The CB was definitely playing him onside
Paulsen was immense as always, Surman looked great too.
A couple of tougher matches coming up but I'm just stoked we got a win this campaign, better than many thought we could do
Someone will be owing $100 to the charity of Coochie's choice am I right?
Garbett was a class above the other outfielders on the pitch, for either team imo, missed penalty notwithstanding. A little disappointed in Singh, but I guess he's short of match fitness after his stop-start season. Bayliss did nothing except assist the winning goal so I guess we've got to give him that but the levels we'd improve if we can add Old for game 2 instead!
Alex Paulsen is going right to the top. What a player, any country in the world would be lucky to have him coming through as a GK option, can't believe I got to see him live for a season.
This is already a better result for the whole games than we were expecting with the number of key players not released by their clubs so this is outstanding. Big tests coming against the US and especially France though, based on this morning we're an outside shot vs the US.
Yeah I get that, and any senior mens win in a high-profile competitive fixture would clearly rank above this. But the reality is we've had a single victory in that category in the last 20 ears. This and the Tokyo result are the closest to that level where we've achieved a win in my view.
Two well taken goals. Were we able to hold possession? How did Keita v Bell end up?
Get the long studs in! Looked like two slips on the highlights…
My prediction: 3 games, 3 losses, no goals scored.
Reportsare I'll send you a PM, once I've found that Charity's details.
Have also only seen the highlights, but this is a fantastic result. No doubt about it. Boxall & Bell arriving late. No Old. Randall (who would have started) also out at the last minute.
Well done Bazeley. Maybe he can coach after all.
And happy for Lachie Bayliss to get the assist. Reading through the comments sounds like he didn't have the greatest game, but this is his first time on a big stage like this. Wood, Bidois, Old & Randall are all fit or available, Bayliss likely isn't even in France, let alone starting this game. Seems a good bloke. Hopefully another to add to NZ's long term depth, as his career progresses.
What surprised me was how open the game was. The pitch seemed stretch for long periods for both sides, which meany huge work rates for the mids.
I would love to see the data on how much kms Bell covered last night.
Would love to see Oldy on there.
Best thing was the mentality. Coming back twice from set backs to take the lead. Doing us proud.
ASSE better release Old now, if we don't beat the USA then pool game 3 is going to be critical.

Interesting that Bazeley choose Garbett to play a bit deeper alongside Bell. Conchie stayed on the pine, with Bayliss starting. I suspect the thinking was Bell and Garbett would be better as an experienced combination in midfield.
I've only seen highlights, but Guinea did have all 3 of their o/a players starting in the middle of the park, including Naby Keita.
Also this would have been the first time Bell had ever played with Bayliss and Herdman. Not sure he's played much if at all with Surman, Bindon or Sutton prior either.
Furthermore Joe B came into camp very late. Just a handful of training sessions before this game. Should be better combinations for the US match hopefully.

What about a deal that ASSE release Old (if fit) for the US pool game only? Lose we are likely out, given the US should beat Guine in their last game, and we are realitically zero chance in Marseille against the French.
But we beat the Americans (2nd loss for them) we are mostly likely through to the quarters.
Even if ASSE said no Old for the final French game, or the quarters if we got there - Bazeley should take that. We really want Old verus the US.
🗣️ “I’m super proud of the lads today, the effort they put into that game was amazing.”

Back 4 were good. Sutton did well amd was very possible. Surman just plays like an experienced pro. Amazing maturity. AP is a genius.
Bell was good positionally and screened well given at takes midfield lost a little shape. Garbett was energetic as always.
Singh has the ball on a string. I have never seen a nz player measure a pass like him- it’s so special to watch. He was busy too and hungry. Good game.
Herdman was busy early on but wasteful and lack clinical touch. I think Ben Olds ability to hold the ball up and physicality and pace will add a lot if he can play?? What’s the latest.
Waine was industrious- great work ethic. Can see why he isn’t quite there in the championship given the physicality of that league.
Credit to bazeley and staff.
Bear in mind the number of games that Bell and Boxall are being asked to play too.
They have to manage themselves to last through the week after a heavy schedule before joining the team.
Trying to figure out where I can watch it.

Australia has free to air on their streaming platform 9go - you should be able to use a vpn to get it working from wherever
Edit: Just realised the streaming app is called 9now not 9go
Would feel more confident if both him & Old were fit & available for Game 2.
🗣️ “for myself, it was extremely important for the mentality, but also for the team to go one nil up so early on.”

Crazy game yesterday Argentina vs Morocco. Sold out game with nearly all Moroccan fans. Fifteenth minute of injury time Argentina score to make it 2-2. Moroccan fans go mental, pelt the Argentine players with bottles etc and storm the pitch. Ref pulls the players off the pitch and the stops the game. The stadium is cleared of fans. An hour fifty later the teams come out to play the last three minutes and VAR decides that an Argie player was off side by a centimeter so no goal. Finishes 2-1 to Morocco. Mascherano the Argentine coach called it a circus….it was.
I think Bell is overrated. Rufer streets ahead of him in my eyes.

Discovery+ in the UK in 4k. Has every Olympic men's and women's football game, most other sports too. Only $8 (£4) for one month. Might well be the best Olympic provider of them all.
Even better for those in NZ, Aus and Japan is that all games are on demand. Just sort out that VPN.

Her Ferns coach at London, Tony Readings now helping out Bazeley, and coaching her son! And Herdman senior has taken a short break from the MLS & Toronto.
There might be someone who posts pretty regularly on here, in France as well as a proud dad.

I was always suspicious that our discussions around Wood’s understudy were clouded because you knew some on the forum who might have been family or close to those under discussion!
Certainly I remember one game on the road in NZ when I was lucky enough to chat with 4-5 family members and coaches of players before the main game, just in the stands and lining up for drinks.

This player ain't in the All Whites. But yeah in France.
Yes I'm almost a lone voice on trying to justify why Bazeley (currently) picks Mata, but that's just moi opinion, solely mine.
I like those pics of players with their families. I'm sure every parent & grand parent is rightly very proud of their kid being an Olympian. And the Bindon & Clegg/Foy multi generational Olympian stories are quite cool.
Another nice yarn I read was of a young Jack Iredale being in the Sydney Olympics judo stadium in 2000, cheering on his judoka mum competing for NZ. Go the mums! For that reason alone I'd love for Iredale to become AWs eligible.

Ah- I heard the background to this and the Argentinians had well and truly lost any local support and many neutrals besides.
Apparently the team had sung a very racist song attacking France and particularly the French players of African heritage (in the midst of the far right scare and Mbappe being one of the voices against it). They had been videoed doing it on a live stream and the video released, publicised and they essentially doubled down.
A few players for whom it was going to cause employment issues in the PL apologised. Wesley Fofana called it ‘uninhibited racism.’ The French Football Federation complained through official channels.
So the reception in the multicultural town in France was already a bit different than Inter Miami already. I think there was a clear antagonism towards Argentina quite separate from the game.
As the old saying goes, I went to the fights the other week and a football match broke out!
