Cavaliers down 1-2 at the half time, their one goal came from Bell. https://twitter.com/ncaasoccer/status/1206353173931266050
Can watch second half live on Sky ESPN 2
Joe Bell (Viking FK | Norway)
3-3 at the end of normal time
And stays that way through extra time (so golden goal didn't have to be utilised). Headed for penalties now.
NCAA football has some weird rules - rolling subs, stop clock, golden goal. Very strange to watch.
Joe takes the first penalty for his team, slots it. Great pen.
Everyone got their penalties apart from Virginias last one. Finished 7-6 to Georgetown, their first National title.
Hhe really needs to start playing with and against men, instead of this hyper schoolboys stuff.

It's a good thing that's almost certainly his plan then!

Yeah, such a shame for a player to get a education and to make sure they have a back up if their football career doesn't take off or after they have finished playing. Sure looks like it has damaged Bells chances as well doesn't it? Not like he has been offered professional contracts already, played for his national team or is one of the top potential draft picks if he decides to go the MLS route. /s

Chill out mate. I’m just making the point that he has yet to put himself in a seriously challenging football environment. And it’s time.
don't see any point in going this far playing uni football if he isn't going to finish his degree
How much longer has he got?
Otherwise he should have just stayed at the nIx
Actually he could have probably fitted in a degree during their off season

He has a year of study left to complete, but the University of Virignia lets athletes return to finish their scholarship at any stage of their career. He is 99.99% turning pro now.
Given he has three clubs (well, two and the MLS draft) after his services, that he's become an All Whites starter anyway, that he's in line to potentially captain his country at an Olympics, and that he's clearly continued to develop as player, it seems to have worked well for him (*for him* being key).

Joe has shown that he is an incredible athlete and talent who has succeeded at every stage of his career. I agree, this worked for him and he has been able to not only maintain form but improve, which is a credit to his work ethic too, as well as his single minded determination. I do agree with comments on the standard of play in the US college system, and it is all power to him for his continued growth. I recall how well he was playing in the national League when he left the Phoenix, and so enjoy watching him play still.
This preview of College final on MLS Soccer website.
Joe Bell (Jr.) – Born in England and raised in New Zealand, the do-everything central midfielder has represented the latter nation at the senior international level and is said to set the example in the Cavs’ locker room with a professional’s mentality and preparation. He’s a MAC Hermann Trophy finalist and could also be a GA candidate, though his international status may give some MLS teams pause.
The MLS Superdraft is January 9th (rounds 1 & 2) and January 13th (rounds 3 & 4)
(The semi and final are the only two matches of college soccer I've ever seen, but) I'd say it looked more intense, athleticism/fitness wise, than the national league, though worse in terms of technical ability.
I'm not sure there are other players performing at a similar level that translates to international pro success that aren't on NZF's radar. Any names?
Edit: Five Kiwis made United Soccer Coaches' all-region teams: Bell, Noah Billingsley, Alex Greive, Marcel Kampman, Sebastian Schact.
Billingsley is on radar for the All Whites and OlyWhites; Greive was at an U20 camp earlier this year.
Bell and Billingsley went on to make United Soccer Coaches' all-America teams – Bell the first team, Billingsley the third team. Making that cut is probably an indication of having an international/professional future ahead moreso than making an all-region team.
Bell wins another award, hopefully maybe one or two more to come. He was listed on the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-South Region first team. This is awarded to student athletes that are Junior or above (reminder it goes freshman, sophomore, junior then senior) that has started more than 50% of games, been a significant contributor to the team and must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. https://virginiasports.com/news/2019/12/16/mens-soccer-bell-collects-scholar-all-region-honors.aspx
This means he will then be eligible for Scholar All-America Honours that will be announced Thursday our time.
That is just shows that going to Uni has been a success for him without hurting his sporting chances, considering he won ACC Midfielder of the Year, was listed as a First Team All-American and is one of three finalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy for best player in the country for which the winner will be announced 3 Jan 2020.
Edit to also add that Bell actually finished top goal scorer of the tournament with 4 goals.
All I take from this thread is that there are a lot of awards in US college soccer

You're not wrong there.
There is, Americans love their awards and part of the problem is they have things like first, second and third all American. Really it should only be first for awards, none of that takes away from some that Bell is winning though, like the academic ones showing he's doing really well studying while training and playing. Then the decent football ones like ACC, as one of the top divisions in soccer in the states, midfielder of the year and then being in the final three for the MAC player of the year. That's all divisions, all colleges.

Riiiiight, got it...
Just for you Jono, Bell was named United Soccer Coaches Scholar Player of the Year and a First Team Scholar All-American. He has a GPA 3.49
What odds for location of first pro contract?
Norway
USA
Germany
England
Other Euro

gotta be Norway right? i mean if the Dortmund links magically come to fruition, I won't complain lol
So again because America has too many awards, Bell has won the following in last couple of days
- Soccer America Player of the Year Award
- TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Year Award
Put him in a good place to be the winner of the biggest one, the MAC Hermann Trophy
Think there is a naming tomorrow (Monday US time) of list of MLS draft nominations or similar.
Be interesting to see if he is named in that.
Superdraft is 9th and 13th Jan
top 3 pick in draft... are salary pretty determined or negotiable etc if picked.
The eligible player list for the 2020 MLS SuperDraft presented by Adidas will be announced on Monday, Dec. 30, following the 2019 Adidas MLS College Showcase (Dec. 13-15) — a valuable new scouting opportunity that MLS announced this week.

