They announced that 100,000 tickets have been sold Thursday last week, five weeks out from the tournament.
52 games = about 2000 per game on average (of course, bigger numbers for the later rounds and the Final)
I'm betting they'll sell at least another 200,000 before the tournament.
Most people leave it late to buy tickets or will just buy them on match day.
Some idea of potential crouds can be got from figures for the 1999 u-17 tournament - and then add a lot more because it'll be a more popular tournament at u-20 level, plus football has grown in NZ since 1999 and only four cities hosted games in 1999.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_FIFA_U-17_World_...
Based on those stats, I think one or two of NZ's group games could sell out this time (if they pulled 14,103 to a game at u-17 level)
The 1999 tournament sold 216,853 tickets in total. There were only 32 games (52 this time). You'd expect a lot more spectators this time around. I'm guessing maybe twice as many?
Biggest crouds for group games 1999:
Auckland: 14,103
Napier: 5200
Christchurch: 6500
Dunedin: 5173
There were no round of 16 games
Quarter-finals: biggest croud: 7483 (Auckland)
Semis: 12,451 in Auckland
Third/ fourth play-off: 15,675
Final: 22,859
Grabone offering $19 tickets for Category C. So I try grab a couple and this happens...
No thanks.
They were selling $10 tickets at Otago Uni yesterday.
Well if they play more ads on free to air TV then yeah they'll get more people to the games.
Wgtn venue packs arrived a couole of weeks ago; rang Ticketek around the 21st, as I thought they should have been sent on 1st. Was told they'd gone in post the day before, and they showed up just before ANZAC weekend

The Grab One promo is just to promote the tournament to people who might not otherwise know about it.
The prices advertised on Grab One are exactly the same as the prices from Ticketek (who handle the bookings - but ALL online bookings from Ticketek or Grab One are done on the FIFA website. (Your screenshot above is the FIFA ticketing website you were redirected to from Grab One)
Try going directly to the FIFA website to buy your tickets at the same price as the Grab One website :

If you have any problems just phone Ticketek at 0800 TICKETEK and book on the phone.
I booked all my tickets on the phone because I'm going with a friend in a wheelchair and we couldn't book online.
The NZ vs USA game at North Harbour seems a little overpriced (haven't checked prices for other games but assume they are similar) - they should at least change some of the Cat A seating into Cat B.. Cat A which is pretty much everywhere in the stadium that isn't shark is $40. I'm willing to pay it but the friends I've asked so far were somewhat keen until I mentioned the $40 price. It seems silly to charge $40 for non shark seats when It's a weeknight game and I'm guessing most of the stadium will be empty. Jesus, even my friend who I dragged along to almost every Kingz/Knights game wasn't keen at paying $40.
I don't know what it's like in other parts of the country but I've seen ZERO advertising in Auckland so far, and not heard a single person mention the games (admittedly not many of my friends like football)..
My prediction is the crouds will actually be much worse than the U17's, which actually had quite a lot of build up and media coverage.
That U17 Womans World Cup was excellent. Some of the football being played was massively skillfull and better than EPL imho.

I actually meant the u17 mens in 1999. Wow...I only just realized how old I am, that was 16 years ago... where the hell did that time go.

