the lawyers would successfully argue that there is no premise for 36% of teams being relegated from any league (unless NW is one of them)

hey lets not worry about what might happen as we all know CF will do what ever they like so lets just play football and let CF do there usual poor management of football when the shit hits the fan and rules need to be followed.

Marist 0 Wharf 2. On a cold and windy day at St Pats, Cappy is a Happy Chappy.

Marist had chances with the gale in first half for 30 mins but Wharf scored twice just

before the break. Second half was all Wharf but no more goals.  Webby is 40+ but

can still find the net.

Marist struggled when forced to play on a decent deck.

Glad to avoid playing on the disgrace known as Kilbirnie Park.

well i hear BNU were still in Courtney place for the first 45 and so were their supporters.

and in the second they had woken up and made it to the ground to a horror story that they couldn't put right.

but he with the most goals wins on the day…

next match up for these too might have some more spice i hope….

BNU supporters are always full of passion and will not want to see the double done I'm sure.

I wondered why you looked all tuckered out :)

You made some great saves by the way.

In depth match report from BNU coach Dene Bannister

BNU vs. North Wellington, Sunday 27th July 2014

1.15pm, Te Whaea

We welcomed 3rd place North Wellington to Te Whaea this week, in what was due to be our home fixture. A win today would put us in the box seat for a promotion place, anything less would leave North Wellington with a realistic chance of pushing us and Kapiti all the way.

We started well, playing into a stiff, swirly breeze and created a couple of half chances within the first ten minutes. North Wellington grew into the game as they tried to get in behind our fullbacks. Both sides looked evenly matched as we looked to settle into our passing rhythm.

We weren't moving the ball as well as we can, allowing North Wellington to press high up the pitch. We needed to increase the ball speed a notch or two. Ben Purser was reeking havoc against his former club, on the left hand side with his speed and trickery and Elliot Riley was keeping a watchful eye of North Wellington's key play maker.

With the game evenly poised, we were dealt a blow in the 20th minute. North Wellington were awarded a corner, somewhat controversially, as the referee missed a clear offside. However, the resulting corner was swung in from their left hand side and with some assistance from the wind, went straight in off the inside of the far post. 1-0 North Wellington.

Our troubles worsened 60 seconds later, as the North Wellington player lost two markers to find space behind the back four, leaving him one on one with goalkeeper Richard Woolgar. He made no mistake, doubling North Wellington's advantage. 2-0 after 21 minutes. The context of the game had changed dramatically in the space of a minute.

To the lads credit, their heads didn't drop as we dug deep, trying to find the spark that would bring us back into the game. Riley, was looking dangerous every time in possession and both Purser and George Frost were causing North Wellington trouble in wide areas. For all our industry, we weren't executing the basics, with several passes being under-hit. We had lost our swagger, which had served us so well in earlier fixtures.

With half-time approaching I was looking forward to getting the lads back into the shed to regroup and devise a plan that would get us back into the match. North Wellington weren't done however as they played in a speculative cross from the right hand side. The unfortunate Woolgar misjudged the cross in the swirling wind and as he tried to re-adjust, could only swat the ball into his own net. 3-0 North Wellington.

As the half-time whistle sounded, we trudged off with plenty to think about. Players know when they have made mistakes, they don't need reminding. Our focus was on how we could right the wrongs of the 1st half and get back in the game. We spoke about the need to press high, make it difficult to play out from the back, open out when in possession and dictate the tempo. We weren't going to go down quietly.

We bought on goalkeeper Adam Glover, who had returned from his two week honeymoon just hours before kick off. Glover would give us more direction and help the back four maintain their shape. It was a shame for Woolgar who is enjoying a fine season, both for the reserves and whenever he has stepped into the 1st team. The conditions were tough. He can hold his head high in the way he carried himself throughout the day.

North Wellington's tactics were clear from the start of the second spell. They sat deep and were happy to try and hit us on the counter. We immediately got stuck into the game plan. We had freed Elliot Riley of his man marking duties, and it was he and striker Paul Clune who were causing North Wellington some jitters. It was Clune who pulled a goal back in the 53rd minute with a sharp left footed finish into the top corner. 3-1 North Wellington. No time to celebrate. We needed more.

As is typical with this team, we believe we can win any game from any situation. We changed our system, and bought on attacking players Michael Ridd and Tom McCann. Both players picked up the pace of the game with ease and set about their work. McCann, formerly of North Wellington was keen to impress and his pace created several chances for us. We just couldn't find the second goal.

Ben Keat came closest as he drove a fierce shot millimetres wide of the left hand upright. We were knocking on the door for so much of the second half. Even playing three at the back, North Wellington were kept at bay, with Glover making up for lost time with some key saves as the game became stretched.

