No really a surprise, when did England actually played good football in a Tournament? 1966? I love it!
2004.
Sack everybody.
So is Rooney going to blame the fans for this exit? How many goals did Kane score? Rooney was lucky to score that penalty.
"Woy what were wu wup to?"
Roy Hodgson quits as England manager following shock defeat to Iceland

Hahahahahahahahaha.
That is all.
Anthony Hudson, please note, playing the long ball all the time to wide players does not work.
Long throw not a bad option.
The players followed the instructions as per the referendum, they got out of Europe as fast as they could.
No excuses for this result. At no time did England look comfortable and the two things that stood out for me were they showed no bottle in 50/50 tackles and ball movement was too slow. The players let themselves down- I think they thought it was a done deal. Iceland was not great but at least they gave 100% and deserved the win. Hodgson has to take a fair bit of the flack as he has had the team for 4 years and never seemed to know his best side. Easy to say now, but when I saw Stirling in the starting 11 instead of Vardy the writing was on the wall. You play your form players, and Stirling was certainly not that. Outside of 2/3 players there was certainly not a lot of experience and that cost them. Milner was one that did not get any time on the pitch, and should have.
Will more than likely have to go outside the UK for their next manager.

Sterling, with an e, won the penalty that led to England's only goal in the match. I don't understand why he gets targeted with so much abuse (look at Kane ffs, tell me one thing he offered this campaign, just for example).
Apart from that, I generally agree with you. Especially the point that the next manager needs to be foreign. Look at the English alternatives, lol.
Who are people picking to win it now?
Italy are looking pretty damn good, as are Germany, so I reckon the winner of that quarter final will go all the way. I can't see Poland or Portugal making the final, nor Wales or Iceland (although how good would a final between those two be?).

France and Germany 3/1. Belgium 4/1. Italy and Portugal 7/1.

France was my pre-tournament pick, and I'm sticking with them. The only potential problem for them could be the semi-final, but I'm backing them to get through it.
I can see Portugal jammying their way to the final, but really hope that they don't go all the way.
This Iceland team really reminds me of the Irish team of the late 1980s/early 1990s (which coincidentally also enjoyed a bit of success over England).
Not pretty, but a very effective game plan which they were able to execute well.
England is in need of serious introspection - in four games against Russia, Wales, Slovakia, and Iceland they only managed one win. This England team aren't world beaters, but they should have done much, much better than that.
Think they have only had 4 wins in their last 5 tournaments
Leggy's comment about picking form players is spot on.
Such a short tournament, only between 3 and 7 games, you just gotta pick the guys who are on their game.
Rashford looked a massive threat in his 5 minutes for example.
Alli, Rooney, Kane, Sterling, just not in form for me.
There's something deeply wrong with the England national setup. I don't know what it is, but they always seem to crumble under the slightest pressure.
I wonder if it's not simply a case of multi-million pound egos dominating the team (question: were the 11 most highly paid players the starting 11?) meaning the manager is just along for the ride to act as inevitable scapegoat when the team don't achieve?

That is one of the reasons for sure.

The sad thing is England had the makings of a reasonable team. The back four are as good as they have had for many years. They have some potentially exciting midfielders with Ali and Dyer and Vardy or Kane can be devastating at times.
They just did not seem to have any clues on how to break down an organised defence. None at all.
I suppose getting through to the second round was an improvement on their WC effort but where to from here ? Who in their right mind would take on the England Managers job ? Perhaps we can send them Anfony?
No way are England's back 4 as good as they have had in years. The fullbacks maybe, but Smalling and Cahill are not even close to the likes of Terry and Ferdinand in their prime. Hart is also a massive liability. Not technically part of the back 4 of course but definitely a factor in how they perform.
I'm no fan of England but I think that there's always a tendency to overrate them compared to other sides. Realistically they never have a squad as good as the very best sides and they always seem to be tactically naive. Iceland and Italy both showed today that you can make a national side which is greater than the sum of its parts but England never seems to look like a coherent team. I wonder if it's partly the emphasis on physicality in the EPL, and also the lack of English players playing overseas and being exposed to different footballing cultures.
how long since Terry and Rio were at their best ?
how long since Terry and Rio were at their best ?
I suppose if I hear"best in years" I think longer term than a couple of tournaments ago. Sorry if that's what you meant.

I agree that there has been a constant tendency to overrate them, and especially from their media. And what makes it worse is that the same media turns on them the moment things start going wrong. This seems to lead to such a fear of failure that it almost induces paralysis - one of the best comments about the game I heard today is that it looked like every English player (with the brief exception of Rashford in the last five minutes) was waiting for someone else to do something. English second half performance wouldn't have looked out of place in Cap 9 - failing to control simple passes, overhitting set pieces out of play, tentative defending - it was quite an embarrassing display.
Hodgson was reading his resignation from a piece of paper, when did he wrote that?

I think Cameron wrote it for him. And now they're going flatting together.

Very obvious comments I'm sure have been made for some time.

That might be true if all of the team weren't currently playing in the EPL. They are competing and holding down places in The Best League In The World (TM) so how can that league be said to be holding them back?
More mentality for me. Basically nothing to do with manager or coaching. All to do with attitude, expectations and approach.
If you were picking the best XI from those two teams would any of the England back four make the team?

Would that be the case for most of the top teams though? or maybe various England managers have struggled to create a culture as well as managers of more successful teams have.
The English coach is shark which brings me to my next point...why do we have an English coach for our team the AW's

Hello England, this is your captain speaking
England captain Wayne Rooney: "It's a sad day for us.
"Sometimes not always the best team win. Once they got in the lead we knew it would be difficult to get the goal back because they are well organised.
"Going into the last 16 facing Iceland we were confident we could win the game. It's disappointing but we have to move on.
"It's tough. There are always upsets in football - it's not tactics, it's just unfortunate. We know we're a good team.

Someone should make him watch the replay just so he can see how many times he gave the ball away and how he had given up in the second half.
The sad thing is his inability to see how bad England are and his part in that.