If NZ vs. USA in 1999 at u-17 level attracted 14,103 spectators in Auckland, I'm banking on more than that at u-20 level.
There's been daily TV ads on both free-to-air and Sky channels for some weeks now.
Here in Christchurch, ads for the tournament are all over the buses and I've seen a few billboards.
Regular ads in the Press newspaper too.
Prince Harry is taking part in a promotion in Auckland on Saturday:
https://m.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/news/article.cfm...
Saturday May 16:
Join footballers at a FIFA Under-20 event at the Cloud on Auckland's waterfront before heading to the Millennium Institute of Sport. Fly out later that evening.
"On the last day of his trip the Prince will join footballers at a Fifa U-20 World Cup promotion in Auckland.
Dave Beeche, who heads the U-20s organising committee, said Prince Harry's involvement shortly before the tournament kicks off would be a big boost to promotion efforts.
A mini-field and stands would be set-up in The Cloud, and there would be plenty of "screaming kids and fans" to watch the Prince play "keepy-uppy" and five-a-side football.
Prince Harry will captain one team, and a player from New Zealand's Under 20 football team the other. Mr Beeche said how exactly the public would be involved was still being sorted through."
Re: Ticket prices. Consider that ticket prices at the last u-20 World Cup in Turkey for cat. A group games were 39 TL (20 NZD)
https://www.tff.org/default.aspx?pageID=471&ftxtID=...
However compare income in Turkey and NZ:
In Turkey the average monthly wage is 767 NZD (9204 NZD per annum) and the minimum legal monthly wage is only 452 NZD (in effect 2 NZD an hour relative to hours worked): it would take a Turk on the minimum legal wage ten hours to save the money for a ticket.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_European_coun...
https://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/minimum-wage-of-1...
NZ average wage = 991 NZD weekly or 26.78 NZD hourly
Minimum legal wage = 14.75 NZD hourly
https://www.stats.govt.nz/browse_for_stats/income-a...
So a minimum wage earner in NZ would take about 2.66 hours to save the cost of a 40 NZD Cat. A ticket
In Turkey it took him/ her 10 hours to save for the equivalent ticket.
Someone on the average wage in NZ would take 1 and a 1/2 hours to save for a ticket
In Turkey many more...
So we've got it pretty good really compared to punters in Turkey for the last u-20's.
Glad to hear there is some advertising then! I'm still not optimistic of a big croud to the USA game though, considering it's Tuesday night in June at a stadium that isn't easy to reach for most. I'd be surprised if it passed the figure for the 1999 u17 game.
I'll be there, so can everyone please save the hate about Aucklander's not being able to handle a bit of cold from me please!

3/4 of Nth Harbour now sold for first game NZ v Ukraine = 18,000 plus.
Edit: new seating both ends (paid for I believe by Fifa) has extended seating cap to 25,000.
Reckon that's a pretty decent effort.
impressive.

3/4 sold two weeks out means you'd think it should be a sell-out by match day.
Of course I hope NZ wins this one - but I will be also hoping Ukraine does well in the tournament considering the situation in their country...
Really fortunate that Russia didn't qualify, to avoid major political complications.

Looks like I was wrong then... happily so.
It's good that we've got USA second up (as far as croud figures go anyway) because if we get hammered by Ukraine then there should be enough interest in 'Auckland casuals' seeing the US play to keep up the numbers, whereas v Myanmar not so. Just a theory.
Tournament boss sure it'll all be tickety-boo
Sold almost 200,000 tickets, wants to sell more than CWC did (for games hosted in NZ)
I suppose I should get round to buying tickets to the Wellington games before they sell out then

That's not a bad effort considering the last World Cup held in Turkey had a total of 289,036 tickets sold
And the first game is already 75% sold.
Full stadium for the first game would be a massive boost for the tournament and NZF.
Does NZF get any form of financial kickback for hosting the tournament, or do all proceeds go to the FIFA coffers?

This is our kickback for Charlie Dempsey's past honourable services to Fifa.

That is a phenomenal number of tickets pre sold a couple of weeks out. Considering the cricket WC sold 320,000. I guess if the final has sold out and 75% of the opening game then that is around 50,000 tickets. So 48 other games have averaged out at around 5000.....which is possible considering the other NZ games have probably sold well to bump up the average.
Its hard to gauge if the public will really get in behind this tournament. A lot will depend on how NZ go. If there is a fairy tale story and they actually win their first game and the press get involved then I would imagine it could take off. I'm not sure if kiwis know how big a deal this is. Its way bigger than anything like the Commonwealth games. Media reports in France say that the global TV audience will be way bigger than the Rugby World cup. Bet the egg ball media won't pick up that story, LOL

