No offense to the island teams, but we should be crushing each team by a large margin.
Our tactics were awful, and as someone who knows several people in and on the verge of the team, i can safely say we are going to Mexico with one thing in mind, defend.
Just my opinion. First half they were shell shocked by that keeper error leading to the freak goal, and then conceded again after a good build up + finish. But they came out after the break looking far more composed and "up for it", and it was only their play in the final third that let them down.
Well of course Tahiti were up for it in the second half. They were well outplayed in the first, even though NZ didnt judge the strength of the wind well with it behind them, and had to try something, they were 2 nil down. But they were not in it at all. They didnt have any play in the final third at all, their passing was poor and their goalie, even though he made that first mistake, kept them in it with several fine saves. It wasnt a matter of if they would score, it was if NZ could get more on the board
To say Tahiti were the better team is a complete joke, I wonder where you are coming from with that. Perhaps you went there with a biased view, but I certainly didnt, NZ were far better, their defense was good, they did more than the hoofball you suggested, there was some good play down the wings , esp in the second half, they dominated them to be frank. Tahiti were reasonable across the back, their captain was an asset, but they were not as organised at all. NZ even won the niggles from what I saw
Our tactics got us across the line, the job was done. Plenty of work ahead for sure, but we only conceded one goal in the tournament, and didnt against the strongest team.

So who has got it wrong there then the boys side or the women's side..?
that is quite amusing
Dodgy... Tell you what is funny, McFarland applied for U17 Women's job and was overlooked for Paul Temple but now he gets the Boys job hahaha
Looking at Steve Cain's last campaign, "What do 95% of all the players chosen have in commin?".
Answer - They were either out injured for a month or two, could not make it to training or were out of the country. Advice - Dont go to every game and every training if you want to be chosen.
Quote from Steve Cain - The hard part is whittling this group down to 20
because there are a lot of players who are of very similar ability and
we have to look at all those little things that differentiate one player
from another and quite often its personality, how they conduct
themselves and they mentality with which they approach things.
Surprised the boy did not make the team. Cain obviously did not get what he wanted from the mother.
But this is only his story theres probably more.
Not a good situation all round.
You can bet that there is heaps more.
How people can be so stupid amazes me. Sure, the booze may have had an impact, but people have to take the consequences of their actions.
If Steve Cain was 22, one could possibly use the excuse that he was just a young guy, but at his age he should have known better.
Pretty embarrassing all round.
Tahiti were the better team and tried to play the better football. Unfortunately for them a massive error from the keeper cost them early on and they couldn't recover.
We are going to get done in Mexico. Unless some massive changes are made anyway.

I don't know if they were the better team, But the tactics of N.Z looked totally wrong

Just not convincing going into Mexico on a 2 goals in the final match. Are the boys still using old tactics? No offense to the island teams, but we should be crushing each team by a large margin. By this standard are we able to do better than 3 points in the group?
I am always interested in this statement - why should we be crushing these teams?? Maybe at senior level when players have been through the system but at this age the island teams are usually bigger, stronger and faster than us. We don't have any particularly special players and don't tend to bring back the odd guy who is overseas. It's not as if we have loads of preparation time or an abundance of talented young footballers, or amazing coaching. At u17 level this si the first major set of internationals these guys have played and it tends to show.
I haven't watched any games so I can't judge the ability of this group but we usually struggle against these teams, but are more comfortable the older we get
WHo went to the last U-20 World Cup?
Who went to the last World Club Champs?
Who went to the last World Club Champs?
Point taken HN. But the overall performance of the team all tournament was well below par. According to Cain this was their chance to showcase their attacking and creative side and they failed. In fact in the final they resorted to long ball for well over half the game. In Mexico they are essentially being sent to park the bus (i.e. hoof and defend).
The results to get there may seem good from afar, but they are far from good.

Parking the bus works for the senior team, so why not for the yoof
The Volvo 4 3 formation.Hard News2011-01-20 00:09:01
Should use a Volkswagen to keep the sponsor happy.
Don't think they make buses.
Have you ever driven one?
It's like a three Dale defence. Slow, lightweight and soft.

