Its Summer! - the Fever Cricket Thread. (Part 2)
Do you know if there are facilities in NZ where certain conditions can be replicated? The most obvious being sub-continent style conditions.
Also in Palmy and Lincoln... though Palmy will likely prove more effective/useful.
Australia rolled for 105 in Sri Lanka this morning. Seems like we got it wrong last season, instead of preparing green tops we should have prepared dust bowls and watched both teams get rolled for 150 and hope we came out on the right side.
I love test cricket globally at the moment, no really dominant side that wins everywhere. Pakistan could easily win this series in England, hopefully we will beat them in NZ this summer but then I'm not convinced we would beat England. Good place for the game to be I think.
No ABdV and Morkel in the South Africa squad means we are a real chance in South Africa as well, however Philander is fit and he constantly tears us a new one. That should be a great series. A drawn series there would be a success, even a series loss where the tests were close wouldn't be an awful result.
Wasn't referring to first class, was referring to the different types of pitches (clays and grass).
Afternoon all...
We're just starting to organise our cricket team for the coming season and looking for recruits. We're social but competitive and down a few players from last year. I'm out with a serious injury so will be handing over the captain's reins for this season but will still help to organise things in my absence.
We are a well run team, very organised, a lot of fun and get along well with a core of the team being around for about 15 years now.
Practice is optional.

If you've played before, it's an advantage but we've turned backyard specialists into decent players before.
Looking forward to a massive weekend of sport... cricket, football, rugby, olympics, and whatever the hell else is on!
why are we playing test cricket in the winter? has it been done before?
why are we playing test cricket in the winter? has it been done before?
Because South Africa want to get their future tours programme obligations to host us at home out the way? And no, its the earliest test in SA by a couple of months.

Still being treated like a second class citizen when it comes to Test Cricket.
For the next Test I would drop Guptill and Nicholls for Jeet Raval and Colin Munro....
The pitch is still wet for today, day 4, with an inspection in a few hours. Annoying. Oh well.
I don't know what they expect playing in winter.
I really hope we win the last one. Would serve SA right giving us the crappy winter tour and only two tests.

A big step in the right direction for NZ womens cricket. They aren't making much in comparison to men, but at least now some of them will be able to be full time athletes.

It's great. We were lucky enough to have Suzie MacDonald from the Blaze and even better, Sophie Devine play a game for us two seasons ago. They were great to chat to, proper professionals even when filling in at a lower men's grade and work their backsides off regardless. Watched quite a bit of Women's T20 last season and really enjoyed it.
48/3 v South Africa..Loose shot from Guptill ..has to go..Taylor omg.. Wasted wicket...Latham very unlucky...Brilliant technique from KW 'soft hands..
Henry Nicholls has to do something this innings, otherwise his Test career could be put into the Unattached FC category for a while.
Does anyone know if Southee has a dick pic of Hesson's? Cause I cant explain otherwise how he keeps batting ahead of Wagner!
And Guptill......sigh.....it's not easy being an opener, but Jesus - how many times is he going to be a bunny for the swinging or dead quick ball? (or the fatal combo, the dead quick swinging ball) If I had been sexually violated for every time Guptill got caught in the slips, I'd be a very happy man
I think that Jeet Raval deserves his turn opening. I'd drop Nicholls and have Guppy in at 5 when hopefully some shine is off the ball. I also think that Southee needs some pressure in the bowling ranks as well - he's no longer a threat and I'd love to see some work put into getting Milne Test match fit but I suspect that is wishful thinking.
Southee needs to pick his balls up and charge into the crease - he bowls like he is there for a long time, not a good time. Milne would be good, and I'm a big fan of Ed Nuttal at Canterbury.
Moving Guptill down the order wont solve anything - you'd just then expose his sharkness against spin. He either needs to eliminate his glaring shortcomings, or be moved on.
Having said that........is Raval really >> than Guptill? And it's not as if Latham has done much.....the thing is, both openers do just enough from time to time to keep them in the team.
I'd need to see more of Raval before dropping him in - there's always a tendency to big up the guy who isn't in, only for him to crap out when he gets in. The Matthew Sinclair Syndrome

Guptil is a stroke maker. You would hope that he could come in and flay the bowling at will from 5, without the ball seaming and swinging all over the place. I'd love to see some of that Astle-type power hitting in tests. He's been so effective in the white ball game.
But to put it simply, he hasn't done a damn thing to justify his place opening. 5 is about the only place where his selection could be justified.
I don't know Raval. But I have seen enough of red- ball Guppy to feel comfortable saying he's not a test opener. Is there anyone of the Fulton ilk who could do a job? Fulton came back and did damn well for us. I'll take results over future investment that doesn't pay off....!
Superb 77 from KW...would have scored a 100 if a certain RT didn't run himself out. Promising knock from Nicholls, power hitting from Wagner (maybe a pinch hitter in the 2nd Innings).....another KW would be helpful...

I think Guptill is a power hitter, best served in the one day and T20 forms rather than a stroke maker. A stroke maker is like an Astle (as you say) or a Waugh. When I think of Guppy, I don't think of a batsman playing a sweep shot of a spinner, or dancing down the track to crack one over long-off. Not saying he has never done either, but I can picture Astle/Waugh/etc playing those shots, whereas your typical Guptill shot is playing from the crease and holding his shot. He sees the ball really early and plays with hard hands......and those are two things openers shouldn't do.
The comparison you make with Two Metre Peter is an interesting one - they both strike me as very similar players - tall batsmen, opening the innings, both have shortcomings against pace/swing.
Fulton's "comeback" from 2013 saw him play 23 innings at an average of 28.4.
Guptill's "comeback" from 2015 has also seen his play 23 innings thus far, average of 30.8
As an aside, Latham's last 23 Test innings has averaged 39.5
Unfortunately for Jeet Raval, there aren't any more Test matches in this series so he'll have to wait to get a chance - maybe against the Indians over there?
No, against India the NZ selectors will keep pushing Guptill. He'll just keep playing until one day his average is less than Chris Martin's, and then they'll say, "but he's good at ODIs, you know?" Never-ending pain.

Pretty much only the home 2012/2013 series against England wasn't it for Fulton, where he averaged 69 in front of the home crowd. Did mean he finished with an average of 42 against England, whereas Guptill averages under 30 against India, Pakistan, England, South Africa and Australia.
Another day in the life of Tom "Trying to Compete for the Lowest Score with Guppy" Latham. Jesus Christ. We might as well start without the two lads.
...And now Guptill shows him he is equally good, both with a golden duck.
Should have opened with Southee and Wagner....can we get more than 26 ?!?
seems like a horror pitch now to face anyone on- let alone the wealth of Saffer quicks.

Fulton's return to the fold began in that England series, and he dined out on it for over a year before ending against the Windies
We have to look to score because sooner or later one [ball] will have your name on it. There's no point hanging around for that, so we'll come out with positive intent starting at the top with [Martin] Guptill and [Tom] Latham. Hopefully we'll have a bit of luck, then anything's possible.
That is not the sort of batting plan I want to hear from the coach about our test match opening batsmen.
and with that kind of attitude it is no wonder that Southee has never progressed as a batsman
