2022 All Whites International Fixtures
It will likely be mid 30s to 40 degrees Celsius day time. Even walking around in that will be very unpleasant. “Low” of about 30 at night
Presumably all trainings and games will be in air conditioned stadia.
No update from NZ Football. Similar to the Canadian FA, they likely only make announcements when everything is 100% signed off.
And yipe as you say, Iranian media seem confident, they will play 2 games in Canada, then NZ in Qatar.
Good tough opponent for Canucks & All Whites.
And yeah having to play two CONCACAF Nations League games (Panama & Martinque) just prior the big Playoff, maybe a negative for the Costa Ricans??
Would they have preferred a warmup game or two in Europe/Qatar against a non CONCACAF team? Read somewhere that due to Covid they haven't played a team outside your Confed in a very long time. Small edge NZ perhaps. Though I guess the Ticos play likes of USA & Canada enough to get a feel for a 'non Latino' side??

TEHRAN – Iran football team will likely play Albania in a friendly ahead of this year's World Cup, the football federation’s secretary general Hassan Kamranifar said.
Because qualifying was so recent, I think there is still a lot of animosity that is going to carry over into June. I was watching Club Brugge-Anderlecht and Canada's Buchanan and Panama's Murillo were absolutely going to war with each other with running a dialogue on top. So I think Panama will definitely be out for revenge against the Ticos and will get the intensity up ahead of the playoff. Then Costa Rica can rotate the squad a little against Martinique and be fresh for Qatar.
I don't know when Costa Rica last played a non-CONCACAF side, but Canada played a B international against Iceland in January 2020 and outside of that it was the New Zealand friendly in Spain. Most of the CONCACAF sides have all been playing each other a lot these past two years.
cheers,
hobbes
Fine line but it wouldn't hurt if the Peru-AWs friendly in front of 40,000 Peruvian expats had a bit of niggle & feeling about it. Them beating us in 2017. Handy simulation for later in June, after a long time AWs playing sans crowds.
Kiwis in Europe! More tickets have been released for our upcoming game against @SeleccionPeru in Barcelona 🇳🇿🇵🇪

Only four starters from the All Whites' 1-0 defeat to Lithuania in 2019 - Danny Hay's second game in charge - have been included in the 26-man squad today. Team that day was: Woud, Payne, Tuiloma, Smith, McGarry, Ridenton, McGlinchey, Rufer, Rojas, Collier, De Jong.

Just quietly that's exactly what I was thinking on such short notice. Would make an extra treat for any flying kiwis planning on heading over and not only that an exciting opportunity for the players back to back occasions against packed crowds.

The game is supposedly meant to be behind closed doors, so I don’t think any fans would be allowed in. In that case it probably doesn’t even need to be a national side, it’ll be a glorified training run so could just play a local club team, similar to how we played Chivas USA in 2013 and NPLQLD teams in 2016.
You could play the 2nd string Socceroos or UAE if they had the same desire to give their bench players a run, presuming they win their game to face Peru
UAE sort of makes some sense as they could fly in extras for a game easily and quickly. Could end being a non international like Algeria A was

So no mugs, and it sounds like Hay will run mostly a 2nd XI against them, behind locked doors. AWs were due to play them March 2020, but Covid ruined that.

New Zealand Football have today confirmed Oman as the second warm-up international friendly the men’s national team will play ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Intercontinental Play-Off against Costa Rica.
The All Whites will face the Middle Eastern side on 9 June (10 June NZT) in Doha, Qatar. As previously announced, the game will be played behind closed doors and will not be broadcast live.
The match follows the first warm-up game against Peru on 5 June (6 June NZT) at RCDE Stadium in Barcelona, Spain. The game will be the first the team have played in front of a crowd since 2019, with 25,000 tickets already sold.
“We are really pleased to lock in this match against another high-quality opposition ahead of a massive game against Costa Rica” says Head Coach Danny Hay from the team training camp in Marbella, Spain.
“It is vital that we challenge ourselves ahead of the Intercontinental Play-Off but also have the opportunity to try things out. These two games, against Peru and Oman, should allow us to do both.
“Having the opportunity to give minutes to members of the wider squad is really important as you never know what can happen during a game. We need the entire squad match fit, battle hardened and pushing to make the starting XI against Costa Rica.”
Kick off time and venue for the game will be announced over the coming days.

Sorry. I'll see myself out...
Or is it Danny maybe not wanting Costa Rica to do any more scouting so close to the play off game?
Or is it Danny maybe not wanting Costa Rica to do any more scouting so close to the play off game?
Coach Schmid in his first AWs game had a closed door game against Canada way way back in 2018. Why closed doors then seemed strange, unless it was all about saving costs, ie the staging costs go up if you open the gates and then need local security staff etc. I guess that could be the main reason, some sort of cost saving exercise.

Yes, I'm available for the coaching role if something happens to Danny.
With the @FIFAWorldCup intercontinental playoff on the horizon, @WinstonReid2 and Rory Fallon look back on their experience in South Africa at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Not far from the play-off venue vs. Costa Rica, in the same municpality, Al-Rayyan which borders Doha, the capital.
Education City Stadium is in Al-Rayyan City itself, the seond-largest urban area in Qatar after Doha.

Love it, the old switcheroo. I'd say you'd be a shoo-in if Danny comes a cropper over the next few weeks. 😂
But yeah couple Socceroos friendlies in Sept would be great.

At stake is a place at the World Cup for the third time in the team’s 100-year history and a US$10.5 million [NZ$16.2 million] payday.
The strong position Pragnell refers to was laid out in NZ Football’s latest annual report, published on Friday, which showed it had reserves of $11.4 million after recording a surplus of $2.7 million in 2021.
You are probably right, but some risk spending based on the promise of a future large cash windfall, ie 2026 WC qualification. Remember the Horror in Honiara. Or what if FIFA completely change their mind, and stay with a future World Cup of 32 teams. Both unlikely, but could happen.
Anyway won't be such an easy process, finding quality AWs friendlies in the future, as all the Confederations setup Nations Leagues of their own. AFC teams busy with their Asian Cup in 2023.
And without AWs being involved in say a AFC/OFC combined H&A Nations League, there will very rarely be any quality teams playing in NZ (very few want to travel all the way to Aotearoa for a friendly over a 7 day FIFA window). And that's the real bane of contention, AWs playing so rarely at home. Not an easy fix.
In 2023 NZF will also likely switch a strong focus to the Football Ferns in buildup to home WWC. U20 WC in Indonesia next year, will likely be main focus of men's game in 2023. An age WC in a pretty good viewing time zone, hopefully. Though night kick off games could be past midnight in NZ.
Greive and Kirwan have shared similar sentiments since entering the All Whites fold, with the latter noting in particular how being made captain of the 1st XI helped set him on the path of pursuing a career in football.
The good news is that in the short term, things are about to change.
But with $11.4 million of reserves in the bank, NZ Football’s commercial revenue increasing by 35% over the past three years, prize money for playing at the Women’s World Cup increasing (though not nearly fast enough), and qualification for men’s World Cups – and the resulting prize money (NZ$16.1 million just for making it in 2022) – set to become more straightforward, the financial landscape is changing.
We are delighted to confirm the All Whites will return home this September to take on the @Socceroos, for the first time in over 10 years, at @edenparknz.

🎟 Tickets will start from $20 and go on sale this week, with a presale starting from today.
The All Whites will play their first home match in over 2000 days against Australia’s Socceroos at Eden Park in Auckland in September.
Sky Stadium would have, 36,000 at Wellington is way better than the same at Eden Park.
Such a treat to have the All whites playing every window as of late!
