The only thing we will be missing from Boxall's omission is experience.

I rate Boxall as a player and it's good to have him around, but I think this will be a good opportunity for both Pijnaker and Stanger.

I'll be honest, I rate Stanger over Pijnaker, but I reckon we won't be missing much, and game time for either Stanger or Pijnaker will benefit them as players.

This is only my opinion though. Just think we will be better off playing a youngster next to Reid in this tournament over a CB pairing that will be likely retired in 5-6 years.

These Olympics also serve as a sort of preparation for next year's intercontinental playoffs/OFC qualifying prior. Given almost total lack of AWs games last few years, and still no news on any games going forward, they are almost AWs games by default.

So would be nice for Reid & Boxall as 1st choice CB pairing to get a few games together before next year.

This tournament isn't about development, its about performance. Our best performing XI should be on the pitch, especially given our weak draw & chance to progress from the group stage.

Looking 6 years down the track is a bizarre way to approach the only international football we've had in what feels like a decade, especially when the vast majority of player development is done in club settings, not international.

Yeah, valid point to make!
I agree with this too and see where it's coming from.
A chance for us to put ourselves on the map with literally no action for a while.
So get where the perspectives are coming from.

I see a back three now, with Reid in the middle.

Given the weakness of our pool and the players we have (and the players the opp countries don't have) , you'd have to say that not progressing would be a big failure. But ultimately when we do fail because route one doesn't get results it will be labelled a trial tournament for the wc qualis. Who can tell I'm still salty Des isn't at the helm.

Can't see Hay changing formation just because Boxall is maybe out. Stanger & Pijnaker both have some reasonable experience (in pro club environments for at least 2 years, and a U20 WC each). They are not complete amateur novices, in what is mostly an age group U24 tourney after all.

No nothing confirmed. Was reported as jogging at MU training but not training with the team. Didn't play for them on Thursday. Injury reported as a thigh injury. Not much other detail except MU coach commenting he though Boxall wouldn't be going to Tokyo.

With Boxall out it seems logical to put Reid in the middle so he can control both sides with some junior help.  We have an excess of defensive midfielders, the most defensive of which is Stensness.  He is possibly also the best Cb after Reid so it seems logical to me that he would go back there.
I guess we will see.

I still think we'll find it hard to get out of our group.

Those other teams are there on merit, not simply playing a few PI sides.

I'd be happy with a top two finish in the group but would not be surprised if we finish third.

I've never seen Stensness play CB. He certainly didn't this season for CCM. I rate Pijnaker at CB from what I've seen of him. Would prefer to see Stensness play DM, thought he did well in that position this year.

Pijnaker likely didn't get any game time, with the first team at Rio Ave, as they were in a relegation dogfight (which they lost), and coach probably kept faith with players who had seen them finish 5th in the Portuguese league season before, right to the bitter end.

Stanger got a bit more game time at Hamilton Accies, but same they also lost a season long relegation battle. Not such an easy situation to blood young guys in.

Both did well at U20 WC, and that's basically the age group they'll mostly face again in Japan. Put one of them in a back four alongside Reid, shielded by Bell and Stensness/Stamenic. That's all if Boxall is definitely scrubbed out.

TAB Au has us 16th out of 16, equal with Saudia Arabia to win a medal.
Bet 365 has us 10th equal with Ivory Coast, Egypt and Honduras. Both South Korea and Romania in our group are odds on to do better than us.

Will these agencies look at our national men’s rating and write us off? I would argue our U23 rating (if there was one) would be much higher than senior ranking

Australia TAB obviously don't have a clue, not surprising.
But Bet 365 sounds about right. Picking we will battle it out with Honduras for 3rd spot and a place in the quarters.
Honduras will probably do there homework on us a bit better after the U20 result against them. South Korea and Romania will both be tough games.
But I think a win and a draw in the group to get us through to the quarters should be the minimum pass mark for this team.

HALF TIME | Despite a late flurry of chances at both ends, we are level at the break.
0-0 #AUSvNZL #GoAustralia

39' Wood is released in the area and hits one with his left foot, which is saved well by Glover down low to his left. The resulting corner ends in a free kick to Australia after a foul in the box.

38' New Zealand attack again, with Chris Wood shooting from just outside the area. The @premierleague attacker's effort is blocked by Harry Souttar.

36' Action at both ends!
Liberato Cacace bursts down the left however his cross towards the onrushing Chris Wood is claimed by Tom Glover.

Glover sends a long release which Duke flicks onto Arzani, who unleashes a strike that is palmed wide by Woud.
