Yeah, If I had been at that game, I would have been extremely pi*sed. I'm use to that kind of loss after the NQF game draw.
Probably more likely that people buy the cheap seats, but go sit somewhere else when they see the stadium isn't close to being full

About the same as Nix tickets aren't they? Also have just started doing a student deal for 20 bux. But my motives here are suspect.

chiefs got 2 tries against the run of play, even tho the 'canes were behind on the scoreboard, always had the feeling they would sneak up there in the end
Despite trying there hardest to lose by dropping the ball at every opportunity. Did we claim even one of Waikato's kick offs?
Man the chiefs have been average all season. according to nzherald stats the canes dominated the game?
Sounds about right to me. The middle aisles were reasonably full as were the uncovered compared to the previous home games I've gone to this season. The people behind me were commenting how you could always see the ball in an entire game of football and how it was easy to mistake some of the white strips on the rugby field for the ball. This week's close loss was fair enough since they were the team that had travelled furtherest but I really don't see the Hurricanes beating the Crusaders next week. Product2010-03-28 11:35:48
Went by Hurricanes FB page.
Pretty keen for the Crusaders tbh.
I went to the game and was wondering about the crowd, I thought over 11,000, but not much. For the life of me I can't find anywhere online with the official attendance. Is it a secret? Doesn't rugby have geeky stattos?
Why oh why did I bother with that match on Saturday night? I went along with bopman hoping for a good evening's entertainment, and was bored sh*tless. I havn't liked rugby for 5 years now, but decided to give it a chance this season. Good lord it is awful.
That Highlanders match was rubbish, the Chiefs lost, then the Hurricane's game made the one in Dunedin look like an epic. I'm not talking about the result or scoreline, just the inablity of the match to entertain me. Rugby is sick I think, the new rules mean more points but the quality is shocking.
Then I watched the Warriors last night and loved it, it was a spectacular match and end to end with brilliant tries. Outstanding stuff.
I should have stuck to my conclusion I madefive or six years ago - rugby blows, league is the one.
Agree re those two games Chief but there were a couple of decent games, Brumbies - Chiefs game was pretty decent and so was the Tahs - Blues.
Real Rugby starts this weekend though, club footy!
From the jaws of Victory...
If it wasnt the refs wording, I dont think they would have given that try

You didn't go to last week's hurricanes game then, I take it.
I thought this week's game was ten times better as a viewer.
nope, I havn't been since the Force game. Its too expensive.
I went tonight. Was not a bad game (I'm no huge rugby fan) although the Hurricanes seem to have been cheated at the end there.
I will say that it is far too expensive though - all the cheap tickets were sold out by the time I got there ($25 the cheapest) and the next price after that is $41!
And then, when you get inside, half the bronze uncovered seats (the $25 ones) are empty! I'd say that they are 'at it' and these seats are not really sold out at all. Top price is $55 - can't understand why ANYONE would pay that to be honest.
And, a 15% surcharge on beer and food just to rub it in...
Probably more likely that people buy the cheap seats, but go sit somewhere else when they see the stadium isn't close to being full
Yes you are probably right.
I think they should do more to stop that happening to be honest. Pretty unfair on those who pay more.
A price in between $25 and $41 would be good as well. Almost everyone in the queue contemplated whether to even bother with the game when they saw the $25 seats were sold out, and I saw at least one guy not buying a ticket as they wouldn't accept his student ID that expired 2 days ago!
$41 is a farken rip off.
Its expensive for someone like me who doesn't have much to spend per week when you add getting to and from the game. It is at the cheapest a $30 event. While I can relax at home and watch on TV for free (parents pay), easy choice for a rugby fan who doesn't enjoy the game as much now.
Yes you are probably right.

That'd likely put the cheap seats up to around $40 to guarantee covering the extra security staff's wages. It happens at Phoenix games too. I've been a guilty party a few times. The only time I remember any stadium staff checking that I was in the correct aisle was the Bahrain/All Whites game.
Well if they can't enforce it, they shouldn't sell tickets that way.
Oh, they gave away a heap of free tickets for this one. Like all rugby players at coll got a ticket. So they probably gave out those ones but no one went haha
Yes you are probably right.

In interesting Rugby/Football crossover today, Ricki Herbert was watching Poneke v Ories at Kilbirnie Park.

Phoenix tickets are $28 and $35. A fair price IMO.
Yes student tickets at Hurricanes are ok for $20, but I'm not a student!
I drove past the Stadium as the crowds were filing out on Fri night & bugger all people were wearing Canes jerseys/supporters gear. At Nix games it seems that every 2nd person is wearing either a stripey or YF t-shirt. What's wrong with rugby crowds, aren't they proud of their team? Where's the support?
I just want to say that as a born and bred Cantab I was well impressed with the way your team allowed us to play with 16 players last week, with our extra man ultimately handing us the win.
Wongo of the team gear being worn I reckon it was 50/50 between Nix & Canes gear....

