Qualification for European competitions[
edit]
Qualification for European competitions is as follows:
champions qualify for the group stage of the Champions League, runners-up qualify for the second qualifying round of the Champions League, third place qualifies for the third qualifying round of the Europa League, and fourth place qualifies for the second qualifying round of the same competition.
A fifth spot is given to the winner of the Turkish Cup, who qualify for the play-off round of the Europa League. If the Turkish Cup winner has already qualified for European competition through their league finish, the next highest placed club in the league takes their place.
Interesting trivia on the Turkish League
A total of 68 clubs have competed in the Süper Lig, but only six have won the title to date: Galatasaray (22), Fenerbahçe (19), Beşiktaş (15), Trabzonspor (6), Bursaspor (1) and İstanbul Başakşehir (1).
So this season was one of those rare occasions, when league was not won by any of the Big 3 clubs. İstanbul Başakşehir as first time champions, and Trabzonspor (who haven't won title since 1984) were 2nd. Of Big 3, only Beşiktaş finished in the top 5.
Was in Turkey in 1998. We came off a 3 day cruise around the Aegean into the coastal tourist town Fethiye. That day it was confirmed Galatasaray had pipped Fenerbahçe to win the title. Lots of car tooting and waving of yellow-red flags. Some of our crew were Galatasaray fans, including this tiny 5 foot guy (with a lifetime of dentist avoidance), that later that evening we found we could easily lift above our heads up towards the swirling disco ball/ceiling fan. He was one happy chappy. Come May in Turkey she's pretty hot. A big boozy shirts off evening, culminating in a group skinny dip in the Aegean. Ah the memories. Colonel Malone would have been turning in his Dardenelles grave.
