Outstanding effort by Otago today, proud to be from the region. The lineup we had was spot on if we can display that form over the season its going to be a cracker. So excited, all Caversham players did well today Rich and Andy have got it spot on. Andy should have clubbed that ref after the game i wish he did they were embarrasing
Southern Football (incl Southern United)
Boys did well very poor calls cost them
They should play the lad from half time, at least some of the balls forward would have found our strikers feet
Good structured performance from Otago this week, did what they had to do & were unlucky not to get some points if not all three. Auckland hardly threatened & only ever looked like scoring after Regan got sent, which was a rubbish call.
How bad was the Auckland left back?
agreed judda wasnt a good player when are you domming the otago colours again justin?
Until NZ Football sorts out the refs in this country the game will never build. That was a shocking decision yesterday which robbed the lads of victory that they had worked so hard for. it was apparent from the stands that there was confusion amongst the OU boys as to who was going to take that throw in. I was left gutted for them. Agree with you Judda16 that Auckland, whilst they had the majority of the ball, they never created clear cut chances until the red card. Seems Waitakere also recieved a 2nd half penalty in "dubious" circumstances to knock over Waikato 1-0. Declan edge may be correct in suggesting a conspiracy theory in order to keep the 2 Auckland sides competing in the O-League.....
Wish I could have seen this game - heard it was a classic. Otago sitting back absorbing the pressure. Auckland running out of ideas by the minute. Otago scoring a weird goal. My old man was there. He says the ref was an absolute twit - and that's strong language from him. He thought every Otago player was just superb and the coaching staff got most everything right on the day. So well done all round! Let's back up next week please!
I had $600 on Auckland at $1.40. Easy money.
Was surprised the fight that Otago put up. Full credit to them.
King Ivan must have been too much for them to handle
"King Ivan" looked troubled by Burgess and Stevens on the limited occasions they got at him. Over-rated lump. The wee left footed guy was by far their best player, always looked to get involved. I'm sure he was playing for someone else last season, Hawkes Bay? Think if the lads can replicate the fight from yesterday then Canterbury could have a tough time. Don't think Clapham will appreciated being manhandled by Day and co.

"King Ivan" was one of the poorest players on the park. He was directly responsible for the Otago goal and lost the plot at times, was arrogant and a bit obnoxious in his dealing with the referee/his own team/Otago, yellow card was rightfully shown, lucky not to get another one.
I'd say they won despite him, not because of him.

I'm over the blaming the ref thing - it's out of control. Sometimes they get it right, sometimes they get it wrong. Hopefully, the 'TV official' does not start creeping in - what's the point of having a ref on the park if he continually refers upstairs.

Nothing personal, or against Auckland City, Ali - but I have to disagree. The TV official, or some other form of technology, has to 'creep in' IMO because there are some poor decisions being made all over the football world, and these aren't even necessarily the fault of the officials, but they spoil the game. The game has changed; it's so much faster and players are much more adept at cheating. We definitely need technology to help get those often game-deciding decisions around penalties correct. We aren't talking about stopping the game 'continually' at all. Just key stuff relating to the goal line, penalties and simulations. The incident in the weekend was, by all accounts, a young inexperienced ref giving a second yellow for time-wasting when, as I understand it, a warning was more appropriate since there was no intention to time waste, just a bit of player confusion. And blaming the ref in that situation is perfectly warranted by both coaches and fans alike. How else is the young ref going to think about his game and improve if he doesn't get told he got it wrong? You can bet your life if it had been an Auckland player that was sent there would have been some serious crap go down.
Considering the league has no money now (cannot afford a 3rd round) and cannot afford TV coverage, who is going to pay for this TV referee stuff. There are no comms kits as far as I can see and plastic rolodex subs boards instead of electronic boards? How many teams travel on the cheap and cannot stay overnight? The league as a whole has far bigger issues than paying for TV officials. To add to that, it does not exist on any other league in the world so how the hell is it going to happen here.
As far as a young ref, I think its his 4th year?
It was a really good game, a vastly improved performance. A couple of stand outs for me,
Joel, power of work. No disrespect to Aaron but at times he was doing the job for two. Could benefit from being a lesser light in a stronger team.
Back line were rock solid for 70 minutes, marvellous effort, pressure did tell in the end. Remember thinking at one point that Fergie had ran out of puff then they scored.
I thought "Little Lion Man" and the striker were being naive with the throw in. They left the ref with no option but to book someone and since the "Little Lion Man" was nearest the ball it was him. Might be paying his own fines.
Central/Ivan were rattled in the second half. Some of the Central players didn't ender themselves to the small but vocal crowd.
Quietly impressed with the Ref, did a good job of keeping the game flowing. Wasn't heavily involved even when the emotions were getting the better of some.
Ill be Back..