I read that blog by Marc Hinton on Stuff today along with the comments from other readers, and it made me sad. All the comments saying move the franchise to Southland, or Hawkes Bay, makes me wonder if the rugby watching public understands why the Highlanders cannot improve under the current franchise system.
The way the NZ franchises are set up, doesnt create a level playing field. This is as good as the Highlanders can put on the field at the moment, and thats unlikely to change for awhile with the current set up. For the Highlanders to improve they need Otago and Southland to go recruit players, and pay for them out of thier own pockets.
Otago is broke, the low crowds, the upkeep of Carisbrook, and very irregular All Black tests, they are losing money hand over fist and Southland is propped up by the liquor licensing trust's cash. They cannot go out and buy world class players, they have to rely on developing talent from a very small player pool. Gone are the days where promising players turn up at Otago Uni doing PE degree's, anyone who shows talent at age group level seems to have a Lincon scholarship thrown at them by Canterbury.
With the current franchise system, the Highlanders have first pick from a woefull Otago side, and solid Southland side, both sides not exactly full to the brim of All Blacks, and rely on the other franchises' leftovers in the draft to unearth talent and to build something from them. Thats not exactly a recipe for a title winning side.
Thats why the current system isnt fair, the Crusaders get to pick from a Canterbury side full of All Blacks, so they do well. Yet if you look at how much the Crusaders players get paid from the NZRFU with their contracts, and compare that to the Highlanders, it wouldn't be close. Its not really surprising why they are at different ends of the table is it?
The sooner the NZRFU overhauls the current system, and creates a level playing field for the franchises, the better. They need to allow the franchises to contract their own players, create a salary cap and provide funds to the franchises to be able to afford the full salary cap amount. And rather than the current draft system, have a proper draft, similar to US sports, the lowest ranked team gets first pick of the players who havent been contracted before at the end of the domestic season.
If that did happen, it would level the playing field for the NZ franchises in my eyes. And yes i know this is a long rant, but had to put it somewhere, and no one really seems to listen in the stuff comments.

The new collective agreement changes things markedly in this respect, centralises the contracts under the NZRU banner. Also a major review under way with regard the Franchise set up

It will be interesting what they come up with then, but after the mess they have made of the domestic setup in the last few years, I kinda have lost faith in them having the best interests of rugby at heart.
It's a joke saying that they should move the team somewhere else, they will just have the majority of the squad that the highlanders have otherwise weaken another NZ team. It's time that each franchise owned the players and could buy and sell who they like, even open the teams up and let foreigners in with a limit similar to the a-league, say 3 or 4 imports.
The Australian teams are allowed one marquee foreign player.
The South Africans can get as many as they want.
But the New Zealand teams dont have any? surely the rules should be the same throughout the competition.
I was reading an article about Greg Sommerville being linked to the Rebels thus ruling him out of contention for the RWC, how on earth can someone playing in the SAME competition be ineligble, super rugby and the NZRU is such a farce. The NZRU also controls which NZers can come and go, let the franchises bring back and sign who they like, Nick Evans would make such a difference to the Highlanders and the All Blacks, he is miles ahead of Donald and I don't get how the NZRU didn't see how big of a loss he was to NZ rugby.

Wow the 'canes game was painfull to watch, complete contrast to what I saw of the Chiefs/Stormers game. Glad the 'canes won tho.
Cantabrians chanting 'Oh Canturbury' at the rugby, anyone make out the the full chant.
the fairytale continues for the Reds, someone in aussie will be hurting losing $325k aus on the Stormers tonight
Callum Bruce !! Ohh this is great. Tense game.
Whats the score?
33-27 Canes
Everton FC2010-05-01 21:19:39
Canes just won 33-27. Callum Bruce missed a sitter kick when it was 28-27 and then Tialata scored on the buzzer to get the bonus point.

Yeah, I saw that at halftime and was surprised but then their handling errors really let them down. I don't think the best side won as it could have been anyone's game for much of the game.
The cheifs definitely looked like the better team by far in that first half.
Maa Nonus colourful language in the post match interview after the Canes beat the Chiefs. It starts at 305. There's even a reference to Ricki Herbert's post AW vs Bahrain match interview.

Canes running themselves into a pretty good position here, most of the teams fighting for those final 2 spots have to play each other in the last two weeks.