Probably looking at low six figures if he ends up being a Generation Adidas player (which he should be).
Bell not among the 6 names for "Generation Adidas". A team mate at Virginia named.
All sounds a bit of a gimmick, and only US Nationals may qualify, but could also be a hint that Bell has made himself unavailable for the MLS Draft??
Who knows.
Generation adidas is a joint program between MLS and adidas which sees a handful of top collegiate underclassmen and youth national team players signed by MLS to Generation adidas contracts and made available in the SuperDraft.
Expansion clubs Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC will have the first selections at the 2020 MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas, with Miami selecting first and third, and Nashville second. The complete list of players available for selection will be available within 48 hours prior to the draft.

Maybe Uffie is signing him for the Nix!
Joe Bell is up for college soccer's most prestigious award, the HermannTrophy! The winner will be announced tonight at 7:30 EST! (Four hours from now 1.30pm) https://twitter.com/uvamensoccer/status/1213181361693044736?s=21

Prior to the winner announcement:
The TDS Mock MLS Draft has the other nominees Robbie Robinson at #1 & Dylan Nealis at #4 for the draft. Joe not mentioned in first round prediction . I've read his International status will certainly be major concern for some teams & really depends on each teams individual roster for an International space.
Interestingly the TDS Mock draft has Noah Billingsley at #15 Red Bull NY
Of course these "mock" drafts may have little value & good luck for Joe tonight,. He's had a great season on & of the field.
I'd say he isn't in them for the fact that he isn't going into the MLS. If he was the teams wouldn't be so worried about his international status and he would be number 1 if not top of the draft picks probably depending on if he won tonight and the risk of a visa spot.
Since he isn't, I think it signals what others have said that he is going someone else.

Yep sure., Do players pre-sign something with the MLS if they want to be included in the draft ?

Basically, again a very American thing but most players will state some intent to be part of the draft www.mlssoccer.com/post/2020/01/02/2020-mls-superdr...
The majority of draft prospects are NCAA college seniors who have exhausted their college eligibility. Generation adidas players and non-collegiate international players are also eligible for selection in the SuperDraft. Clubs may nominate players for the League's Draft-Eligible List, and only players from that list may be selected.
Many of the players that will be selected have participated in the MLS College Showcase, a new event that was held for the first time last Dec. 13-15.
This guy has Bell as No 1 in his Mock Draft, going to Beckham's new MLS side Inter Miami. But then goes on to say Bell probably has options in Europe, plus he turned down a Generation Adidas contract.

Neither Virginia midfielder Joe Bell or Virginia forward Daryl Dike signed their Generation Adidas offers on Monday, but if Bell or Dike joins Generation Adidas as a last minute addition, then that will probably be the top pick in the 2020 MLS Super Draft. Bell has duel citizenship in England and New Zealand since he was born in England and played High School in New Zealand. He also played soccer overseas in Germany and Ireland. There are 58 different pro teams in those four countries compared to the 26 teams in Major League Soccer. There is also the possibility that Virginia's duo comes back to school to finish what they started in 2019 when the fall arrives in 2020.The 6-0 180 lb Joe Bell can line up at left wing, right wing, attacking midfielder, defensive midfielder, left back, center back, or right back with his versatility. Basically Bell is a guy you can plug anywhere at midfielder or defense on the backline. Bell has 7 goals, 4 assists, and 18 points in 2019.
Bell is a fantastic dribbler who can recognize where teammates are with his awareness on both ends. He also mirrors players and does a great job defending. Virginia has 14 shutouts in 2019 and this is largely due to Joe Bell, his leadership, and his relentless work ethic that his teammates at Virginia admire about him.
Inter Miami C.F. already has made some moves on the backline at center back. They have a duo of Roman Torres from the Seattle Sounders MLS Cup teams and A.J. DeLagarza who played with David Beckham on the Los Angeles Galaxy before Beckham became owner of Inter Miami C.F. You also got Grant Lillard for depth at center back. Now you add Joe Bell to this group as your starting defensive midfielder to compliment those veteran center backs along with a future starting center back in Lillard.
He also has Billingsley at no 18, going to Minnesota (2nd page of the link).
Minnesota goes with the best player on the board at 18. The 6-2 180 lb Noah Billingsley helped UC Santa Barbara record 12 shutouts as a center back in 2019.
Joe didnt win the MAC Herman trophy but he's had a great season & now onto more good things for him in the future
Just blue-skying...I know it’s unlikely with Leeds chasing promotion, but I’d love to see him in an environment under Bielsa. I think he has the right sort of box to box and technical game for it. There’s the Danny Hay and Bill Tuiloma connections, English passport...
So, will he enter MLS draft? He has better name recognition etc there than UK/Europe, but has his international experience to sell too.
Of course, Vikings could be still on the cards.
I didn't realize he has dual NZ/UK citizenship.. This is huge as it opens the doors to Europe.
Sounds like he also has his head firmly screwed on his shoulders which helps too.
Good luck to him. Very keen to see what his next move will be even if it's only going back to finish his degree
