headline mass brawl in Albany outside the game, any news on what sparked it?
I didn't see any mass brawl (except the one which was narrowly averted in the Zone) but I believe someone got hit by a car on the way out of the stadium, at least that's what people around me were saying.
I was impressed with (apart from the goalscorers) Boxall, Themi, Monty Patterson and Musa when he came on. Marinovic made some red-hot saves and I defy anyone to really argue that he should be dropped. The Solomons' keeper, for his part, also did well and was all that was keeping them in it at some stages.
I'm expecting someone to contradict me, but I was pleasantly surprised by a lack of hoofball. Wee Mac did much better in midfield than I expected.
To be 100% accurate, I think most of the anger in the Zone came from people upset that we weren't in our assigned seats, rather than we were standing and chanting. But of course standing and chanting in widely separated seats would not be very effective. Anyway, New Zealanders are notorious for being unhappy with people not behaving just like everyone around them, sadly.
Good to see us spanking a poor Solomons team. Thought Wynne was ok - he's an athlete and looks calm on the ball. Patterson puts a hell of a lot of effort in but needs to do the simple thing way more. Wood and Thomas ooze class and Boxall looking very solid. Agree with the point about Roux's delivery - if he can get the final ball right it will be a big help.
What a shambles with the crowd. Looked like the Fever folk were having a great time but we couldn't hear you - who knew NZF couldn't organise a booze up in a brewery?

I agree with you about Patterson, didn't really see any cause for the negativity other people were seeing. His biggest strength is his biggest weakness though - he is extremely confident on the ball, likes to receive it and wants the ball at his feet. However he has a tendency to hold on to it a little longer than he probably should but was doing OK and at least managed to pick up a foul a few times instead of losing possession.

Sounds just like he was at Mt Albert Grammar. I thought he was now playing in a pro environment.
About time we proper smashed an Island side.
Think Wood should be put on a plane back to the UK now in J class as a word of thanks for being the gun who always turns up. It will help him in his new career with his club.
And assuming the cards progress, wee mac be given a break
Gives a chance for Bevin and Musa as well.
If we can't defend a 5 goal advantage without Wood there is no chance anyway
just north shore rich kids with to much time and money on their hands then?
"Uh uh Wood on fire", classic commentary from last nights six goal game. We get you Wood we feel your passion for the shirt - and shorts.
Yeah it was already going on before the game was over. Nothing to do with the fans.
Was at the game last night and while we played well in parts I think we can be a lot better. The delivery from Roux and Patterson was dire in the 1st half in front of where we were sitting. Not rating Patterson especially in midfield. Lewis for mine is far better, not sure how he's not in a pro environment yet.
Wood and Thomas really good. Imagine if we add Reid, Smith, Rojas, Lewis into that team and it starts looking really sharp.
Impressed with Brotherton as well.
Solomon's were pretty poor and were slipping over constantly, plenty of rain during the day and sprinklers pre game so it was wetter underfoot than i think they expected.
But hey 6-1 Is 6-1 and we've essentially done enough already, barring something ridiculous in the islands.
ALL WHITES GAME used as click bait.

Clayton Lewis has signed a contract for the UK. Just waiting on ancestry visa. Asked him face to face tonight.

If he's good enough at that style of play to become a professional footballer why would he suddenly change? That line of thinking makes no sense at all. I thought he was fine last night. Showed inexperience but also put in a huge shift.
My modest appraisal of the game and some of its players:
1. Kosta just seems to get in the way of what the team are trying to do in my opinion. Not withstanding the occasional cracker of a goal, he intersperses that with poor vision, goes himself when players are in a better position, gets in the way of our 15m striker when he has a sniff. Things tend to grind to a halt when the ball gets to him.
2. Both Roux and Patterson got into some good positions to provide the killer pass to Wood but kept hitting the first man an the move died. Get that right and we can expect good things.
3. No argument, Wood and Thomas are all class.
4. While we should of scored a dozen, can't be too disappointed with that performance 6-1 at any level of international football is probably rare.
5. Musa looked composed but that could be attributed to the level of opposition and time he was injected, but I always liked him anyway.
6. Good to see these players and the ones missing playing at a reasonable standard of football.
7. I think Hudson can tick the box of building depth in the squad, there will always be moans about who he hasn't picked but this has the bones of being a good side with the return of Smith, Reid and the 3 fatties. If we could add Boyd to the mix, that might be something. It would be hard to name a team that everyone agreed on and that shows a level of depth.
Jobs not done yet, Honiara can be a nightmare and the Sol island have nothing to lose. They already have a away goal.

