Do you expect journalists to always name their sources..?
It's not like the happenings of the All Whites are a closely guarded secret; it's not surprising this sort of thing would come out.

Pretty sure the phrase "understands" is code for being told something off the record.
I agree with NP - at the moment it's all hearsay. I want to hear it from Boyd himself or from Schmid/a NZF representative.
Very disappointed if true. Boyd isn't in a position to be picky as far as I'm concerned. If he wants to be involved, he needs to still 'plead his case' and show what he can do. Now, not at the OFC nations cup or even later down the track.

Full shift for Boyd in Tondela's 2-0 victory over Chavez (you'd be forgiven for thinking they were playing Perth Glory, looking at their strip!).
Highlights - Boyd appeared to have a blinder, hitting the post midway through the first half and having a hand in both goals.
First he heads the ball to a team mate, whose resulting cross is headed into the net. Then in the last minute of play, he bulldozes through the opposition defense and selfishly assists a team mate for the easiest of tap-ins.
Having been quite harsh further up the thread, I'm considering a contra. Surely it would be better for the AWs for him to get established at his club- he seems to have been starting recently?- and improve, and then join the team as a player with a more stable career later in the WC cycle?
Not that there is any indication that that is going to happen.

yes but that's only if he does want to play for the All Whites down the line. Nothing to suggest that's the case yet.
Nothing to suggest the opposite either. We haven't heard what he said from any official source yet.
Wants to focus on his club career, for now.
Those highlights are great- that goal keeper for Tondela had an amazing game! And lol at the defender who just fell over and then tried to have the goal disallowed.

For sure, that's Claudio Ramos - one of the best goalkeepers in the league and pushing for an international callup :)
One thing I noticed is that instead of congratulating or celebrating the goal with Boyd, they all went to the striker who scored the tap-in instead - wonder if he's well liked in the squad or his attitude is shining through?

What would you need to see in the story before you were convinced?
With his US heritage, I wonder if any MLS team is keeping tabs on him? I'm sure Hudson will know about it.

I noticed that as well, but actually thought it was poor form on the striker's part. He was gifted a goal by Boyd, who could've tried to score himself, he could've at least given him a high five. This is pretty standard though, not sure it says anything about his attitude.
Presuming that Boyd is not named in AWs squad for Canada game, could a NZ reporter post squad announcement ring Boyd and actually just ask him his reasons for being unavailable? Seems a pretty simple idea. Andrew V?
Be good to put the conjecture/gossip to bed.
Steve Adams has been pretty open about being unavailable for the Tall Blacks, to concentrate on his career at Minnesota. Not saying Boyd is anywhere near the Adams importance level, but be good the know the facts/his reasoning!
how many in crowd?

Very different situations, Adams playing in the best league in the world, while Boyd is playing for a weakish side in an OK European league. Still miles above many of his peers, but a bit of a stretch IMO. I guess he's on loan to Tondela, so he'd want to do really well and be brought back by Guimaraes next season, so that he might be closer to the top of the table and getting a chance at some European games as well.
I'm torn. I also question the appeal of a match behind closed doors. But I've said it before, I think he should go and claim a spot in the team.

Oops yes Oklahoma. And yes the 2 individuals are quantum miles apart in profile, earnings, national team importance etc etc etc - but at least with Adams know what is going on (which I guess is part of having a much higher profile). Just be good to know Boyd’s reasoning if he is unavailable for the national team.

I'd love to ring him. Get me his number (or his email) and I'll do it.

Rob Pickstock at NZF (AWs manager) should be able to help you with that.

You can ask Andrew Gourdie maybe? Didn't he ring Winston Reid when it became apparent he could have switched to NZ?

I know exactly what it is - it's a pretty simple story. I'm really not sure what else you want to see in it. I'd love to have a bunch of quotes in there from both parties, but getting those is not as easy as just picking up the phone, and not having them doesn't take away from the news - he's unavailable for the All Whites, he's focusing on his club career, the door's not shut to him, he hasn't shut the door either. Perhaps you have some reason not to trust the journalists who have reported it, in which case, that's your prerogative, and I'm sorry you feel that way.
Your response Andrew only confirms in my mind and probably many other older heads that the standard of journalism has slipped over the years and there is probably no way back. Here we have a young journalist [you] seeing nothing wrong with how the story was written. I wouldn't mind betting that the likes of Terry McLean or Roy Williams would never write a flimsy story like that. Luckily there are still journalists around that still have the skills and ethos of yesteryear, that gives us hope. I'm generalising but there are too many young journos just playing at being a reporter - no substance to their work. Again a generalisation but you're unlikely to find such a story written by the mainstream rugby media in this country - their readership wouldn't accept it.

Would be great if you could actually offer a critique of the substance of the stories (Michael's and/or mine) instead of generalising, as you say, about kids these days.

Here you go Andrew, a couple of articles of yours I've just read:
Anthony Hudson knows what he is in for if he continues to coach the All Whites
A good, well-constructed piece. An enjoyable and factual read. A good balance of confirmable fact, direct quote and background. Well done.
A place at the World Cup means so much more to Peru than it does to New Zealand
Again, I enjoyed the article. A good bit of observational and colour commentary.
Tyler Boyd unavailable for the All Whites as he focuses on his club career in Portugal
“With four years between the Canada match and the intercontinental playoff for a place at the 2022 World Cup, the door won't be closed on a return for Boyd should he change his mind between now and then”
The article is not subtitled as an opinion piece and this is simply a statement and nowhere in the story does it provide any evidence to support the assertion.
“One player out of the picture under Hudson who is set to come back into consideration is goalkeeper Jake Gleeson, who currently plays for Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer in the United States.”
Similar to the first quote.
Overall the article reads well and is an easy and interesting read. The 2 criticisms are not fatal but you did ask for feedback. In comparison to the original article that started this conversation – that and this article are chalk and cheese. The original started with an unsourced claim and went off on a ramble based on that. Yours added so much more and actually offered information that invited the reader to make an assessment on whether or not your story had credence because you provided some credible additional commentary.
I haven’t bothered looking for anymore but my honest assessment of you as a journalist after reading these few articles is that you are a good one. Please don’t compromise your integrity by resorting to writing that type of lazy garbage.

It must be hard to be so miserable all of the time
still, better than fighting over which mass produced beer makes you tougher or which one containing mango, honey and kimchi makes what you say invalid!
Andrew V did ask for some feedback!
I remember Hudson saying he was sick of being asked about Boyd, so again would be useful to hear from young Tyler himself.
In mean time I guess we just assume he is unavailable now, but in future may become available when it suits him.