Don't tell anyone in the NZ government or Tourism NZ hoping the tournament will get massive viewing figures internationally and promote the country, but the figures will unfortunately be way down for this tournament.
FIFA are pretty crap with their tournament scheduling this year with the u-20 Men's World Cup in NZ on at the same time as the FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada and the Copa America in Chile (and the UEFA u-21 Finals early rounds):
FIFA Men's u-20 World Cup NZ: May 30 - June 20
FIFA Women's World Cup Canada: June 6 - July 5
Copa America Chile: June 11 - July 4
UEFA u-21 Championship, Czech Republic: June 17 - June 30
The Copa America has to be played at that time for CONMEBOL to keep European clubs happy (clubs would want their players for pre-season training and lucrative exhibition games in July). It's in the middle of the South American league seasons but the clubs there are willing to break for the tournament.
I question whether our u-20 World Cup had to be played in the first three weeks of June which is the worst time to schedule it for clashes with the other two major tournaments. Couldn't it have been played in July?
And I question the timing of the FIFA Women's World Cup which overlaps with two weeks of our FIFA u-20 World Cup in NZ.
The Football Ferns' three group games are all during the u-20 World Cup (7, 12, 16 June) with the Football Ferns' first group game vs. Netherlands (1pm June 7 NZT) on at the same time as the u-20 World Cup games in NZ: Germany v Honduras, Christchurch 2 pm 7 June and Uzekistan v Fiji, Whangarei 2 pm 7 June.
The group games in the Copa America in Chile are scheduled for June 12 - 22 (NZT) - 16 games of the 24 in the tournament with all except three of the sixteen played during our u-20 World Cup.
There are group games in the Copa America on the day of our u-20 World Cup quarter-finals, semis and final (and 3rd/ 4th play-off), some finishing just before our kick-offs with the time difference.
Internationally most TV viewers will opt to watch the Copa America and viewing figures for the u-20's in NZ and the Women's World Cup won't be great.
The UEFA u-21 Championship Finals in the Czech Republic have their first rounds coinciding with our u-20 semis, third/fourth match and Final (games on the same day - our semis and final will be on TV in the morning of UEFA u-21 match days in Europe involving Germany, Serbia, Denmark and the Czech Republic)
I question whether our u-20 World Cup had to be played in the first three weeks of June which is the worst time to schedule it for clashes with the other two major tournaments. Couldn't it have been played in July?
Some seasons in Europe start in July (well late July eg Scotland kicks off on 25th July this year) and the early rounds of the European competitions also start then, so you would get the same problem you mention for the Copa America in that clubs will be wanting their players back for pre-season training etc
While there are some that will watch the U20 & Womens world cup I think the audience for these is probably quite different with a lot opting for one or the other (especially in Europe) which is why I don't think FIFA are too worried about scheduling these competitions with an overlap
I think you will find that despite other tournaments happening at the same time the U20 FIFA WC is a big draw card for global TV viewers. Especially in countries in the Americas.....Mexico, Argentina, Brazil etc. There appears to be no direct clash time wise with Copa America games. This tournament is seen as being very important, with many of the stars of the future playing. I would not worry too much about TV numbers...they will be fine.
I'm sure you can buy tickets on the day. It would be ridiculous of them not to have them for sale on game day.
Just bought a bunch of tickets to 3 of the game days in Wellington online - selected "print at home", got confirmation of my transaction being completed but didn't get any tickets emailed to me or pop up on the website.
Fudgeing ticketek.
But of course they have taken the money off my credit card already.

PAX is over 10k for the NZ v Myanmar gameday already, and about 5-6k for the round of 16 and quarterfinal in Wellington. That seems like a pretty decent effort so far.
Went to buy tickets this morning, getting this queuing page on Firefox and IE but Chrome gets in straight away.
[Edit: countdown timer hit 0 and then went back up to 2000. Guess non Chrome users are not allowed to attend]
[Edit2: Not working in Chrome now either!]
I got that too, but i just cut the /busy.htm piece out of the address bar and it loaded perfectly.

Last year the World Under 20 Rugby Tournament was held in NZ with crap crouds and played on muddy fields. For the 2011 Rugby World Cup they claimed to have 4 Billion TV viewers over the tournament.
I wrote to NZ Rugby asking them how they could come up with such a figure when it is such a minor sport in World terms. I pointed out to them that if their claim was correct then they would be receiving several billion dollar TV rights which of course they didn't. They came back saying it was legally correct whatever that may mean. Then the clowns claimed that the Rugby World Cup was the World's third biggest tournament. The Rugby media lapped it up and quoted these ridiculous claims as fact.
Some tickets for final still available - just picked up 2 tickets (uncovered, covered sold out).
No PAX "sad face thing".

Slow ticket sales. They have sold 200 000 that's not slow. expectation is pretty high from this guy