Job is done, if we cant defend a 5 goal buffer even with our 2nd string side then we dont deserve to get to the playoffs.
They have to beat us by 5 goals. The job was done last night to all intents and purposes.

He's always shown tenacity and skill with the ball at his feet. I was hoping that being in a professional environment he would by now have added something else to his game. Regularly finding team mates with a pass would be good.
by all accounts patterson plays wide left at ipswich, and given mccarthy's style of footy, he's likely to be drilled into robotic type actions (not knocking this btw, this is the old school british way). imo i thought he looked like a wide midfielder struggling to adapt to playing in the middle in a relatively free role. given more simplicity and restrictions, and played in the right spot, he might be ok for us
i thought we looked good last night and while we still need to be much better than this, it's reassuring to know that we are now comfortably better than our local rivals even with several key players missing and for this hudson deserves credit

Not unexpected, shouldn't be needed for the return leg & keeps their clubs happy with us.
Better score one early to take the risk away.

If we lost by more than 1 we should give the game away.
You new to this Jeff?
I don’t believe for one second that this tie is in any danger but a 0-2 loss in the return leg would not surprise me.
Massive credit to Wood. He's never, as far as I can recall, pulled out of an AWs squad with a bogus injury. There was that one time he went to his sister's wedding but that's because the games were rescheduled. Otherwise he's managed to be the best striker in the Championship and pick up an EPL contract (and a goal on debut) while still turning up to play unglamorous games on the other side of the world. Totally deserves a rest now, and I wish some of our other stars were as committed to playing for their country.
Kinda odd how there's been no comment on the game or the result on the Oceania website: www.oceaniafc.com
They usually pump anything & everything out at the drop of a hat.
Massive sulk? Preparing another AW ineligibility claim? Musa is ours... isn't he?
Any extended highlights available?
I wish some of our other stars were as committed to playing for their country.
Is it that perhaps Winston Reid and Tommy Smith have the same issue that Ryan Nelsen had for so many years - i.e. CBF dealing with the current coach?

Oops fat iPhone fingers. Didn't mean to endorse. Reid and Smith are both somewhat made of glass (esp Reid) and injury prone. I think they get on okay with Hudson. Smith undoubtedly had issues with professionalism of Herbert regime and NZF.
Let's face it they are really both 'imported Kiwis', born here but raised elsewhere. Neither are likely to live in NZ once their carers are finished. Wood has much stronger ties to NZ, and much better attitude to playing for AWs, whilst the other two will always have any 'injury' non availability questioned based on past form.

Some other thoughts on the game.
Was a great result but doesn't change my opinion of Anfony. If we do something special in November then I'll be impressed.
Roux really needs to sort out his crossing/final ball.
Really impressed with Boxall - dominant, strong and looks very confident. Also like they way he moves the ball a lot quicker than Durante. Whether it's a simple ball to midfield, square or even backwards he does it quickly so the ball keeps moving which is something we've struggled with before. From what I've observed of Durante he always takes an extra touch or two and by then the midfield player wanting the ball, ie Weemac or Thomas has been closed down.
The reason why Wood and Thomas got so frustrated with Patterson is that too often he ignores the simple option and ends up losing the ball. He's got a lot of potential and he works really hard, but he doesn't need to make the killer pass or run every time. Contrast the way he plays with Thomas and it's obvious who is more effective.
It would be interesting to see Boyd in the October squad just to see how he has developed. The opposition was poor but Musa looked good when he came on and did everything you want from a DM.
It was definitely the performance we wanted so hopefully we do get the Japan game plus another in the next window to keep developing

Yeah but Reid's mum took him to Denmark, and I presume still lives there with his step dad. So I figure he may say Denmark was 'home' if you pushed him.
Sure Nelsen was raised in NZ but has an American wife, and I doubt will ever return to NZ. I think these issues play a part when shaping a players commitment to flying 20 hrs 'home'. Not excuses, but just reasons why these players are/were less committed to the white shirt. Also to cut Reid, Smith and Nelsen some slack they are/were more injury prone as they aged.
I was pretty surprised at how little the Solomons offered. Not sure if it was because we were really well organised and didn't allow them to play, or if they didn't really believe they could do much.
