Does he get to hold up a Forest or Olympiakos scarf?

It will be a tougher challenge than Red Star, to crack the starting team at Olympiakos. Large squad with a heap of Portuguese midfielders, experienced 63 yr old Spanish coach. They won a European title last season, so have some quality for sure.

All Whites midfielder Marko Stamenic has joined national team captain Chris Wood at the English Premier League club after completing a $9.6 million move from Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade.

However, New Zealand football followers may have to wait to see Wood and Stamenic line up together in the Premier League as Forest will immediately send the 22-year-old on loan to Greek club Olympiacos to continue his development.

Both clubs are owned by Greek billionaire Evangelos Marinakis.

The move makes Stamenic the second most expensive New Zealand footballer behind Wood, who joined Newcastle United in a deal worth a reported $50 million in 2022.

Wood has been sold for more than $10 million on at least three occasions throughout his career.

Like many on here, as a long suffering fan and supporter of NZ football it is so good to see NZ's progression as a footballing country.

It's a shame Forest's financial situation means they need to get him off the books immediately. If it weren't for that you'd suspect he'd at least get a few weeks of pre-season before they send him away for the year.

I get that. But all that aside, to be honest this is great news for New Zealand Football - 3 All Whites on the books of Premier League clubs! Even our much bigger neighbours to the East must be glancing over at little old New Zealand with a tinge of envy at such news.

Great for the profile of the game here as well, and excellent for Olé with the payment they'll receive out of the sale. Smash it Marko!👏👏👏

Loan deal to Olympiacos confirmed by the Greek outfit for this season as well.

Updated for $9.6 million.

5% of the transfer fee (as the solidarity/training payment paid to all clubs between 12-23) from $9,600,000 NZD is $480,000.

$43,636 per year, and he was there from 2014-2020 (roughly - I haven't got exact timelines).

$305,000 + change roughly.

Good question, not entirely sure on that one to be honest. Will get back to you, although I'm pretty sure it's only for the actual transfer fee. 

Will see what else I can unearth on my travels, but after my Saturday plans. 😃

0.25% of the transfer fee for every year he was registered between 12-15 and 0.5% for every year between 16 and 23.

So about 2% or 2.5% of the total fee. NZF might take a slice of it tho.

...he’s being loaned to Olympiacos for year one of that contract, which is a matter of convenience since Nottm Forest and Olympiacos are both owned by Greek businessman Evangelos Marinakis (Rio Ave in Portugal are also part of the group – a club that coincidentally had Nando Pijnaker on its books for a while there).

This has been a common strategy for Forest. Last season Omar Richards, Giulian Biancone, and Gustavo Scarpa were all on loan at O from NF, although there’s scepticism as to how successful the strategy has been for getting into the Nottm Forest first team long term. The club’s been in a weird place with promotion and financial dramas and trying to stay in the Prem though, so the precedents may not have much relevance.

Next season will be the centenary for Olympiacos Football Club. Their 99th campaign was a disappointment on the domestic front as they only finished third in the league, six points behind winners PAOK, and were bounced in the round of sixteen of the Greek Cup. However they balanced that out with a brilliant run through the Europa Conference League knockouts, beating Ferencváros (2-0 agg), Maccabi Tel Aviv (7-5 agg), Fenerbahçe (3-3 agg, 3-2 on pens), Aston Villa (6-2 agg), and Fiorentina (1-0 aet) to lift the trophy. They also won the UEFA Youth League title.

This season they’ll have automatic Europa League league phase entry (it’s a new format with the league phase replacing the group stage... teams playing eight games prior to knockouts instead of six). They’ll expect to be challenging for trophies on the domestic front too so it’s not out of the question that Stamenic could make it three consecutive league and cup doubles in three different countries. Imagine that.

No Champions League appearances will be added to his resume whilst in Greece but the Europa League will do fine in its place. Greece is ranked slightly higher than Serbia on the UEFA coefficients, having nudged ahead on the latest updates (15th vs 19th) thanks largely to Red Star Belgrade not delivering results on the continental front... so it’s not impossible that they drop into the Europa League after UCL qualifying and could be an opponent for Olympiacos. Right now the only other kiwi bloke in line for continental footy next season is Callum McCowatt (Silkeborg – UEL quals) but at the rate this transfer window is going that’s probably not a final count.

By the way, there have been a few trailblazing NZers who’ve played in the Greek Super League before. Kris Bright made six appearances for Panserraikos. Kosta Barbarouses got 10 for Panathanaikos. And of course NZ/Greek utility Themi Tzimopoulos spent most of his career there, making 233 combined appearances for Akratitos, Giannina, and Levadiakos. Mostly at Giannina. You’ll be interested to know that Themi was still going strong last season at 38 years of age, playing 20 games for Kozani in the second tier. Seems his contract has now wrapped up though... whether that’s the end of his career or not, we shall see.

Up Next: Olympics begin on July 24, gotta think he’ll (Stamenic) be there now that this has all been sorted

What a footballing journey he's had so far too!
 Even if his career somehow peaks here, he will have experienced two of the craziest derbies in Europe by the time he leaves. If nothing else he'll have some great anecdotes, that's for sure

First game of preseason, and Marko starts against an Ajax midfield including Jordan Henderson. Game kicking off in 5 mins

edit: they amended their starting lineup three minutes out from kickoff, removing Stamenic as a late injury scratch. Ffs

Somewhat ironically, after withholding him from the Olympics, Stamenic picked up an injury while training with Olympiacos (the one mentioned above) and has missed every single preseason match anyway

Forest won 4-3.
Wood the assist for Forest's 1st goal, and then scored the 2nd goal himself. Off at 72 mins. Hudson-Odoi, Elanga and Awoniyi (on for Wood) all with mins off the pine.

Stamenic off at 63 mins (Olympiakos losing 1-3).

Cool to have both Kiwis start.

Highlights. Almost seemed a set move for the first goal and Wood's assist, corner going to him deep in the box to head back towards goal.

Then nice skill to hook the ball in goal after a howler by the Olympiakos keeper. Good signs he started ahead of Awoniyi

From what I saw as I was dozing in and out of consciousness after 35 minutes, 

Stamenic seemed comfortable on the ball. I don’t remember any particular tackle or anything. He was the one marking Yates for the first goal. And he picked up a card for deliberately dragging a player back. 

I didn’t see much after 30 minutes as I fell back to sleep, but watched a couple of bits of the second half. Olympiacos only made 4 subs and Stamenic was the first of those at 63 minutes shortly after Forest’s 3rd.

Yeah, he wasn't particularly great and is getting a little bit of flak online for his role in the first goal (outmuscled by Yates for the header). Not very many moments on the ball at all, aside from a few nice diagonals. However it's his first game of preseason, so nobody expect much and fans aren't too worried!

Wood was lovely. Menace in the box, and a brilliantly-taken goal

Wood’s had a good preseason, but the top 10 clubs are all the best defenders from the Euros and Copa America and he hasn’t faced them. He won’t get a free head in the box like that against a tougher defense. 
So we’ll see. Plus Awoniyi got 25 minutes here and is a class striker coming back from injury.