Playing for United I can assure you that I have driven one.
and lightweight? Got that one wrong
I meant mentally, not the size of your arse.

A 91st minute winner by substitute Alex Ridsdale was enough to give the Young All Whites a satisfying 1-0 win over a Club Brugges age group select in Doha, Qatar today.
Well done to Alex Ridsdale - Nelson Suburbs represent!

Just brilliant. Age group or not this is significant. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=10714678edward l2011-03-24 17:06:26
Hard to say how good the result is...
What age are the Club Brugge players, if they are up to 20 then the result is that much better in terms of the had to play against older, faster more experienced players. However, if our national under 17's only beat a club youth team from Belgium (not a notable league, although Brugge is a reasonably big club) by pinching a goal on the counter, then I am not hugely impressed.
Its a pity the age group games in Japan got cancelled, playing against other National teams would have given us a much better indicaion where we are at.
Still maybe one or two of the young guys got noticed by Brugge and will get looked at.
The article calls them their counterparts, so that would lead me to believe it was an U17 or U18 side from Club Brugges.
I see they got beaten again. Cain said that this tour has enforced the fact the the gulf between NZ and the rest is large.
Steve Cain has quit as coach of the New Zealand under-17 men's soccer team only two months out from the under-17 World Cup in Mexico.
Cain, who took the Young All Whites on a two-week training camp in Qatar last month, stepped down because of personal reasons according to New Zealand Football.
Aaron McFarland, co-coach of Auckland City and an assistant coach of the under-17s in 2009, will take charge of the side in Mexico.
The under-17 World Cup begins on June 18 and the draw for the 24-nation tournament is made on May 17.http://nz.sports.yahoo.com/news/article/-/9190089/cain-quits-young-whites-coach/

Very strange story to explain why Cain stopped coaching the U17:

Very strange, if he was getting these unwanted explicit emails he should have gone to nz football and the police.

A bit unprofessional from him I think, to blame it on a few beers is a bit of a cop out. To his credit though he has come out and explained the reasoning behind his resignation instead of letting the rumor mill go to town (if it hasn't already).

Sad, very sad. Hopefully it doesn't completely ruin his coaching career and he can come back in a couple of years.
Dreadful situation all round.
Inexplicable, spur of the moment, drunken brain explosion from Steve (who is a quality bloke from my dealings with him).
All the players will no doubt know whose Mum this is and that will have repercussions too.
The mother sounds like a nut job. He didn't deal with it well and should have sought advice. Hope it doesn't ruin his career.

Theyll be players who miss out that talent-wise are good enough to be there but it can come down to the balance of positions.
It can also come down to as a parent how far your c#*K is up his arse or how English you really are?
Surprised the boy did not make the team. Cain obviously did not get what he wanted from the mother.

Wow i just read the article. Cain you dirty bugger. Any idea who the parent is? Thats a quality story, some what unbelievable..yet but true.
yes we all know but we can`t say
Maybe he should tell the truth.
I think this is great news. The squad can know be changed and the best players in the country can now be selcted to represent NZ at a world cup.
Cain wanted big strong athletes with limited technical flair, interesting how Herdman keeps advocating that the focus must be put on technique with our youngsters and yet allows a Coach with very different footballing ideas to coach our top youth team?
Number of players from the Waikato that are training daily some twice a day that have to be brought into the NZ set up. If NZ Football do not bring these boys in, they are complete fools.
The team should be 4 3 3
Gk Take your pick
RB -Bill Tuilioma
CB-Luke Adams
CB-Jesse Edge
LB-Ryan Thomas
CM-Josh Thomas
CM-Ryhs Jordan
CM-Harry Edge
RF-Tyler Boyd
CF-Tim Payne
LF-Cam Howeinson
Subs: Warren Pinto / Jordan Vale/Stephen Carmichael/Ken Yamamoto
The rest of the squad down tthe individual coach's descretion.
Make no mistake these are the best players in country.