Always intelligent from you Vader. My response to Ali was a generic one - of course the practicalities of achieving even a modicum of 'technical review' are beyond the Premiership at the moment. But it must happen soon at the top end of our game, surely? Vader I would be interested in knowing how old that ref is in years. Four years of reffing may seem a lot - but he still looks like a kid from the photo I saw, and based on what I've heard of the decision he made he showed his immaturity and lack of 'life wisdom'. Mature refs not only know the rule book inside out, but they understand what it means to ref in the spirit of the game and see further than the letter of the law. I bet, for instance, that when he pulled out the second yellow, he wasn't aware Colidcott was on a yellow (not that I can ever know that - it's just a gut feeling). Mature refs keep track of that sort of stuff, and weigh it up. How many times have you seen good refs give players on a yellow a good ticking off, when according to the rule book they would entirely justified giving them a second?
Nat,
I understand your comments are "Generic" and are intended to be supportive.
The Ref did seem reluctant to pull the card. The players had pissed round so much he was left with no choice. "Little Lion Man" had ample opportunity to take the throw but couldn't make a decision or was put in a poor position by Ant (not sure if right). Between the two Otago players their decision making caused the Ref's reluctant action.
Im sure we will agree on other matters.....

Dino - I wasn't there mate, and you were. So I'm not sure we disagree even. My Otago heart is bleeding a bit; that's probably the crux of it.
Here is my annual trolling post for the year:
Otago is going down this wknd at Canty's first home match. If it's anything like last years match it should be a cracker.
As you were.

Vim that's not such a troll even. We are going down? Yeah maybe. But maybe Canty will. My bet's on a draw. The game should be a cracker? Well that's a tribute to both sides - I hope it is a cracker.

Sundays game is a perfect example of how a guy like Tim Horner will come in handy during the season coming on with 20 mins to go with all his quality and experience to close the game out.Shame he wasnt around Sunday. Also heard coburn is home for 6 weeks during the summer,Marquee player?

I get what you mean about older referees and experience but then the older ones like Foxy, Fletcher, Hester, Kerr, Cross got equally as bagged so where does it end? At some point, the stocks have to get replenished (I guess like a high school sports team when the seniors leave) so... He probably is a kid (Waugh) but there are no older referees really around anymore and the one really good one in Stoltencamp seems to have disappeared. I guess the other thing is where do these kids cut their teeth? On substandard winter leagues in substandard conditions. Now you take a team like Otago that consolidates the best players in the region (I am assuming here) then those refs go from rubbish winter football to better stuff. There is no middle ground or learning time if they are new. Also I guess there would be a difference between the Northern, Central, Mainland and Southern leagues too. Not making excuses and no defending them but I think the one world class referee we have in O'Leary, he gets bagged as well so I think there needs to be a little bit of perspective.
On another point I did note that someone else mentioned in this thread that the Japanese left back was rubbish, yet he keeps playing every week. Surely he must get tossed soon for being obviously crap each week (same as the officials?)
Yeah I have had to eat a large dose of humble pie with regards to him. I never rated him but in the last 18-24 months, he has really come on and shown a lot more poise and maturity.
Otago 1 - 1 Canterbury

Yes I heard about this. Basically it was last year when there were 2 games in a row at home to Canterbury. A case of giving it and not being able to take it. The coach started calling the spectators a bunch of 'W a n k e r s' and other expletives. He could certainly give it but could not take it. He obviously does not live in a glasshouse.....
Seamus Ryder spotted at fashion week here in Dunedin. Priorities on fashion over football?

Get a grip conte.
draw at $4.30
otago boys might be staring on the cat walk for fashion week....watch this space
3 points in the bag sums it up really. Canterbury certainly could have made more from their opportunities in the first half....
Otago coach concentrated on coaching instead of abusing spectators which was great to see. Certainly seems to have produced a better Otago team than I have seen in the past decade. Full credit to him with the limited resources he probably has.
If he starts presenting himself in a manner expected of his players it may fall in place ie take your hoody off...... Good stuff Richard Murray....
Does anyone know if the Otago v Canterbury game was filmed?
would be nice to see footage from the game
