I'm hoping he has a good game and doesnt disgrace himself. Would be good for everyone. However, you just don't know with this guy.
The man in the middle - Referee Admiration/Angst/Appointments thread
Ben is up and running. Almost an opportunity for a first yellow in the first 2 mins.

And there is the first yellow, after 6 minutes. On form.
Worthy of one to be fair but earlier in the first two mins, there were 2 incidents and I am surprised he kept them in his pocket..
BIG call by Williams to not award that goal and call offside (linesman didn't flag it). To be fair he got it right.
He didn't call offside, he called handball. And it was. Great decision by Williams (can't believe I'm saying that)
yeah commentator talking shit.
Still remember getting reffed by O'Leary about ten years ago and thinking this guy is good. Doesn't happen too often ha

Ok,well he was offside as well.
considering these could be two volatile sides, he actually has done a decent job and gotten most of the calls spot on.

Although ironically he missed the most blatant deliberate handball by Costly right in front of him earlier in the game. Honduras probably not a good future holiday destination for Williams. Or anyone for that matter.

Yeah man, one of the Honduran players was shot in the head and shoulder during an attempted car jacking 3 years ago in an apparently random attack. Imagine a calculated attack...
What the fuck is going on? Ben Williams with another huge call and gets it absolutely right!
He's reffing out of his skin!
Thought Honduras had a definite penalty shout but apparently it's OK to bearhug a striker as a cross is coming in. Odd, because I clearly remember Williams giving a penalty against a Heart defender last season for similar contact, and sending him off for good measure.
Pretty much the only bad decision he made in a very passionate and committed game. Well done Ben Williams. Please be like this next season.
Thought the ref in the Ghana v Germany game was quality today. How did O'Leary go?
O'Leary alright. The lino on the far side atrocious.

Mark Rule flagged offside a definite Dzeko goal. Put Bosnia out of the tournament in other words.
Hardly atrocious. Made one mistake. Bosnia had plenty of chances, so put themselves out of the World Cup.
Except Bosnia were pretty rubbish and butchered a few very good chances.

Pretty huge mistake, which had an effect on the shape the match took.
Given your assessment of the reffing in Central v Birkenhead, forgive me for questioning your judgement this time around.

Alright, have a picture then
Never said it wasn't offside. Just pointing out that Bosnia can look at the mirror as well when dishing out blame.

I agree. I think you just misinterpreted what i was saying tbh.
Funny thing is that the picture is wrong too. Whoever is in charge of the graphics needs to read the offside rule.

I'll shut my face then.
Apart from one or two more cards that I might have given with 15-ish to go, Pete had a pretty solid game and certainly didn't disgrace himself. Obviously Mark made a big error, but Bosnia were woeful.
TVNZ running with the line "Kiwi officials cost Bosnia a spot in the round of 16", as though this was the only reason that Bosnia didn't win the game. I agree with otagofan, O'Leary had a good solid game.
How do appointments work in the knockout stages? Do they try to keep the 'teams' of officials together or do they select the best of each type of official and group them together like that? Because O'Leary has a chance (albeit a small one) of getting a knockout game, but the three of them together probably have no chance.
It's still wrong, the line is in the wrong place.

I think P. O' had a good game but that is not offside. Not his call, was the linesman.

Yup, I agree, definitely not offside. Was just backing up my point from above when I pointed out that you can't always trust images like these because the offside graphic that comes up can be in the wrong place, which it is here. Dzeko is actually further onside than the graphic suggests. Nothing O'Leary could have done about it though, and I hope his World Cup isn't over because of it.

Sure he could have done something about it.... The Assistant Referees role is to "indicate offside & is subject to the decision of the referee".
The referee can overule the Assistant Ref....He didnt have to blow his whistle :-)
I hear the NZ match officials are being offered a 2 week all expenses paid one way trip to Bosnia to explain it. Massive call by the lino, left O'Leary no choice. Solid match otherwise and was good to see him not falling for the exaggerated responses to some tackles. Even helping players to their feet to stop time wasting.

Agreed, he could have. But in that situation, you trust your ARs. They're in the best position, and far more often than not, they get it right.

It's all about the team. Ie at the last World Cup, Webb got the final with his ARs Cann and Mularkey. He was always going to be a long shot for another appointment, but I suspect this means his tournament is over, bar perhaps a 4th Official appointment.
Of course NZ news media jumping on Kiwi refereeing decisions costing Bosnia, bla bla bla.
They could look at it the other way: Bosnians try and intimidate Kiwi referees who make brave and accurate decision. (I'm referring to the non-foul before Nigeria scored and the whole bench had a go at the lino).
So the Nigerian player clips the Bosnian players right calf with his right knee causing the Bosnian to fall. That looks like a foul.Very hard to see that.
O'Leary alright. The lino on the far side atrocious.

Mark Rule - what kind of level has he refereed / assistant refereed at?
In my opinion, only officials who have refereed in professional leagues should be given games at the World Cup.
I know O'Leary is an A-League ref and that's good enough for me. (Interestingly, how many A-League matches did he ref last season?)
But Mark Rule (and fellow assistant Hintz) - only ASB Premiership? Not a good enough level.
ASB Premiership is probably a weaker league than the Conference National and some semi-pro regional leagues in England and weaker than the State Leagues in Australia.
If people overseas (and in Bosnia) found out that the assistant refs for an important World Cup game only had experience reffing in such a minor amateur league with crowds of fifty (Otago) to a few hundred, they would find it laughable.
