very happy to be back on solid rock again!
Bashing our way down to the Mingha River so we can walk out:
After 2 hours of bush bashing we finally hit the Mingha
Last river crossing as we head back to the car. Thats the Spike and M t Williams center right of the picture and you seen see the bushy ridge we had to climb up to reach the rock.
How long did it take you?
( Wonders whether fitness would be up to that sort of trip? )

Took 4 hours of bush bashing & climbing to get to the top: quite hard going tbh
And four hours to walk out a different route, so 8 hours all up!
Do you have anywhere in mind where you want to go?
I want to check out the Taraua's some time, never been there
Last day of work for 3 weeks today, getting married next Saturday and then off work during all of the CL semi-finals! Lovely stuff.

Congratulations!
Edit: on the wedding, not on the time off and getting to watch the Champions League
Sitting in front of the TV watching Champions league semifinals is an ideal honeymoon though. So congrats on that.
And congrats on the wedding too I guess.
Inspiring photos ChCh Rangers.
Had another bonza day in the mountains the other day. The previous week there had been a big dumping of snow but thanks to global warming(!) and the heatwave that came after the snow, there was hardly any snow left by the time we got up there, but it was still very icy and you had to be careful.
So anyhow we bagged 3 peaks in one day: Mt Blimit, Mt Temple and Phipps peak. They are all on the same ridge and all in the 1950m mark approx.
Three of us went: a Walsall fan, a gooner and me :D First time ever that Walsall had the chance to be above Arsenal hahaha
Frozen tarn below summit of Mt Blimit. Gooner on thin ice:
On the ridge between Blimit and Temple. Walsall wearing yellow gloves being followed by gooner:
Looking back along the ridge we just traveled. Thats Mt Blimit top center. Gooner can be seen lurking below me on the ridge looking for a new manager I assume. god knows where Walsall has got too.Div 4?!
There's Mt Rolleston the peak I climbed the other week. Went up via the ridge line on the right that goes straight up to the summit:
Can you spot the gooner as he traverses the narrow ridge between Mt Temple and Phipps Peak? Grade two climb this part. squeaky bum time if you don't like heights:
Walsall just below the summit of Phipps. Snow very icy here:
The guys on the summit of Phipps (1965m). Rolleston behind them
Down climbing Phipps: Gooner takes the lead, Walsall stands there looking. just as it is in the football league I guess:
Tricky gendarme on the ridge we have to climb around. Walsall not happy!
Just past the gendarme, the wall of rock behind us:
Looking back at the ridge we have just come down from the summit of Phipps:
Walsall slipping on ice as he heads down off the ridge and into temple basin. Walsall not happy about ice, neither was gooner, but there you go, we had an awesome day.
Good thing about being the photographer is there's no pics of all the falls I had but trust me I had some beauties!
Listening to Mr Blue Sky by ELO whilst on a plane taking off through turbulance from Sydney over the weekend!
Took my mind well away from the bumpy ride for a little over 5mins ?
A very big shout out to Phoenix Fan Tv on youtube. Please encourage this young fan.
