'First up were Vicenza, a team who provided what was easily the sternest test yet for a Juventus side who began the game somewhat tentatively, and fell behind to a penalty after a fair handball call. The reaction however spoke volumes for the spirit found within the team and they showed great resilience to fight back, eventually equalising through a great goal by Stefano Beltrame.
Despite pressing on for a winner, the Vicenza defence held on and sent the game to penalties where the Bianconeris mental strength would once again prove the difference, with all five players who stepped up Padovan, Bouy, Libertazzi, Chibsah and Beltrame able to score and Lauren?iu Br?nescu making a brilliant save to see Juventus through.'

Knowledge that Beckham could still be in the squad, and appear in competitive games in the UK for possibly the last time, should help push ticket sales which, for GB games, are said to be strong.
In excess of 50,000 have been sold for the opening game at Old Trafford on July 26 and a double-header friendly featuring both the men's and women's teams will be confirmed for the north-east at some stage over the next few weeks.
GB will learn their three group stage opponents at the official draw on Tuesday, although it is likely they will be kept apart from fellow European contenders Spain, who are almost certain to include Manchester United keeper David de Gea, Switzerland and Belarus, plus Brazil, who will almost certainly be a fellow top seed.
Argentina, USA and Australia are amongst the most notable teams who have not qualified but the presence of Uruguay, Mexico and New Zealand should generate wider interest.
The final place in the men's competition will be decided on Monday, when Senegal take on Oman in a play-off."
Javier Hernandez (Mexico): Manchester United, in a fearsome Mexico side, which should also include Arsenals Carlos Vela.
Alexandre Pato (Brazil): AC Milan
Brazil is expected to take a strong team to London, with young stars and full internationals such as Santos Neymar, Espanyols Philippe Coutinho and A.C. Milans Alexandre Pato.
Menezes released a 52-player preliminary squad in March and included Ronaldinho as one of the players over 23. Others were Inter Milan goalkeeper Julio Cesar, Milan defender Thiago Silva, Barcelona right back Daniel Alves, Chelsea defender David Luiz and Porto striker Hulk.

Tony Veitch vents on the stupidity of having age-grade football at the Olympics
http://www.radiosport.co.nz/player/ondemand/1326578840-Veitchy-on-age-grade-football-at-the-Olympics
Is he aware that basketball, hockey, volleyball and handball are also at the Olympics. How this guy is still on air is beyond me.
Quotes from Emblen...
"Shane Smeltz is in great form," said Emblen, who will be joined by All Whites boss Ricki Herbert at the Olympics.
"Although we have three to four other strikers in the All Whites frame as well, he's definitely a player I am looking at.
"Winston is back and playing at a high level. Those are the other two players I would really like to get," said Emblen.

FIFA wanted to ditch the Olympics some time ago, but in return for certain privileges, kick-backs and controlling rights, guaranteeing them a huge portion of television revenue, the compromise was reached some time ago that under 23 teams would be sent accompanied by 3 over age players.
This kept the IOC's Juan Antonio Samaranch happy and guaranteed former FIFA head Joao Havelange a place on the IOC board when he retired as FIFA president

Ried Nelson Smith Hogg
Hicks
McGeorge Lindsay
Kosta Wood Rojas
Probably best back four any NZ side could put out. Midfield not world class but will be busy. Upfront we have quality.
My thoughts are we could go alright. Hope NZ get a good group. Whens the draw?

Point taken heaps better players than giggsy have missed the big stage

Hicks as a holder? What's his best position? What position is he playing for Central United?
I doubt Lindsay will get a start as he's been overlooked for the entire qualifiers.
I'm more interested to see what overseas Under-23 players get brought in

Luke rowe is solid but not in top three left backs in the country. Not quick enough for international level and Hogg and Milne and others offer better attacking options. Hoggs performances on the world stage for club and country recently have been world class.
Is that Raj lad for team Wellington too old? he looked a player yesterday against Auckland City.
I cant see us conceeding easy goals at the olympics with that back four! we just have to find a way too feed the front three.
Is Kosta too old? I don't think he is. Draps can slot in then if he is. That team above isn't too far off a strongest AW side. Again it is our midfield that lets us down. @ Touchme I was deadset serious about Elliott, as we ar piss-poor in the midfield in NZ mens footie right now. Maybe take Ivan instead of Ried as he has been a great servant to NZ and is more versitile then Reid (can play CB, RB, DM, CM).
McGlinchy. Eilliot and Vicelich are both past it.

Johnny Raj is eligible, but has been overlooked
