McGlinchey is better central, unless that formation is actually meant to show that he is wider then it appears. I agree though it is not ideal but we have quality in some areas and no quality at all in others. Plus it is common place in national sides for players to play out of position. An example that springs to mind is Lampard playing deeper for England but as an attacking midfielder for Chelsea.
With Siggy, weeMac and Smeltzy all out of position it's not ideal.
Little Mac did pretty well wide when he got that cross into Killen..I think he can play centrally or out wide. He's a class player either way and hopefully his form holds up over the last month. Playing for CCM must get a little depressing.

This outcome could drive a wedge through Asia as a Confederation. There is no love lost between the East and the West, and West Asia hates Australia being in Asia. They may pursue a separate Confederation (West Asia) to guarantee a World Cup place in the future, leaving East Asia which could absorb Oceania. This was discussed in 2006, but it was considered too much change at that time. Its time may now come.
There would be benefits for NZ from such a change, but if West Asia got 2 World Cup places and East Asia got 3 (or a play-off for the 5th place) we would have a tough route to the World Cup!
Maybe off the thread, but - if Bahrain lose in Wellington - when was the last time that the Middle East did not have a team at the World Cup Finals? I will give you a clue - there were only 16 teams, with one each from Asia and Africa! Bahrain are not just playing for themselves, they are playing for their pride for their region.
Yup, it wasn't on the Ticketek site a few weeks ago but there is a Bahrain Supporters section now. They are Aisle 33. I think I'm in 24 or 25. I hope it's not 32 anyway!! Unlike the Phoenix games it's not behind the goal.
I wonder how Bahrain supporters will be in Wellington. Is there a defined away section at the ROF
If they let any Bahraini in with a loud speaker to do those terrible moaning chants I'm going to commit suicide.Michael2009-10-11 16:39:08
I'll have a milk sheik at the BB with any of them. The royals may have to come incognito though.

I agree do what Suncorp stadium does be mean to the away fans and make them be quiet. The thing is if they have loud speakers we will out do them

I agree, we cannot let Bahrain score the away goals we couldn't manage, so a more defensive lineup should be used.
I say we play with 2 at the front. Bertos has to be used in an attacking position and not have to worry about going back to defend all the time
To be honest I'd actually pick Mulligan - he is a good midfielder, with a good touch, pass and works hard.
Really? I agree with above post, no Mulligan. He isn't a very good passer, in fact he makes up for his lack of creativity and passing ability with his work rate. ANd he is not playing competitive football. Have to completely disagree
He was probably the best player on the park when he played there against the mainland XI during Nix Preseason, but that was pretty much a training match. He's also done well there in the past for the AWs, but not for a while and he's been complete rubbish recently.
Bring back Oughton.
Yeah maybe. I just wonder if he could do the job, but perhaps it's not the best game to try and find out.

I see two current issues with the team when it comes to team selection. We don't have a Right Back or a Left Midfielder. And we have 12 genuine (outfield) contenders to start. The two that miss out are going to be hard done by, no matter what you do.
Only if scores end 0-0, I think we'd be better off winning outright.

He plays central for CCM and when he played wide vs Jordan looked ineffective. Also everything he did that was good except a few were done in central areas. Such as that pass to Wood.

Yeah, he's definately better centrally but still think he can play wide if needed and do a good job

Yeah it will be interesting to see what happens in terms of qualification for 2014. I reckon when we win oceania maybe we should go into an asian group and play home and away matches. probably won't happen, but would be great for development.
We lobbied to join the Asian group stage in 2006/07, but the barrier was that Asia was not prepared to give up a group spot to a country from another Confederation. Most of the members of Asia - especially West Asia - hated Australia coming into Asia as they felt they would have one less place to play for - a concern that has proved to be well-founded. That effectively left "Asia" with only 9 spots - our inclusion would have left them with 8, which was unacceptable to them. I suggested going to 2 groups of 6 teams (no more match days needed as current groups of 5 involve a bye each match day) so that "old Asia" could retain 10 places, but they then argued against it on the basis of the travel distances - Middle East nations especially.
So - joining the Group stage is a good idea, but it may still be difficult to achieve.

Hmm I would still prefer to join Asia. It would lead to far more growth in the future. Is it actually likely that the East and the West will divide into different confederations and Oceania joins the East?
East Asia pushed very hard for East and West to separate when Australia was joining AFC. Japan provides more money for the AFC than any other country, and they do not relate well to the West - culturally, religiously, politically as well as the terrorism factor. West Asia wanted to retain the East for money reasons - but they may feel differently now that they are on the verge of having no team at the World Cup for the first time in 36 years! They will feel like the East is taking over the top comnpetitive level of AFC - Japan and South Korea have always been there, but countered by Saudi, Iran, etc. Now Australia and North Korea have taken top spots - and New Zealand may be about to deprive them of the region's final spot. But FIFA, like life and politics, is all about two things - power and money. Don't expect OFC to roll over!
I wonder how Bahrain supporters will be in Wellington. Is there a defined away section at the ROF?
Wonder how it would work in case of a near sell-out, and there aren't enough Bahraini supporters to fill the aisle.
I read somewhere that the Bahraini royals had sorted out with the national airline to get cheap flights over so I think a few will be here
I'll have a milk sheik at the BB with any of them. The royals may have to come incognito though.
Itching for this game. Going to be huge.
If Paston gets another yellow card I'm going to be furious. Last thing we need is him banned for first day of the World Cup. That'd mean Bannatyne would get the number 1 jersey wouldn't it?

