Gold Coast United may have missed the boat on Bas van den Brink but the Perth-bound Dutchman has given his old club a farewell present with the recommendation of new signing, Paul Beekmans.
Twenty nine-year-old Beekmans joins United from Jupiler League outfit SC Cambuur-Beekmans and looks an impressive capture on paper, having played nearly 200 games in the top two divisions in the Netherlands between 2002 and 2008.
Standing at 191cm, Beekmans is an imposing figure and will add much-needed physicality and experience to a Gold Coast side that has lost defensive lynchpins van den Brink and Dino Djulbic and turned its focus to developing its two-time National Youth League champion squad into first-team footballers.
But significantly, he comes with high praise from former fan favourite van den Brink, who made his shift to Perth Glory official on Tuesday.
Such is his attachment to United, van den Brink has kept in nearly daily contact with Gold Coast coach Miron Bleiberg even after his move to Western Australia became apparent.
When Bleiberg asked van den Brink his thoughts on Beekmans as a potential signing, he gave him his seal of approval - even conceding that Beekmans is a just as good a player as himself, if not better.
"Bas wanted to come back to us but by the time we negotiated with him, Perth came along and unfortunately for us offered him much better terms," Bleiberg said.
"He's still in almost daily touch with me but he was kind enough to recommend Paul Beekmans to us. According to Bas himself he is as good, if not better than he is so hopefully we benefit."
Bleiberg pointed towards Beekmans' consistent playing time in Holland and his lack of previous injuries as proof that he will become an integral part of his squad this season.
"If you look at his history he has played more than 30 games every season, for the past 10 years - since he was 19. That shows you consistency and a good injury record," he said.
"He is an extremely powerful player and can play not only as a midfielder but as a centre-back. That's another advantage because I like to switch things around tactically."
The signing of Beekmans comes a day after United's first training match of the pre-season, an easy 4-1 win over Gold Coast Premier League side Merrimac.
Most of United's first-team stars were rested but the likes of Robson, Tahj Minniecon and James Brown all impressed in a makeshift XI filled out with youth team players and trialists.
Merrimac were stubborn in their resistance but goals to pacy striker Chris Harold, trialist Aman Hadid and two from Broadbeach's Tom Boland assured victory.
Another trialist, 27-year-old Belgian centre-back Denis Dasoul, played the full 90 minutes against Merrimac and looked handy at the heart of defence.
Dasoul, who previously played for Italian clubs Perugia and U.S. Foggia, has been without a professional club since 2008 but has since been plying his trade in state-level football in Australia.

United confirm McGowan loan deal

PROMISING young centre-back Dylan McGowan has joined Gold Coast United a one-year loan deal from Scottish Premier League club, Hearts.
The Qantas Young Socceroo, who celebrated his 20th birthday just last week, arrived on the Gold Coast yesterday and will meet his new teammates for the first time at today�s training session.
Adelaide-born McGowan spent much of last season on loan at Scottish outfit East Fife where he made over 20 appearances and earned rave reviews for his mature, assured performances in defence.
United Head Coach Miron Bleiberg said McGowan will be a good fit in his much younger squad this term.
�He is a very promising player who can play as a centre-back, in a defensive midfield position, or at right full-back. I always like flexible players and this loan deal is a very good arrangement for us and for Dylan,� said Bleiberg.
�When he went on loan to East Fife last season he did very well and his time there would have prepared him physically because it�s a very tough league to play in over there.
�Dylan was highly recommended by Jan Versleijen (Qantas Young Socceroos Head Coach) and has many attributes. Like most of our squad he is young and has already spent time overseas which will have matured him.
�He has been a target of ours for quite some time now so we�re very happy to get him - he fits the bill.
�Dylan will know by the end of the month if he has made the Australian Under 20 squad for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia.
�If he is included then he will go away with the national team for a few weeks then we will get him back in August.�

But there is speculation former North Queensland Fury and Sydney FC striker David Williams is moving to the club. Williams is a free agent after the Fury's demise. Heart chased Williams for its inaugural season, but is optimistic it will get him for its second.

Gold Coast United boss Miron Bleiberg believes the signing of Dutch defender Paul Beekmans is about as close to a sure thing as possible in the Hyundai A-League.
Beekmans, 29, touched down on the Glitter Strip on Monday morning and will train with his new teammates for the first time on Tuesday after a grueling trip from Amsterdam.
Bleiberg was proud to unveil his prized new recruit and he has every right to be after revealing the amount of background work that went into capturing the former FC Den Bosch and SC Cambuur utility.
With Beekmans boasting nearly 300 games of experience in both the Eredivisie and the second-tier Jupiler League in Holland, the United mentor believes any risk in signing the impressively-built Dutchman has been mitigated with proper due diligence.
"There were a lot of phone calls, a lot of e-mails, a lot of YouTube, a lot of other things you do that went into it," Bleiberg said.
"I watched some DVDs, I got some reports from other people. It's not an easy process. It's hard work and you're limited in the end with money."
"This procedure takes time but I'm happy. You try to minimize the element of mistake, which I believe we have done."
Beekmans said after eight years in Dutch football he was longing for a move overseas and spoke to some of his ex-teammates plying their trade in Scotland about a move there.
But the advice of recently departed Gold Coast fan favourite, Bas van den Brink, helped make the decision to shift to the Hyundai A-League much easier.
"I spoke to Bas and I asked him for some information. He was excited about it and told a lot of good stories," Beekmans said.
"A few years ago I was going to move to England as well but for some reasons it didn't work out. My agent told me about Gold Coast and I searched on Google and it was only good stuff here."
"I played eight years in Holland so it's a once in a lifetime (opportunity)."
Beekmans said he hoped to bring some much-needed experience to a youthful and energetic Gold Coast United squad.
"The coach told me and that's no problem, young players can grow and we're going to see how fast they can grow now," he said.
"The Dutch school of football is good I think and I hope to bring some new ideas to the young players that are here."
Gold Coast are also in talks with another Dutchman, this time a midfielder, who could join the club and take up its last remaining visa spot left vacant by German Peter Perchtold, who is extremely unlikely to return to the club.

This 30/70 split of additional gate revenue from the away games he plays in, that his agent wants is interesting.
Its ridiculous if they expect the clubs to hand over some of their gate takings. But if the FFA was paying it, and would be able to help out other clubs to a similar level to attract big draw card players, it might not be a bad thing.
