Yeah I'm excited for the game. Will leave the wife at the home show...
Serious chant chat.
Next Sunday...should be bangin.
I agree. Can't wait for it.
This all sounds very positive!
Was great to chat about chants and put some names to faces. Lots positive signs for the season to come. Thanks to Smithy for organising, Fever for the beers and Boycie and the Bencher for hosting.
Good chat today all. For those not in attendance, I think we decided on:
- the chants we think are our 'hits'
- chants we think need some work or refreshing
- ways to spread the word on our hits.
So I've taken upon myself to better organise the forums to pull out our favourites and make them more obvious to those on the forums. So look out for changes.
We'll hand out a few sheets pregame on Sunday to help increase knowledge and belt out a few chants pregame to get some practice in for the season. And we'll look at ways to get audio recording to help publicise.
For new chants being proposed/developed, we need you guys to help identify the ones you think will take off. Remember to consider it's simplicity, both in terms of words and rhythm/tune. So please, please, please be constructive in feedback. Most of our good ones have taken some refinement. And if you think something is good, use the 'like' button.
I think that just about covers it.
thanks guys, sorry I couldnt be there. will look out for changes!
Further to 2B's post:
(apologies - mines a bit longer)
General stuff on chants:
Developing chants: lots of consensus that people need an easy way to
suggest new chants without hyper-criticism. The forum will most likely
be the place where this happens. A few changes though, more
encouragement of new participants and changes to the chants thread so it
is easier to navigate, see existing chants, avoid duplicates, etc. There
was universal buy-in to starting pre-game chanting at the Backbencher
where chants can be tried, tweaked so we are all raring to go for the game.
Informing people: this was all about getting chants out to the fans. A
couple of obvious candidates like putting a section on the website and
chants in the App but also putting content on the Fever youtube channel,
fanchants.com, perhaps including something in the pod.
On the day: As mentioned, there was a real commitment to 'tuning up' up at the Backbencher. It was agreed that it's critical to developing chants and growing out our active chanting base. In the ground we'll look to come together as a group in the zone and give it a good ol' nudge. The active core will try and encourage others to join the core and grow it out. Also, the point was made that it is important to sustain chants so other areas of the ground can hear them, pick them up and join in.
Actual chants:
Lot's of good stuff reviewed and chatted about. Four sorts of chants:
(1) General team/club/Fever chants: 'Oh Wellington' is getting a bit
tired. We need additional chants to add to the mix that everyone can get
into to.
(2) Specific player/manager chants: Ideally we would have a chant for
all our players, legends and staff. Some club stalwarts don't really
have a chant yet, such as Siggy and Mossy.
(3) Opposition club chants: good old fashion ribbing of the
opposition. Plenty of good stuff for CCM ("There's only two Central
Coasts", etc)
(4) 'In' joke type chants: there is still a place for cerebral chants
like 'Seagull(Segal)' and 'Is she really going out with him'.
General 'getting involved' types of discussion, other points:
* The Fever needs more manpower for things. It might be handing out
flyers, helping with organising or something else as well.
* Hutt takeover: good opportunity with the games in the Hutt to reach
out to the community there. As above, needs a big volunteer backing though.
* Yoof development: we are all getting older - possibly more
responsible, some of the hard core have moved on. We need to get the
next generation of Phoenix fans to pick up the mantle of the Fever.
What's happening next?
We are kicking it off big time at the Backbencher for the Canterbury
game. Pre-Season isn't just for the players it's also for the Fever to
get ourselves into shape ready for the season.
sounds like a productive afternoon - looking forward t seeing/hearing the results on gameday.
Another topic that was discussed informally before the actual chants discussion was that a lot of us "know" people on the forum, and "recognise" people at the Backbencher/at the ground and nod, or smile... but don't talk to these faces we recognise.
We identified that the concept of having an online identity distinct from a real life identity is a relatively modern phenomenon. I mentioned that back in the Bloc 5 days with the Kingz we all had our mailing list names on the backs of our shirts... and how this acted as an ice breaker... you felt more comfortable going up to someone for the first time if you saw a name on the back of the shirt that you recognised... you always had the opening line of "Ohhh, so you're [insert name here]. I am BWTCF, Brandon that is... good to meet you."
It meant we ended up much more connected.
Before we started the chants discussion we all introduced ourselves and said what our real names were and what our forum IDs were... it was good... we put a lot of faces to names and connected a lot of dots.
I walked down to RYOS on Lambton Quay today. You can get your name (and optionally a number too if you want) printed on your shirt there for the prices below:
Names: Normal font $15, A League font $20
Numbers: (per digit) Normal font $10, A League font $15.
A bunch of us agreed it would be a great idea to get our forum names on our shirts. I'm going to take mine in tomorrow and get BWTCF on it.
Some club stalwarts don't really have a chant yet, such as Siggy and Mossy.
Mossy Blocky Shotty, Oi Oi Oi
Would the "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie" link put people off?
Oi hate the off season

