Ilistened to him last night. Talked about why so many fail when they heard overseas. Described it as you can't be prepared for how hard it is to make it in a good European league. When he moved, he was just not ready mentally and physically for the 1st Div in Portugal, he was at first disappointed to drop down to 2 div, but quickly understood why- you're playing with people who will climb over your dead body to make it, a culture that we lack here. My read is he sees international football as a distraction at this phase of his career. He was unwilling to comment about it last night when asked.

Vitoria have just let their best winger (Raphinha) go to Sporting Lisbon. With their other starting winger Heldon only being a loanee, Vitoria only have one or two wingers that would be league quality. Added to that a new manager's just come in, a perfect opportunity for Boyd to step in!

A poor man’s Steve Adams. And yes can understand that logic to a point - he probably only gets one crack at making it over there.

At least sounds like he’s not holding out for a Team USA call up.

If everyone took Boyd's attitude, our national team would be terrible. What if Winston Reid refused to play for us because he wanted to focus on moving to a bigger club? Players should be given freedom and there is no point picking them for every window. However, Boyd shouldn't be able to just waltz into the team if he finds it convenient for him in the future.

not wanting to point out the obvious, but our national team is terrible. Let me out this another way, why should Boyd risk his future career such that's a private business  can benefit, playing the shark brand of football nzf churn out?

Playing the way we did under Hudson harms careers/recruitment

I believe that when Boyd gets to a level where he is satisfied in himself and what he can offer the team then he will say yes. We all say that he has plenty to offer the All Whites but possibly in his mind he is not the finished product yet. Not football related but Brad Thorn turned down an All Black call up because he didn't believe he was prepared for that level and fair enough. Until this guy declares for another country I'm happy to wait it out until he makes it near the top level of Europe.

So very true at the Nix in the past. No competition for places and most of the team was an automatic selection and the players got too complacent because they knew they were not under threat in their positions.

That just seems to be typical for a salary-capped league, look at how often Sydney played the same starting eleven. Sure you can try and talk yourself into believing that there is competition for places, but the reality is you generally know who the squad-fillers and development kids are in every club.

He may not had the best exit at the Phoenix, but he was there 3years as a pro and this must add to something to his skills. But this video  sounds all Edge, parents and himself, maybe the editing. Phoenix only adversity to made him stronger.

It seems Tyler is still at Vit Guimeries. He played the whole game against Benfica(must have been an amazing experiance) for Vit G. I thought the contract with them was until June 2018 and there are rumours that Tondela want to sign him on a longer term contract.

Anyone know what up?

It seems Tyler is highly rated in Portugal. Some of the fans on the Tondela site have posted that they think he could one day play EPL if he keeps up the progression. He is certainly in the right place.....starting Div 1 in Portugal. That league is heavily scouted. If Tyler has a top season he will almost certainly be picked up by a bigger club in Europe. You have to admire the way he has worked his arse off to get to this level.

I watched this game. Not having seen Boyd play since his Nix days I was interesting to see his progression.

To be honest I was impressed. He is a now a very good footballer. He obviously has been well coached over the last couple of years. He is one of V Guimareas better players. He took all the corners and free kicks...he has a wicked right foot. I am not saying hes the next Ronaldho but he looks completely adapted to Portugal Div 1.

Highlights were a few excellent dipping crosses from open play. He skinned his marker a couple of times(who got a yellow card for a rugby tackle on Boyd after he beat him again) He put in a glorious Beckham like 60 metre diagonal pass that had the opposite keeper in all sorts of trouble. He also banged  a couple of good shots on goal. But what I really liked was his tactical appreciation. He linked, passed and moved really well.

I have watched Rojas play a few games in Holland but Boyd is streets better. Rojas can beat a man but IMO lacks football smarts. Boyd looks the complete package...he will be transfered to a bigger club in the next couple of years for sure.

His club side though are not a good side. They are now bottom of the league with no points after three rounds. They have some good attackers but their midfield got completely outplayed in this game. The front guys lived of scraps ...which is hard for a winger like Boyd. They play their full backs really high but their tactic is for the wingers to then cut in centrally. They lacked width on attack and most of the time the fullback ended up playing a ball back to the defenders.

I would rate Reid as our best player followed by Wood......but it would be 50/50 between Boyd and Thomas. Thomas is very good but he is playing at a  lower level than Boyd(Holland is 9th???? on UEFA ranking where as Portugal is ranked 6th) Portugals top 4 teams are excellent and in the matches  I have watched their midtable teams have some very good players.

Good wrap, but is a big call to say Boyd playing at a higher level than Thomas. PSV are a biggest club in Europe, whilst I (and I suspect many others) had never heard of Vitoria until Boyd got signed. If he was at one of the bigger clubs in the Portuguese League - different story.

Anyway is really pleasing to see Boyd progress. From match highlights of some of his games with a Tondela, latter half of last season he is going really well. I’ve criticised him for being unavailable for AWs, but hopefully in this World Cup qualifying cycle he puts his hand up.

I think Guimaraes will eventually find their mojo and climb the ladder.  Irrespective of how their season goes, his move back to his parent club was a step up as Guimaraes are a bigger club than Tondela.  Hopefully he can do well and make a move to the top 2-3 clubs, like Porto etc.

Re: Holland vs Portugal, these are such subjective questions that it's almost impossible to answer.  Both leagues are pretty competitive and a great environment to be in.  In both leagues you'll find a significant drop in quality between the top 2-3 teams and the rest of the pack.

The only thing I'll say is that Thomas has been consistently one of the best MF in the league and has attracted a lot of interest from overseas, whereas Boyd looks like he's come into his own only last season or so.

In any case, I hope his progression continues and he goes on to bigger things and eventually dons the all white.

It also gets worse for Holland for the next season, they drop to the 14th for that, and Portugal remain steady at 7th.

The decline of the Dutch league has been pretty dramatic over the last 2-3 years. Ajax and PSV have a chance to make things easier if they have a decent run in Europe this year, but it seems that Dutch football overall is on a bit of a struggle street right now. I'd say that the Portuguese league is comfortably higher level right now, sides like PSV and Feyenoord, and to a lesser extent Ajax, are living off past glories.

Yeah, I read that it's between Braga, Sporting Lisbon and Guimaraes for that third champions league spot now that Sporting have lost a lot of their talent. Guimaraes definitely one of the best clubs in Portugal

They are are located in the northern region though, which is the most heavily populated in Portugal (something like 3 million), and the majority of the other clubs in the league are located in close proximity (other than the Lisbon club and a couple of others). So undoubtedly that helps their average too.

They averaged 16,000 last season, best out of all the clubs outside of the big three, which is still pretty impressive.

Don’t think that football attendance figure is right. According to Soccerway their home crowds are usually a few thousand, for example in weekend home crowd was just under 2,000.

The big 4 clubs get massive crowds, compared to rest of the teams in Portugal - though I think Vitoria’s Stadium has capacity for 30,000
