Gallop doing a press conference at 7pm, better grab the popcorn
I for one am shocked, utterly shocked, that David Gallop and FFA held a press conference that told us absolutely nothing. #Matildas

Was pretty interesting if not exactly surprising Australia crashing out of the Asian Cup. Local (Aus) media are ripping them to shreds for not having decent strikers in the squad. They already had to resort to penalties to advance against Uzbekistan, and could not score against the mighty UAE and went down to a goal due to a pisspoor backpass to the keeper being intercepted. Expected more from Arnie to be honest.
Don't think Arnie coached Degenek to make that terrible back pass.
Socceroos goal scoring problems go way back, pre Arnold.
Some stat like when Cahill & Jedinak retired, they had scored basically 50% of Australia's goals for last 10 years or something. Neither was a striker.
Robbie Kruse has 5 goals in 75 appearances. Considering he burst onto the scenes with Victory as a goal scorer, he's been disappointing, at international level.
Mat Leckie a bit better with 9 goals in 61 games.
They would love to have the Woodsman.
Surprising they did not call up Troisi or even Goodwin seeing that Mooy was injured (OK so Mooy is not a striker), but Arzani was also out.
Graham Arnold eyeing up the Hibernian job.
Next thing we know, Kevin Muscat will be coaching Socceroos.
Hyundai A-League-based players in Arnold’s squad
will miss only one round (22) as the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship
Qualifiers are being held in a FIFA window.
*One player from the 24-player squad listed below will be omitted prior to the qualifiers in Cambodia.

I know the U20 WC is on, and yes NZF are short of cash/resources - but still seems another lost opportunity for the AWs not to play Socceroos as their 2nd game in this window.
Marinovic, M Boxall, Tuiloma, Wynne, Smith, Lewis, Rufer, Ridenton, Rojas, Barba, Wood is still a very useful starting eleven.
bench - Sail, Kyle Adams, Roux, Brotherton, Payne, Mcgarry, Musa, WeeMac, de Jong, Brockie, Collier
water boys - Thomas & Reid
Being a FIFA window MLS clubs would be forced to release their NZ players. Just one game, and at the moment MLS clubs with Kiwis get a free ride re FIFA windows. They could have no real complaints.
Lewis, Rojas & Brockie have all just come off light club seasons. Of non A League guys, only Wood you could agrue needs a rest.
Being Australia, and being so long since we played them even the Woodsman I'm thinking would have been keen.
Alas. Sigh
How shark must Thomas be feeling, eh?
I see Oz paying 6.00 at TAB for the win.
Honestly think our David Williams should be there rather than those other Williams fellas (well, at least Ryan - they need more cover upfront).
And the Socceroos B team lose 1-0. By the sounds of it, no one put their hands up to replace any of the normal players.
Oz were better team throughout, created more chances. Redmayne could have perhaps done better from the deflected cross.
Yeah seems was usual complaints that they lack a proven goal scorer. Mitch Duke did hit cross bar with a header.

Wow. That is big. It will cost them a bit to attend, but in terms of testing yourself against top class opposition - priceless. Copa America is brutal, unlike Euro qualifiers, as there are very few "poor quality" teams.
Absolutely amazing. Say what you will about the Aussies but they've been doing something right ever since they joined Asia

Would they be going if they had to pay their own way? I imagine CONMEBOL will be footing the bill.
Also, there's only a handful of poor (mainly tiny) European teams, EURO and WC qualifying in Europe can be very brutal. Just ask the Dutch and the Italians, to name a couple of recent examples. And surely Copa America won't be that brutal with the Aussies and an experimental Japanese side in it...

in this year's COA, Japan just got a 4-0 spanking from Chile in Sao Paulo.
This year's other invitational team Qatar managed to hold Paraguay to a 2-2 draw.
Japan did better against Uruguay a 2-2 draw. Suarez & Cavani still up front together.
Qatar lost 1-0 to Colombia yesterday.
Okay not the Socceroos, but to wrap up the AFC invitational sides at this year's Copa America.
Qatar lose 0-2 to Messi & Co. Agüero with Argentina's 2nd.
Qatar 2 losses & a draw, and are out.
Japan play Ecuador in their final game tomorrow. Need a win to progress to the quarters.
Japan draw 1-1 with Ecuador, to finish with a loss and 2 draws.
Miss out on quarters to Paraguay (both 3rd in their pools) on GD. Heavy 4-0 loss to Chile cost them.
Socceroos chance to have a crack next year.

A 1-0 win over Jordan yesterday in Amman.
Adam Taggart with the goal.
Only game in this window.
So far 100%, with 12 points from 4 games in 2nd round of AFC WC 2022 qualifying.
Kuwait at home & Nepal away in March 2020 window.
Iran in a possible spot of bother (Iraq & Bahrain ahead of them), only 3rd in their group with 4 games left. Winners of each group, plus best 2nd placed teams go through to 3rd round.
With real sadness I have just filed an obituary of Pim Verbeek, former Socceroos coach who has died aged 63. A lovely man, warm, deeply intelligent and good company.

That is sad. Cancer.
Didn't always endear himself to some in Aussie Football.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pim_Verbeek
His poor opinion of the standard of the A-League was well known, describing the performances of locally-based players Archie Thompson and Danny Allsopp against Indonesia as "absolutely hopeless" and openly questioning the decision of Jason Culina to quit PSV Eindhoven and return home to play in Australia.[5] When asked about possible improvements for the quality of football in the A-League, he said "Do you have an hour?" and "I am just being honest."[5]
Wow he was their head coach not long ago.
He wasn't overly popular from memory but it's always sad when someone passes away so young.
My mother in law passed away at 65 - just as she started getting her pension. It sucks when you've been working for a lifetime and go just before you get to enjoy your retirement!!

My grandfather on my mum's side was dead a year after retirement. Hugely motivated my uncle (mum's younger brother) to invest hard to be an early retiree. He's then become a bit of a mentor for me to try the same.
Anyway back to Verbeek, yeah he wasn't overly popular in Australian football circles, for dissing the A League constantly ("watching a training session at a top league Euro club, is more valuable than watching an A League game for judging a player") and was also seen as having the Socceroos play in a conservative/'un Australian' way.
Trigger for then having Ange Pot, who thought very differently, picked as next Socceroos coach
For want of any other place to put this, I see a big game in Japanese football this weekend.
Last round of J1 League.
Ange Postecoglou's Yokohama F Marinos (1st, 67 pts & GD +27) host 2nd placed Tokyo (64 pts & GD +20).
So would take an almighty choke by Marinos to not be crowned champions. On a 6 game winning streak, over a pressurised end to the season.
Think I read somewhere that Marinos compared to some of the other J1 clubs, have a sufficiently lower budget.
Finished 12th in his first season (2018) in charge.
Impressive club coaching record Postecoglou, surely up with the best to ever come out of Aussie.
We are going to Argentina!