I liked this idea on Sunday and am going to get it done for my shirt. Any idea on how long they take to print it?

Nope, will ask and report back when I go in tomorrow.

No problem, was just trying to remember who we did and didn't have chants for :)
Why are we using Riera for La Bamba? I thought we already decided that McGlinchey gets it because we use his name foir it in White Noise.
Already exist:
Smash My Boxall
Mambo Italiano
Mossy you're a Goalkeeper
Ideas:
Too Many Hicks on the Dancefloor
Burns burns burns, He's Nathan Burns, He's Nathan Burns (Ring of Fire)
And he's Tom Doyle, we call him Doyley too. (Loyal)

I think discussion was around the fact we had others for WeeMac that we came up with (Can't remember exactly what right now), whereas we were struggling while there for Riera. Guess we have to have that discussion :)
A few thought that the current "he comes from near to france, he drives an ambu-lance" chant wasn't working. Volare.
I actually quite like it.
Riera also seems to fit. I think you raise a good point though.

Wasn't there talk a while ago of using Bloodhoung Gang's "Fire Water Burn" for Rufer: The Rufer, the Rufer, The Rufer's on fire, we don't need no water let the (inappropriate word) burn, burn (inappropriate word), burn.
Could be a way to incorporate Burns into that too

I love this!!!
Link for those who don't know the reference:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Adgx9wt63NY
Perhaps it could be tweaked as follows:
The Rufer, the Rufer, The Rufer's on fire,
we don't need no water let the RBB burn,
burn RBB, burn!
With RBB replace with "The Cove", "North Terrace", "The Shed" etc. as required?
Let the motherrufer burn?
"we don't need no Wynton, let his little nephew burn, burn Alex Rufer, burn"?
"we don't need no Wynton, let his little nephew burn, burn Alex Rufer, burn"?
Genius.
"we don't need no Wynton, let his little nephew burn, burn Alex Rufer, burn"?
Genius.
I'm all about new ideas, but I think bloodhound gang is off limits for the motherfucker reference. We want the zone to be a more friendly place than that.
Also as a tune, the old bloodhound gang is a pretty monotonous drone. I think we need chants with a bit more life to them.
Smash My Boxall.
Thanks for the list Jono, will help me build up the list for the app
Dale is holding the master list for the app Paddy. Or maybe I am. We wrote it down yesterday. I will forward.
Louis FENTON (u21) - Louie Lou-aye*
This has legs. Here are the lyrics: http://www.songlyrics.com/the-kingsmen/louie-louie...
Louie Louie, oh no
Sayin' we gotta go, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah
Said Louie Louie, oh baby
Said we gotta go
A fine little girl, she waits for me
Catch a ship across the sea
Sail that ship about, all alone
Never know if I make it home
Louie Louie, oh no no no
Sayin' we gotta go, oh no
Said Louie Louie, oh baby
Said we gotta go
Be good if we could find a verse to join together two choruses.
"we don't need no Wynton, let his little nephew burn, burn Alex Rufer, burn"?
Genius.

Arguably the same. I don't love it. It's also (imho) a crap tune for a chant. Needs a tune to be sung.
When thinking up new chants, try to hum the tune. If you can't hum it, forget it.
For those wanting to get numbers/names on the back of shirts. Football central do it for free.

Really?
Is that just if you BUY a shirt they will put it on that shirt for you?
My answer was if you have an existing shirt, and you walk in and want your name / number put onto it...
