I presuming it's only $70,000 in total?? So a few thousand each club, or school in the case of Tauranga Boys??

Bidois - Bay of Plenty & ChCh United
Randall - Welly Olympic
Toomey - Hawkes Bay
Gillion - Auckland City

Who out Joe Knowles, Ollie Middleton, Finn McKenlay, and Adama Coulibaly is via Hamilton Wanderers & Melville United AFC?

Any blow harding aside, AFC are doing a good job with the grass roots stuff around the Northern Region. Be increasing though to see how their potentially 'stacked' reserve team is perceived next year. Room for some friction in that space

They are doing a good job at controlling the narrative. marketing 101, make sure everyone knows about all the "good" things you're doing, keep them focussed on this and they'll ignore everything else - ie the clearly snakey dealings to get Paulsen from Bournemouth

It’s only snakey if you are a Nix fan. Their fans love the Paulsen loan deal

I have to push back on "snakey". Snakey would assume that they somehow "tricked" the Nix into thinking Bournemouth weren't going to loan him to Auckland. That would assume an epic level of naïveté from Welnix. I'm pretty sure they knew this was going to happen  but the price was right - and, given they're keen on repealing the Caceres rule, I honestly don't think they object too much.

I am talking more from the fans pov and maybe AP himself. I doubt that he was keen to jump ship to Auckland when he thought he was headed to Europe.

Snakey = shonky, ie not really in the spirit of the gmae so to speak, mainly because of the shared ownership - insider trading effectly. Had another club bought Paulsen would he have been released immediately to Auckland FC - I doubt it! Would he have gone to a smaller European club or a reserve side - more than likely. The only reason AFC have gotten a look in is because Foley is an owner of both clubs -  that in my mind is shonky/snakey dealings.

They are proud to make payments that they are mandated by fifa to do. Such blow harding.

I might be missing something here, but shouldn't that list include the Phoenix too? Saying this as Toomey was with us (ressies) for a few years without ever signing over to pro terms.

May have missed something in there, but just a thought. 🧐

He's on a scholarship deal, right? So not yet a professional perhaps.

Though he did have a breif spell in 4th tier of Finland which could be professional and so they were required to pay the money to the Phoenix.

Joe Knowles had time at Hamilton/Melville when he was down at St Peter's Cambridge, before going back up to Auckland (he was also at Bay Olympic before going south). Finn is from the Shore, so he played for East Coast Bays/Birkenhead before Eastern Suburbs. Fairly sure Adama had been at Western Springs for years/since a kid. Not certain about Middleton (probably Onehunga before AU, maybe Manurewa?), maybe someone with a Comet login would confirm.

As for the payments being compulsory, that isn't really true. When Sam Brotherton signed for Sunderland, us at Forrest Hill (Western Springs probably too) were 'asked' (told) to sign-away any compensation fees due, or risk Brotherton not being signed. (Ipswich Town did give money for Monty Patterson though, so good on them). Similarly, Birkenhead didn't get money when Alex Grieve went to St Mirren. I'm sure those clubs will be appreciative of getting money/recognition.

Includes the 2 goals scored against WSW on Saturday. Gillion's a nicely taken one.

Their defence already seems an early work on. Wonder if Hay is looking after that.

Interesting comments from a guy with 12 years coaching experience overseas, much of it with young kids, incl 5 year's at Fulham's Academy. Brentford prior to that, and then afterwards Melbourne Victory's U20 team, before landing back in Auckland.

Wonder if he will end involved with any AFC Academy.
Anyway sounds like for now AFC may just recruit talented 18-21 yr olds from the Northern League, and form a stacked reserve team in the same league.

Let the young 14-17 yr age bracket develop at their home clubs. Different to the Nix model of signing kids at a younger age, and them boarding at Scots College if they are not locals??

I guess as a 14-17 yr old in much larger Auckland, you are constantly coming up against better players in local club football. Different to say the smaller cities like Dunedin, Christchurch, Nelson, Napier etc where as a talented young kid you are best to relocate to Wellington to develop??

And of course the longer a young player is at the Nix, the larger the Solidarity payments if they do sign for a pro club overseas. That model likely not so important to billionaire Foley at the moment, as he starts a new club from scratch.

......if we’re honest, there are two professional clubs here now who could be described as academies.

One, (Wellington Phoenix) has an established academy, has clearly had some success developing players and has had some great people involved over the years. Now, Auckland FC have arrived and at this point, are not starting a conventional academy as such, instead building slowly with a view to identifying and tracking players before selecting them later. I’ve been impressed with their approach so far.

My point is, if we contrast New Zealand’s system of player development with the brutal nature of many players being released in England at 16 (from the YDP) or at 18 from scholarships, we are under no pressure to do this.

Both the Wellington Phoenix and Auckland FC will be a pathway for top young players who may have a chance to forge a career, but beneath that we need to stay patient, allow players to excel in their clubs, strive for first team selection, or simply, stay in the sport and enjoy the game.

For this reason I don't think it's a bad thing he's come back to the league. Bournemouth will be looking to see if he has the mental fortitude to back up last season's performance in the same league with a different team. He likely  knows they'll be monitoring his performances regularly for this reason.

pretty sure the system has changed in recent years that it's now FIFA who collect the payments and re-distribute - previously it was club to club.

Why’s that out of curiosity? I mean especially compared to the decade of Aussie football that sees Ange and no one else in the PL or top flight…

I have no idea. I've always wanted an Auckland team in the A-league, but these guys just don't give the vibes. I've been a fan of the Phoenix since 2013 so maybe that plays a part.

A few on here face the same quandry, don't live in Welly, but have until now supported them as NZ's sole A League club. Go with your gut. I have a pretty equal attachment to both cities. Lived in both. Have family in both. Now live in Oz.

But I'm staying with the Nix as my number 1 team. For sure the last Nix season helped. However I wish Auckland no real ill will, and they'll likely be my no 2 team, depending on how they behave. Not a fan of them borrowing Paulsen from Bournemouth, but hey it brings some added publicity for the derby games. And yeah like how they are adding to the depth of NZ football by signing a heap of Kiwis.

if by some miracle Welly got a NRL team then I'd be in the same boat.  The Wahs is my team, and I'd be stoked I got a guaranteed Wahs game every year in Welly haha

As to be expected, match report focuses on the Mariners. Though sounds like Doka showed up Tommy Smith for a goal.

Lots of changes for CCM in the 2nd half, so as usual can't take much from the game.

Well spotted. Apparently it was warm conditions testing the fitness, so maybe Tommy Smith melted and Sakai slotted in at CB.

Wonder how trialist Nikko Boxall went on the tour, and whether he earned a gig. Would give AFC an aging look at the back if Boxall was signed, alongside Smith & Sakai.

I wouldn't be that excited about AFC except that I'm impressed by the young socialists who've started the T-AFC fan group, so I feel obliged to go and help them out. I've already got my AL-SAROUT 19 t-shirt.

But Foley's mob *have* done the hard yards going around the grassroots clubs. I've already seen young lads wearing AFC shirts at Western Springs home games before a ball has been kicked in anger.