I see two current issues with the team when it comes to team selection. We don't have a Right Back or a Left Midfielder. And we have 12 genuine (outfield) contenders to start. The two that miss out are going to be hard done by, no matter what you do.
The issue with not having in form, quality players for two positions means no matter what you do, you're either playing a foriegn/new formation or you've got players playing out of position, or worse, both!
The key then, is to pick the most in form 10 outfielders as of the week of the game, to play a specific pattern - it is almost a waste of time naming 'dream' teams without accompanying tactics as 10 dudes listed on a piece of paper means nothing.
I personally thought the 3 up front was quite good and was employed together with the plan to send crosses in early, knowing they had three targets. Usually we use the wing and cross from closer to the by-line. Both can work, but really we have only Bertos who is a genuine wide player (as an aside this is quite different to the Nix where we seem to have 5 guys fighting for those roles!).
So if someone has to play out of position, or someone has to be dropped, who do we sacrifice?
I'd favour dropping Vicelich and using 4 at the back to allow Bertos forward. I think he is too good to be wasted defending. (So that means Scott in at RB)
The other thing I think we need is a genuine link for the strikers, so McGlinchey is in my team, as a central attacking mid.
Now come the tough decisions but with an AM playing it sets up for four in the midfield. I believe Elliot is our best central midfielder so he's in there to win ball and distribute.
I'll leave LM for now, but I've only got 2 spots up front, so while I liked the 3 strikers this morning, I'd prefer the 4-4-2 diamond. We'll still have plenty of players to attack (strikers, Bertos, McGlinchey), and it'll be all about the correct tactics to create goals, and execution.
Which two strikers? Pick who ever is in form, and bring the other two on with plenty to go (even at 50 minute mark). This will mean a 90 minute onslaught up front so no rest for the Bahrani defenders.
LM? My thought process says "what do we need from the position, and who have we got that can do the job?" I think this is where you can sacrifice an attacking option, help out Lochy (plus switch sides and help Scott too) and provide an outlet for defense. So, who we got? Brown? Brockie?Vicelich? Mulligan? To be honest I'd actually pick Mulligan - he is a good midfielder, with a good touch, pass and works hard. I know it mightn't be popular, especially with the little game time he's had, and if in training he didn't look like producing the goods I'd use Brown, and just tell him to worry about the simple stuff.
BTW when is Daniel eligible?
no mulligan. no. no mulligan.
good argument.

I do think we shouldn't cloud our thoughts on him as a player from his admitadly abysmyl performances at Right Back.
Has anyone who says he shouldn't play in the midfield actually seen him play there?
Think I'll come down for this...most likely catch the train cause its way cheeeapers than paying 400bucks for plane tickets
Paston
Sigmund Vicelich Nelsen Lochhead
Bertos Brown Elliot
McGlinchy
Wood Killen
The above would be my team, although maybe Smeltz instead of Wood.

Yes,against Team wellington, which is only a semi pro side at best. Still terrible.
he played at left back against them, and he wasn't that bad
George wasnt that bad either
Scott at right back, not too bad an option there. Cannot understand at all why Oughton isn't in the squad.

Very true, although as long as Bertos is willing to put in a sh*tload of work covering both flanks a 4-3-1-2 seems to fit really well.
The key then, is to pick the most in form 10 outfielders as of the week of the game, to play a specific pattern - it is almost a waste of time naming 'dream' teams without accompanying tactics as 10 dudes listed on a piece of paper means nothing.
Very true, probably only about 6 guaranteed starters injuries permitting.

Clever tactics, but probably shouldn't be repeated for the second leg. Bertos is probably best used as the only wide midfield/attacking player, rather than sticking someone not used to it out there.
So if someone has to play out of position, or someone has to be dropped, who do we sacrifice?
Vicelich, to save Siggy being played at RB, and a striker, to allow weeMac to play centrally.
I'd favour dropping Vicelich and using 4 at the back to allow Bertos forward. I think he is too good to be wasted defending. (So that means Scott in at RB)
Precisely

Tighten up the midfield and that'll mean no need for a second wide player (Bertos being the first)
Which two strikers? Pick who ever is in form, and bring the other two on with plenty to go (even at 50 minute mark). This will mean a 90 minute onslaught up front so no rest for the Bahrani defenders.
Tactics regarding who starts up front and how substitutions work will be made on form, injuries and how the game is running, Ricki did well with his changes today.

3 man central midfield (Brown, Elliot and McGlinchey) + Bertos switching flanks = Problem solved.
BTW when is Daniel eligible?
2012
I think it would be hard to argue against McGlinchey starting in the home leg.
Any idea on availability for White Noise tickets ? Have been mega lazy getting sorted ...
Down to 300 or so the other day. I'd get in quick.
Ok cheers, yup will get them very soon.
Wonder how many have been sold today and in total?
Ticketek open on a Sunday? Here is hopeing for a big surge on monday morning