As the full time whistle blew, North Wellington rightfully celebrated. With two games in hand, and six points behind us, they are a genuine threat to our promotion ambitions. We will have our chance at redemption on the final day of the season.

Our players were gutted. We have dominated the league for much of the season. With four games remaining, we need to be realistic and own the fact we will need to win all four games to be certain of promotion. If Kapiti (three points ahead) slip up, we will be there ready to take advantage. We will need to approach every game with the necessary commitment and desire.

We have the bye this weekend. With many players carrying niggles, this gives us the perfect chance to refresh, refocus and give it one final push towards achieving our goals. As much as this season has seen a significant improvement in our results, the playing group will view anything less than promotion as underachieving.

While it was a disappointing result, there were positives. Our second half performance was a vast improvement on the first. Clune continued his goal scoring form, Riley was impressive on both sides of the ball in midfield and Man of the match Ben Purser showed maturity, pace and some classy touches to be a constant thorn in the side of his former club.

Thanks to all who braved the cold to provide us with some much needed support. It really is appreciated. I am just sorry we couldn't provide the result we all yearned for.

Several rival clubs have been quick to write us out of the title race. The players will be working overtime in the coming weeks to prove them wrong. It's Brooklyn's time to step up and join those clubs in Capital Premier. We have the ability, the belief and team culture to succeed. All that is left to do is deliver.

Look forward to seeing you all at the quiz night this weekend.

Dene.

Wharf were transferred off it a few weeks back as a precaution, apparently under water that Thursday but in the end was apparently great for the Central league fixture against Petone.

With Vic Uni (3 points) already gone, Wainui (11) almost gone, Naenae (17) hanging on to the pack, they seem the favourites to be the 3 automatic relegation candidates. If 4 go down anyone of Marist (21), United (21), Mar (21) and Wharf (23) could follow them. How do they finish the season?

Wainui - Wharf, United, IBU, Bye
Naenae - United, IBU, NW, KCU
Marist - IBU, NW, BNU, Wharf
United - Naenae, Wainui, KCU, Mar
Mar - NW, BNU, VIC, United,
Wharf - Wainui, KCU, bye, Marist

Can Naenae survive? Can they catch the pack?

According to that Wainui also gooooone. 9 points available would only get them to 20 points and no better than 9th place = auto relegation.

Tough run in for Naenae playing 1st, 3rd and 4th plus Wellington United.
Marist next worse with 2nd, 3rd and 4th plus Karori.
They'd be my faves for 9th and 8th, but might depend on location of those matches. Grass = chance, turf = not so much.

Yep great result. Puts us in a bit of no mans land in the middle.

Good call about United. Get on a bad run against teams around you and you're in trouble. Still, better than playing those top three who are all charging for promotion.

these middle teams who have games against the top three also have the potential to cause the top three some grief by taking points.

teams playing for their position for next year can sometimes have more incentive than those trying to win top spot.

so KCU have to watch there backs and take every point available as BNU and NW are on the case and have games in hand….

though i remember Mr Ferguson saying points in the bank count while points still to be won don't.

This isn't correct, Wainui still have 4 games.  One Eyed Nik forgot that Wainui also have a Tuesday game against Nth Wellington.  Wainui could still get to 23 points which is not auto-relegation

Yes they will. The playoff v No 9 in Cap Prem is listed for Wakefield on Xmas Eve.

Unless there is a legal challenge in which case Waitangi Day is a goer.

Dont forget arbitration for the 'unfairness' of finishing fourth to last and getting relegated. Gosh there maybe a 12 team league next year!

Not so. In a normal year No 10 in Cap Prem goes down and No 9 in Cap Prem plays the runner-up in Cap 1.

This can vary if relegations from Central League intervene. ....

EG Last year the playoff was CapPrem8 (Marist) v Cap1three (Seatoun).

Incorrect. According to the well written easy to understand regulations, if the top two teams in Cap 1 are eligible for promotion then this occurs automatically followed by necessary relegations (usually bottom 2 of Cap Prem).

Thanks DOC. You are right. The second v ninth challenge has been played so often

(and I often attended it) that I was not aware it doesn't exist now. Apols. It seems as

if the challenge is played only when the third placed team in Cap 1 is involved. You

learn something every day.

If this scenario eventuated, (in that the 4th from bottom needed to be relegated from Cap 1), the only "fair" way to proceed I reckon is to have a play off with the team coming 2nd in Cap 2. Still results in a 10 man league but at least the team finishing 8th in Cap 1 has something to show for it.

Otherwise Cap Footy is opening themselves to complaints galore, and will make it a 12 man league! Soon it will be a 20 team league like the EPL!

Nah no way you can deny 2nd place in Cap 2 auto promo. They've earned it and it's in the regs. Finishing 8th is always a chance of going down - this year is no different.

4th to last and going down is a bit harsh.
