ASBP and A-league are breaking in January so wouldn't be hard to organise. And I suspect the Phoenix will want some kind of fixture to play in the gap to keep match fitness. Financially, imagne TeeDubs is a more obvious choise though.

how many of the knitting circle are in Morocco?
So you're not as hard core as you talk up?
Apparently there is 1, and 1 only, my spies tell me
Actually ASBP doesn't break that long. Back on the weekend of the 11th.

Takes more than one needle to knit up a storm JD.
Edit - sorry, misread. I guess you mean only one knitter has gone to Morocco. Sounds about right.

I'd go. But I think ACFC already have a game arranged in the ASB break, against Japan, in Newcastle.
yeah on the 4th. So would have to be midweek. Makes it pretty unlikely.
Nah, Steve Sumner worked this out. You just postpone the scheduled league game for a meaningless friendly.
Ben Williams is reffing. God help ACFC.
...how about the bit where he says it would get more people to it than Saturday's game?
So you don't think it's possible?

If it did draw a bigger crowd then it would be a shot in the arm to those wanting a 2nd A-League side.
Could also kill it if bugger all people showed up.
ACFC have won the ASB Prem a few times, Won the O-League a few times - Did well at the CWC a few times....This didn't help get any more people in the gates to watch them. Didn't get them more membership and by looking at there sponsors they're repetitive still the same. Nothing has changed and wont/ever/period under there armature guise.
When is the acfc cwc game?
To all those on this forum who keep insinuating ACFC are not largely amateur (so pull your head in JV and co) then please read the article in today's NZ Herald listing their day jobs. They train five nights a week and deserve ever cent of prize money their getting. I see the commentators have stopped the nonsense of calling them a professional club, which they aren't.
Not only is ACFC the saviour of NZ's international football reputation after the recent failures of the All Whites and hugely subsidizing the ASBP by their heroics at the CWC, but now commentators want their angel dust to fall on the Phoenix to boost their crowds. What next?
Beating the champions of South America is probably going to be a bridge too far but who knows. I expect Ernie to come raiding for more players in January but perhaps players will want to stay when they can go to major international tournaments and win things.
but that's also why I'm finding the narrative of "part-time footballers, who have taken time off from their day jobs" to be a little bit of a stretch. With the number of imports in the squad, and particularly in the starting eleven, it really isn't the reality.
Pull your head in Terminator. The Herald have. Obviously after the unsubstantiated article a few days ago which implied that ACFC were a team of full time professionals, the Herald have published two articles which mention the ACFC players jobs. Someone must have had a word.
So where is your spreadsheet showing that Ivan Vicelich doesn't run his own business? Perhaps he earns a living by winning on the pokies regularly.

Haha! you must have written that at the same time as I wrote the above post...
edit: Fudge this, you are not worth it.
All this talk about a special game between the Phoenix and ACFC in January - well City are playing your reserve side at Kiwitea Street on Jan 11th and you can have up to six first team players with ACFC's permission I gather. So get along to that, should be a cracker. We'll be honouring our heroes back.
Meanwhile we've got bigger fish to fry in the shape of the full Japan side wanting a warm up game for the Asian Champs in Australia in January. Now there's a mouth-watering clash to saviour.
Do you think perhaps NZF are thinking maybe they made the wrong choice for the All Whites coach after recent results?

Don't worry Ali, the anti-ACFC brigade are not going to let facts get in the road of their bile. We do appreciate all those on this forum who've come out in support of ACFC and its CWC heroics however. We're only too pleased we can help TW in their upcoming O League campaign which could even send them to the CWC.

You really are a misery JV.
Poor troll is poor.
Well done ACFC
Cue posts around how they have saved football in NZ for 2 years.
Funny innit. Once upon a time I would have been absolutely stoked by this ACFC result. Kiwis on the world stage, doin' it!
But you and your friends (or multis?) and your insistent trolling on here has gradually made me more and more apathetic about it all.
I suppose overall it's good for the game here because of the money and the exposure it brings.

What I think would be really interesting, and this isn't a troll or a wind-up, is a comparison between the financial situation of ACFC and the Morroccan and Algerian team that ACFC beat. What type of players do they have, what type of leagues are they? We know they are professional leagues, but are guys on $100, $1000, $10,000 a month? That would be really interesting, all the comparisons with Real, etc are kind of pointless
Would be interesting but ultimately irrelevant, obviously you can live on a lot less in Morocco than in New Zealand, and the buying power of your dollar is allot higher.
A part time NZ wage is likely higher than the average full time wage in some of these countries.

That's true, but I don't feel I have much context around how good those sides actually are and how easy it is for them to attract players.
Pinch of salt....Algeria comes in at 28
ugh I was really stoked for ACFC and was dreaming of a final vs Real Madrid. Now after seeing BM use it to gloat and push his own stupid agenda it has completely ruined it for me.
You guys really do make it fudgeing hard to support you in tournaments like this.
^ $2600 a week! Tamati wouldn't get out of bed for that!
out of interest, do any of you know how many ACFC fans have made the trip over for the tournament? Bet they're glad they did! May have even had to extend their stay past what they had planned.

You can see them on TV. Almost count them.

I don't know what you're being so sensitive about. I think ACFC's run at the CWC is great and the rest of my previous post was very complementary towards your club - particularly the back-room staff and volunteers. I think it would be fantastic to see some of those people get the chance to do their thing full-time in the A-League.
But the narrative about "part-time footballers, taking time off from their day jobs" is just romanticising and The Herald article today inadvertently substantiates that. As Napier Phoenix points out 7 of the ACFC starting line-up are either "coaching" or unemployed, so they aren't really part-time footballers. Another fact is that 6 of those 7, are foreigners. It's actually very interesting to get this insight into how ACFC works.
Is any of this important in the context of assessing the scale of ACFC's achievement? No, not really. Is it important in the context of discussing what this all means for football NZ and the review of the ASBP? Yes, it probably is.
None of which denigrates ACFC's achievements, which are still fantastic. In fact, they don't even need this extra layer of sentimental BS applied.

Interesting. So you would assume that players from both ES Setif and San Lorenzo would be above average given that they are the top teams in their respective continents. Therefore ES Setif players would be upwards of $140K a year and San Lorenzo $500K given current exchange rates. Also - and I'm not sure about this - could you assume that the cost of living in both those countries to be substantially less than NZ?
Thanks that's helpful, you can put a number of different spins on this. You could say that the Algerians are going to be fairly similar to an A-League team, if you assume wages correlate with strength and exclude lifestyle factors

And you know what, I don't give a sh** anymore either. You're spoiling it for the Nix too. I'm getting tremendous enjoyment out of supporting a NZ club that is putting an enormous amount back into NZ football. This "trolling" bullshark is all you can throw at us when we try and correct the constant stream of malicious nonsense said about ACFC by some of you. I've been positive about the Nix and hugely supportive of TW but that counts for nothing it seems. There are a few miserable small-minded anti-ACFC nutters on this forum. If a fraction of the crap they throw at ACFC was said about the Nix on this forum the ban stick would be out.
If any of you open-minded Nix/TW supporters are ever at Kiwitea Street then come up to the clubhouse and have a beer with the ACFC supporters because they're a great bunch who love NZ football. And yes, as far as I'm concerned ACFC are the saviour of domestic NZ football at the moment.
