Worth a crack.
All Whites vs Peru | First leg | Sat 11 Nov | 4:15pm | RoF
Never really understand how the rankings work. They have not qualified for the World Cup in 36 years. They did come 3rd in the 2011 and 2015 Copa America and lost in the quarter final in 2015. They came 5th in South American qualifying. Why are they considered the 10th best team in the world?
The rankings are a crock of shark. I read the other day that France were only "seeded" for the world cup draw because Wales, Swizterland, Chile and Peru didn't win their last games. Otherwise Fifa world've considered those four teams better than France.

The ranking system is geared towards the top teams, if you play a team in the Top 20 you get more points than if you play a team in the bottom 20 IE NZ would get more points for just playing Germany than say beating Samoa
So as Peru regularly play the other South American teams - 4 of whom are in the top 10 (as well as Peru) they get more ranking points each game they play

So after we play Peru twice we go zipping up the rankings whatever the result? Result.

well we will go up (unless its something like 7-0 in both games), although what usually sends us zipping up the rankings is a bad result against one of the island nations dropping off (results from the last 5 years are counted towards the rankings)

My understanding of the formula is that margin of victory has no impact. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Rankings#...
A 1-0 win over Western Samoa is better than a 0-1 to Germany. The 3 losses in the Confed Cup meant we received 0 points from those games.
if we lose 0-1 or 0-10 to Peru we will collect 0 points.
To achieve the best results for our ranking, Oceania World Cup qualification should have a double round-robin just like Conmebol. Similarly playing friendlies against teams we can beat. The wins will be weighed down by Opposition and Confederation strength but we will be getting ranking points.

Aye go with the above, I was going of the old system which I thought only changed a couple of years ago (it does feel like 2006 is only a couple of years ago right!)
anyway basic answer is that Peru play 2 games every FIFA window and against higher ranked opposition in higher weighted comp (ie World Cup Qualifiers as opposed to friendlies) so get more points when they win or draw
A little bit off topic. But I need to update my All Whites shirt. Anyone know best/cheapest place to do this?
Thanks!

Probably try Rebel Sport or these guys
I would like to see:
Marinovic
Boxall Reid Smith
Roux Themi Doyle
Thomas McGlinchey
Wood Rojas
Bench:
Tuiloma
Ridenton
Barbarouses
Wynne
Durante
Colvey
D Ingham
backup keeper
_
Right back is the tricky one - would prefer someone more experienced than Ingham.
He is inexperienced and his flank will be targeted

No keeper on the bench Bevan? Dicey.

6-2-2! Somewhat defensive don't you think?
Our wing backs are going to get steamed by the pacy Peruvians. I think we need our quicker options down the flanks. Who is quicker Wynne or Doyle?
Great to read that three key Peruvian players won't be released until 5 days before the playoff game. We are going to need all the help we can get!
Guererro's got some big games for Flamengo coming up in the next few weeks to, including a south american cup derby against Fluminese - home and away.
In that weird phase were I'm now watching about four different leagues for injury news and praying to Wynton that Wood, Reid, Rojas and Thomas stay fit.
What's the story with Storm Roux? Where's our squad list?

Update? Go Retro, Bro!

Doyle works his ass off, Wynne is a lot more composed and technically better.
Overall, Wynne is a smarter player, but not as hard-working than Doyle.
It's a hard one to pick for that if I am honest.

Mmm :/ Ingham got absolutely rinsed a few times by the Japanese wingers (especially that guy from La Liga)
I heard some radio report today talking about the cost of the away leg for the AW's in Peru. The mentioned the figure of around 2 million. I was never great at maths so someone help me out here. Im guessing at a touring party of around 40, players and associated staff. Flights and accomodation. 40 players into 2 million by my count comes to around 50k each person. Surely it cant cost 50k per person for flights, accomodation etc et?
Aren't they chartering a plane?

The report about the possibility of chartering a plane with Peru to try and bring costs down.
I would have thought chartering a plane would cost more than the usual way. I still cant work out how 50k per person is the cost of flights, food, accomodation etc etc.
Marinovic
Boxall Reid Smith
Roux Tui Doyle
Thomas Mac
Rojas Wood
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bench:
Themi
Dura
Barbarouses
Boyd (i can dream)
Musa
Rufer
Moss

Boyd's pace would be great for the team, fighting fire with fire.
Tossing up playing Rojas at RWB and letting Boxall slide over as Rojas is certainly not a central player at heart, but then again there's a reason I'm not manager.
Tuiloma is severely underrated by Hudson, we need a strongman/tackler in mid and can swap in Themi/Musa if it suits.
Sorry Ingham but I don't want to see you anywhere near their left winger Edison Flores (widely known as one of the most skillful players in Europe - no exaggeration). You miss the cut.
Got my FeverZone ticket today! Looking forward to my first ever game in Wellington!
Managed to get one of the last silver tickets in the pre-sale. Ended up picking up a Phoenix ticket for the Sunday at 50% off, thought I may as well do both games.

Have done the same, its a shame that the handy prem game isn't on an hour earlier. Would then have time to get to 2 games on the Sunday. Going to be the best weekend away at the football no matter what the results are!!!!

Anyone know approx what time the Nix game will finish? I've got a bus to catch from the railway station at 7pm.

Around 6:15pm. Should be plenty of time.

Bear in mind chartering a plane is much more expensive than buying seats on a commercial flight.

But the report said they were looking to charter a flight with Peru to lower costs, thats the strange bit. It mentioned costs before any charter option were about 2 million, doesnt add up to me.

Ingham has potential, but isn't quite there yet. I think he's more of a long-term project, and can really be a good player. He will be very good for us at the 2019 U20 tournament, and also in the future, but right now, he isn't quite ready. His fault for the second goal against Japan - At his age, all he can do is learn from his mistake and move on - that's what'll make him a good player. I think he can go on to be a better player than Roux and definitely Colvey, but right now he just needs to build and work hard.
I think Lewis is in the same boat as Ingham, although, Lewis proved me wrong at the confeds cup. Won't say much about Dyer. But we do lack depth in the midfield role.

Came through in the email with my All Whites ticket from Ticketek.

This topic has been done to death a few weeks ago when I raised it first. At that time we were talking about Argentina, not Peru (same question though). However, everyone here disagreed with me, and that included people whose opinion I value as they are usually usually spot on. The comments were along the lines of that no opposition worth their salt would risk a potential banana skin by sending pretty much one team to play us here and have say half a fresh team to come in to finish us off in Lima. As a result, I dropped this topic too. I couldn't be arsed to start it again.
One day it is 800k, now it's 2 million. FFS, Don't travel first class and dont take 50+ support & admin people. Where's Air New Zealand when we need them?
Manager, Translater, Coach, Physio, Players, Kitman, Medical assistant. All going business class.
Just checked Webjet and Business class to Lima return = $9,569 X 25 players + 7 staff = $305,984 Hmmmm And if travelling coach class - something I would not expect to be honest, however, just putting it out there.... $2,107 return = $67,424
Yes I may be completely wrong but if we cut out the freeloaders and keep it to the essential and important persons only.
