Okay, this is what I don't understand about this story. Anthony Carter's contract was just cancelled? Unilaterally? The story elsewhere was that the Bulls let him go for a better offer in Portugal
That wasn’t clear right? But seemed like he expected to be in the match day squad and perhaps starting, only to learn he was not a MacArthur player any more and his manager hadn’t been informed? Wasn’t much more context than that.
Daily Mail version is still up, with the caveat that I cannot in good conscious recommend reading anything in the Daily Mail https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-11809619/Axed-Macarthur-FC-coach-Dwight-Yorke-says-League-Australian-football-dire-straits.html
Daniel De Silva out for two to three months with a hamstring tear and Mathew Millar is out for three-plus months with a quad tendon injury. Absolutely brutal for Macarthur.
Investigations revealed a senior player was allegedly taking instructions from a man – believed to be offshore in South America – to organise for yellow cards to occur during certain games in exchange for profit.
The number of yellow cards were allegedly manipulated during games played on Friday 24 November 2023 and Saturday 9 December 2023.
Failed attempts were then allegedly made to control the number of yellow cards during games on Saturday 20 April 2024 and Saturday 4 May 2024.
Following extensive inquiries, about 6am today (Friday 17 May 2024), strike force detectives – with assistance from Central Metropolitan Region Operational Support Group, Odin – executed a search warrant in South Coogee, where they arrested a 33-year-old man.
He was taken to Mascot Police Station, where he is expected to be charged with two counts of engage in conduct that corrupts a betting outcome of an event, and two counts of facilitate in conduct that corrupts a betting outcome of an event.

The games listed are all Macarthur games. And there's only one person in the Macarthur squad who's 33 years old. And it's an old friend of ours. Holy crap I hope I'm putting things together wrongly.

There's a lot of speculation that another of our former players may be one of the others arrested due to the location of the arrest. Really hope it isn't the case.
Wow isn’t this crazy. South American links would make sense then. Hopefully they haven’t threatened him or anything.. Would this mean a ban from football for a bit? Or is it jailable offense???

Oh crap, the age is right for Kurto!
But that doesn't hit so hard, he was only with us for 1 season and left with Snake Rudan. Uli is different. We still love him. I suppose being a widower and a single dad of a toddler puts you under pressure to make rash decisions.

I hope for his kids sake he's not actually involed, would be an odd thing for him to do anyway - he's not exactly a collector of yellows.
Reading between the lines of the charges, "facilitate in conduct that corrupts a betting outcome of an event" might mean "relaying instructions from a Spanish-speaking dodgy bookmaker", and the other two were the ones collecting the cards

Wow, this is big.
Surely bans incoming for them and you would think that Macarthur would have to cancel their contracts also yeah? - assuming the bans weren't for the full duration of their contract (Although surely this is life ban material?)
Please don't tell me all 3 are former Nix players...That's embarassing.
Long bans for the lot of them if the case against them is proven.
I've got a lot of time for people who have previously pulled on a Nix shirt and since moved on to pastures anew, but they've royally fudgeed up here, the lot of them.
There was one pen a Nix player conceded long ago that made me ask questions of this kind. Under no pressure, no opposition nearby. and an out of character mistake.
If you look at all the interest in the YouTube broadcasts a lot are in foreign languages and some are even talking openly about losing money on bets.
There was a report awhile back worrying that this kind of thing might be a factor in the NZFC and local cricket as it was broadcast.
Disaster for MacArthur as a club, bad for the league and if it is Uli and Kurto sad for Mix fans who remember them very fondly.
If we want to be in bad taste about it, I remember wondering why people would want to go and play for Macarthur, and the answer came back "good coin". And if that's your motivation...
I got yelled at on Reddit for this take, but: you're in the twilight of your career, you're living far from home in a country where they don't speak your first language, your wife died, you're the single dad of a toddler, that's the kind of pileup of anxieties and disruptions that lead to making stupid or even criminal decisions
